Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

I have a memory of a pressure of 925
for one of them the last couple of
years. Wilma or Rita?

This is truly one terrifying storm. I
can’t believe Cuba and FL are still
within his rain field. Stunning.

Praying that all at ANY risk have
made the essential preps .. there’s
very little room for error with this
one if they’re in the cone. The right
decisions must be in enough time.

I will continue to pray for God’s
safety and protection for all at risk.

It’s times like this when it is so stressful and frustrating being far away from family, especially the elders.

um, not with Ike.......big wind field.

Still, probably on the west side it will be tropical storm force winds that far out.

"11pm track shifts closer to Houston/Galveston"

Whoa!
That was quite a shift...if the trend is in that direction, look-out Houston!

same. ;)

Hopefully the odd structure will continue, but I doubt it. Once the dual wind maxes consolidate windspeeds come up.

The panic will begin tomorrow in Houston/Clear Lake/Galveston. No way I want to be on the road in a panic.

Rita’s lowest pressure was 897 mb; Wilma was 882 mb. Katrina was 902.

My wife doesn’t seem to be concerned, but this is closer than they’ve been to any hurricane in recent memory. And I just have this gut feeling...I hope I’m wrong...that Ike’s going to be a monster, worse than Rita.

We’ll see. Thanks for the thread, NN.

Continuing to monitor....

Thanks NN for staying on top of these storms. You’re a treasure.
God bless all in the path of IKE. May he disintegrate before he does much damage.

God bless America!!!!!

Agreed - most people will be prepping tomorrow and driving out late in the day... weather will be deteriorating rapidly during the day on Friday.

Model runs are now grouped strongly between Victoria and Galveston. Weather channel expects a hit late Friday night. at current forward speed (which is 1/3rd the speed of Gustav, by the way).

I haven't heard from Chertof and FEMA yet, have you? If this turns out badly, which I think it will, there will be another backlash against Bush. "Took care of things while the RNC was underway, did not care when no one was looking."

Hate to look at this politically, but the dems will. Last I'll mention it because it makes me feel dirty to think the way Dems do.

Even tropical storm winds that border on Cat 1 hurricanes aren’t all that bad. We get winds that high a few times a year in the Pacific NW and it isn’t that bad. Being 100 mile to the SW of land fall is pretty safe, especially if it is tracking farther east.
