Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Hey there! I been fightin’ tonight. (The guy who plays my husband out at Renfest and I have a kick-ass throwdown that gets rehearsed a few times a week.)

So what are the quick and dirty odds that a) my hubby here in Houston will see some action from this storm, and b) I and my Spaniards will see some in Plantersville?

the question is.....will models trend north of Houston? The movement seems to be more north than west.

NW La. could still be in play here if it does not make the turn. It may have though.....sats are really hard to determine motion of course.

Ike moving NW at 7 mph. Winds 100 mph, 944 mb.
This pressure represents a drop of 14 mb in 6 hrs.

I am glad to know people are being asked/told to get OUT of the way of IKE.

We (all of us who watch these Hurricanes thanks to NN FR threads) do NOT LIKE IKE!

Go away Ike - way away.

Praying for and hurting (in advance) for any in the path of IKE.

Yes, and the track shift closer to Galveston and Houston is ominous.

The fact that Jim Cantore is now reporting from Galveston is surely a concern for those on the island. His comments over the past two days, though, are an even greater worry IMHO. He has referred to Ike’s potential size and behavior as Katrina-like.

The winds aren’t up there yet, of course, but that pressure reading is now consistent with a Cat 4 storm.

Not under a manitory evacuation order yet. Traffic out of Houston in a Hurricane is hell. I will probably ride Ike out.

so they can blame bush for people not leaving....

I am lucky; I am a reporter for the Freedom chain of newspapers, libertarian in bent......small l.

Most of my co-workers are conservatives. But, most papers are not that way. I firmly believe though they would not admit it and it may be subconscious for many, they would wait to talk about this much purely for political reasons.

They probably also feel burned by Gustav.

Hey--remember last night I was teasing you about the hamsters running the models that took so long?

About an hour ago during an interview, Jeff Masters described that the data were being loaded into the computers, and the model runs would be ready about 2AM-3AM.

Maybe I was really on to something with the hamsters...

;o)

Seriously? We might get some on the far side of Tomball? Dammit! They can’t cancel rehearsal ... my group NEEDS it! :)

Truth be told, they have canceled rehearsal twice since I got there ... once in 2002, when some storm or other came in and nearly wiped FM 1774 off the map, and then in 2005 when Rita was gonna hit, but frankly I didn’t pay much attention to Rita ‘cause I’d gotten married the weekend before.

Well, this is just lovely.
My mother-and-father-in-law are in San Jacinto County. They’re about an hour north of Houston, and from what I see of the track, when he comes ashore, they’re in the bullseye to the NE of Ike’s path

Oh, crap.

I’m just a bit worried because my father-in-law isn’t 100% health-wise. Thankfully, they have my mom’s realtives nearby with sturdy housing. They got some damage from Rita, and this one’s coming even closer, if he holds his current track.
