Speaking to a predominantly Hispanic audience considered crucial to winning Florida, Republican John McCain vowed Monday to make immigration one of his ''first priorities'' if elected president and accused Democrat Barack Obama of spiking reforms in Congress.
McCain spearheaded a bill in 2006 -- reviled by the right wing of his own party -- that would have allowed illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. Obama supported the overall goal but backed controversial amendments that would have limited a guest worker program.
''The fact is that Sen. Obama proposed amendments that would have killed the legislation. I fought for it,'' McCain told more than 350 people at a town hall meeting.
McCain leveled the same charge in ads running in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, which Obama called ''dishonest'' in an interview Sunday on Spanish-language television.
Once pummeled for backing what critics tarred as ''amnesty,'' McCain has talked little about immigration during the general election campaign. He did not raise the issue Monday in Jacksonville, reliably Republican turf where he began a two-day tour that wraps up Tuesday in Tampa.
But Orlando offered a different audience. Central Florida is home to a fast-growing Hispanic community coveted for its political independence, unlike the staunchly Republican Cuban-American voters who have dominated Miami-Dade politics.

We need to face the fact that the GOP has no future without a coalition that includes hispanics. No one is saying amnesty. In fact he is attacking Obama for killing the bill with amnesty “poison pills.”

Secure the border? He is offering a path to citizenship in the first 100 days. That means the border won’t be secure first.

I’m about at the point of ignoring the rest of this election. Pandering to illegal aliens is more important to these candidates than serving its citizens or protecting our borders.

McCain has said repeatedly that he is not going back to the 2007 amnesty bill. It’s dead. That’s why he changed his tune to secure the borders. Of course there will have to be an immigration solution but it starts with securing the borders and deporting criminal aliens. McCain has stressed this.

You might show some concern for the thousands of our ‘babies’ who have been murdered by your beloved illegal aliens. We should demand a Cabinet position..Duncan Hunter/Tancredo to come up and charge,fine,jail the baiters of Hispanic Slavery....Yes I used Slavery...because there is no other language the American people will understand, if they do not live here, that will catch their attention.
You want policy changed, you have to get America behind you first. Go for the electorate....if they are behind stopping the Slavery of Hispanic workers...and show how they are picked up housed (by the 20) and paid under the table..... they will see our cause.

Next time I go to a restaurant and find the dining room too crowded I’ll just go into the kitchen and take my food. I’ll use the excuse that there weren’t enough tables.
If you want to reallocate some of our ‘quota’ to people from Latin America that’s fine by me, but only if it these slots were only open to people who have not previously violated our immigration laws, identity theft laws, or tax laws.
There are a lot of illegals from the lands of my ancestry in eastern europe and I don’t want amnesty for them either.
