Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Now! Now! We are all Gods children. :^)

Excellent! You come from good stock, it is a pleasure to meet you. Am a navy kid, born in Hawaii when it was a territory.

So the storm surge was lower.Thank God.
Sigh... that is why I get my news online... I get way too aggravated watching the networks.

Watch now for the criminal element to come in. Trust nothing as this storm moves in. The bastards wait for the height then move.
This is not a textbook storm. Surge, per tcrlaf, is at 12.18 feet at Galveston Pier, so far. The geometry of the strike isn’t shoving as much water up-bay as it could. but I don’t have a supercomp and am not making any calls for the north end of the bay.
Thank you!
OK FRiend.
Ole Shep is DEFINATELY still a child!
Eye just passed over galveston...
About a one hour window for rescues now....
Brick veneer, IIRC. Probably better than solid brick would be, because it can flex a bit better, although it also means you could lose some, like they lost that big slab of veneer on the hotel in Galveston. (Big as in several stories high, but not real wide)
Good night all, I’m outta here!
The closest I’ve been to the moon is on top of a mountain, but I had air and water there!
That doesn’t make sense.
They moved to AK in ‘51 and had a bunch of kids. Anchorage, Cordova and Summitt. No such thing as game season. Dad was Coast Guard, AAF, and FAA. Hawaii I will visit when I can afford it. GO NAVY! :^)
Geraldo now thanking his ‘trusty palm tree’ saying he couldn’t have gotten through the first half without it.
Yes a window, but not for Crystal Beach. Waves in the eye go nuts. A pilot would have to be nuts to get a helo up now. There’s some high ground along 18, NE of Flake, should be above the surge, but not the waves right now. Best bet they have.
smoooooke on the waaater..
Listen. I urge you all that aren’t watching Jerry. I tuned because I just knew he’d be waxing philosophic during the eye wall. He’s pontificating about past storms and the life experience that he, as a sea captain on land on tv, only knows, but will share with you, the viewer.
Sometimes permanently.....LOL
