I had dinner last night with a Republican-leaning independent who was despondent over John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She had been looking forward to supporting McCain as a fiscal conservative with a deep understanding of foreign relations. But all she could now see was that picture of Palin's pregnant 17-year-old looking defiant and stupid as she held mom's fifth baby.
Many religious conservatives are jubilant. They regard Palin as a swell choice because her high-schooler was going to have the baby. The line sent my friend into shock. This is not a matter of abortion politics, she said, but of managing one's own affairs.
"Don't they have birth control up in Alaska?" she asked....

This wouldn’t be a hit piece if the daughter had had an abortion - it would be a love fest for Palin.

There is nobody else that McCain could have picked that would have energized the base as much as Palin has. Now will that energy be enough to carry the ticket to a win in November remains to be seen, but at least for now, it has paid off, bigtime.

I just cannot, never will, understand women, who not only go against their own instinct and kill their own babies, but would throw away their own country rather than vote for anyone who does not espouse the “right” to do it. That person could go so far as to promote the policy that it should not be illegal, but that that doesn't make it a “right” and these angry bitter women will hate them for saying so. Inhumane behavior and actions tend to make people bitter and mean, as these women clearly demonstrate.
And they call Conservatives single issue voters!

What is a Republican leaning independent? Would they rather have Obama who wants to tax, tax, tax. Both of our nominees are for cutting taxes and getting rid of wasteful government. What is not fiscal about that?
Some of the news media need to follow what Mark Twain said: “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”

If Mattel has any brains (especially if G-d-Willing, McCain-Palin prevail)...
they’ll make a few million more copies of that Barbie version.
With a correct hairdo and those Sarah Palin glasses.
And her convention speech outfit.
Guaranteed to sell millions for Chrismas 2008!!!
We’re talking the Cabbage Patch Dolls eatin’ Sarah Palin Barbie’s

My wife and I were laughing about that when listening to a talk radio show. When a caller starts w/ something like “I’m a life-long Republican ... “ you know they’re a liberal calling. Never fails.

We realize that most 17-year-olds are to at least some degree stupid; I know I was at that age. Good think we don’t elect 17-year-olds to be VP.

Froma Harrop that was a nice hit piece.
Sorry, your so-called Republican Leaning Independent sounds more like a far-left Obama supporter.
Better check the credentials of your friends before making these statements.

I always get a kick out of these people who call themselves fiscal & foreign affairs conservatives but are “liberal” on social issues. They insist that social issues aren’t important, and they don’t understand why pro-life, pro-family people make such a big deal out of them. But then they threaten to vote for a socialist candidate who hates the military because of those same issues. But if those issues aren’t important, why can’t they just overlook the fact that Palin is a social conservative?

I'm sure that's exactly how steve-b and the liberal-tarian wing of the GOP was feeling. Someone like Sarah Palin, with all those wretched children, is an affront to them.
I suppose you'll be pulling the lever for Bob Barr in November, Stevey?

You see this on DU all the time. Anecdotal evidence passed off as scientific strategic information. "My mother's boss's wife, who voted for Bush in (insert year here) just (called, emailed, wrote, Pony Expressed) how much they hate (insert Republican here) because of (insert unsubstantiated rumor here). They even said they would be voting for (insert Dem candidate here) and it will be the first time they ever voted Democrat!!!11!1!"

Yeah, Froma’s articles turn up here from time to time. She’s a world-class dingbat.
There are no pregnant single girls in New York, of course. That comprehensive sex education in the schools and all the free contraceptives keep that from ever happening. STOOOOO-PID.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has five children, but she waited until they were grown before she ran for high political office. I call BS based on the following from Pelosi's approved biography:
No matter how busy she was at home, Pelosi always volunteered for the Democratic party during election campaigns. In 1976 she worked for the presidential campaign of California's popular governor, Jerry Brown (1938).
She would've had several young children at home, including the youngest who would've been 7 while Nan was out working the precincts.
This person in the article was a left-wing extremist.
