Once again...there are FReepers, family members, and their property in harm's way. Use good judgement in posting comments.
Thar she BLOWS !!!!!
Headin’ our way, sorta. (Dallas/Ft. Worth). It will
pass to our east out in East Texas. Right over my
Uncle’s place in Tyler, and my Dad’s place in Quitman.
Expecting gusts here in the Dallas area to 60 mph,
so they say per our local weather talkin’ heads.
Are you doin’ okie-dokie there, PL ?????
(My aunt called me last night LATE and just a short
while ago. My Dad’s surgery in Quitman went just fine.
I will give him a call myself shortly to see how he is
doing).
Gotta head out to work right now.
Y’all take care and see ya later! :^D
Prior to Katrina, we lived SE of New Orleans, in one of Katrina's hardest-hit areas. We lost our house and everything that didn't fit into our 2 cars when we evacuated. We understand fully the effects of a major storm. I truly hope the impact of Ike is not as great as I fear it will be. I have many friends in the Freeport/Galveston area. Those I spoke to yesterday had already left, and were safe. The casual attitude I've seen on the news from those who wouldn't leave is appalling.
Some "journalist" with the New Orleans' Times-Picayune newspaper wrote a column after Gustav describing the horrors of evacuation, blaming Jindal, FEMA, and everyone, and advocating staying home (in NOLA!) if a storm approaches. His ignorant tripe, and my reply, can be seen here.
After Gustav, I put together GustavHelp.com, a site designed to focus on the medium- to long-term issues following a storm. I wanted to provide a short, simple list of helpful tips, agencies, contact info, etc. I based it largely on our own experiences following Katrina, and with the resources that helped us directly.
We're about 15 miles east of Baton Rouge, and lost power for 3 days, and Internet/phone for 5 days, following Gustav.
Even here, Ike's winds were strong enough yesterday morning to knock over our fully-loaded garbage can!
Last night, I mirrored the GustavHelp site to AfterAStorm.com to make it less Gustav-specific.
It's a work in progress, so if you know of any really excellent links, sites, resources, etc. please tell me about them and I'll add them. (Especially new ones pertaining to Ike.)
I can certainly sympathize with those folks down there. My area of Chicago is rapidly going under water. I-94 on the north side is closed, the main road to O’Hare is about to be closed completely (1 lane barely open), my street and yard are both flooded. More rain today and Ike pays us a visit tomorrow with another 3”+ due in. We already are at 7” of rain since about midnight.
But the wind is darn near calm!
Prayers for all the REAL deal storm strugglers on the Gulf Coast!
I got one of Balde's neighbors on the phone (after about ten "all circuits are busy" messages) and he got the tree moved that had fallen across his driveway and went to check on Balde.
Balde is fine! His place has some damage and a power line came down on his car parked there, but he is OK and sleeping now because he was up all night monitoring the water coming into his home. I am going to give him SUCH a hug when I get home around Thanksgiving.
Thank you again for your support. This is one of the things that makes FR so great!
How’s it up your way FGS?
Thinking of you!!
Anyone know anything about Sugarland, I have cousins their.
index bump
Oh well, at least we are alive!
Prayers up for all in Ike’s path.
I haven't heard from them since Monday. I'm guessing they went to stay with their kids in Houston, although they all may have moved more inland to get out of the way of the storm.
Prayers up to everyone in the path of the storm, and hoping my friends - Pat and Chrissy - got through it safely.

Ike is now touching Wisconsin; we’ll be getting ‘leftover rain’ all day long.
If this weather pattern keeps up, we’ll have that 100” of snow and MORE again this year.
We’ve had floods, then drought, then back to flooding again. It’s insane.
Thank you.
Southwest Houston / Sugar Land
Power failed at 12:44 Friday morning, don’t know if it will stay on this time. Massive tree damage everywhere. Roads impassable in many cases around Houston. Storm this morning caused additional flooding.
Still no word from Galveston’s West End either from local news of from residents. Total blackout down there.
Propane-made coffee is the best thing in the world.
My friend near Katy emailed and said they had no flooding, and only lost one shingle. But listening to the wind howl all night was not a fun experience. They’re at her sister’s house now though because she has power.
Of course the media is going to pay attention to the whiners. As long as there’s a Republican in the White House or as Governor every storm is an opportunity to show how badly things went. Even if they didn’t. It’s a sickness.
I have a first-hand report from my brother & freeper who left Houston this morning heading North on I-45. He is now 130 miles North of Houston.
He has not had a problem going north, other than a narrowing to one lane in Conroe. The problem that is looming is heavy car traffic headed back to Houston.
1. Heavy car traffic is heading back toward Houston despite water and gas shortages.
2. There are virtually no truck traffic headed toward Houston. He saw about 15 tractor-trailers in 100 of driving.
3. He saw only two power utility trucks heading south.
4. The weather in Houston is miserable. A little rain, heat, and awful humidity with severe Tstorms expected this afternoon. IOW, typical mid-summer Houston w/o AC. 5. Entergy Texas is still reporting 99% of it's customers are without power.
6. He spoke with an Entergy crew in The Woodlands and was told it would be a week before he had power.
7. He had no running water where he lived, which is why he's going to stay with relative north of Dallas.
A massive response is needed and people returning will only make the need greater. Hopefully they are taking gallons and gallons of water with them and have full tanks of gas. It would be impossible to overreact to the need in Houston.
Sam Club on 6 baking bread, WalMart open tomorrow.
I live near Cincinnati and have always followed your hurricane threads. I never thought I’d be reporting a hurricane condition update.
The remnants of Ike are passing 75 miles northwest of us. Not a drop of rain but a tremendous amount of wind. Gusts of 70 plus with some damage. 500,000 without power.
