That Sarah Palin rumor
Knoxville News Sentinel, TN ^ | 8.31.08 | Katie Allison Granju

Bloggers

here

and here ] are all over the theory that Sarah Palin's four-month-old baby may actually be her grandchild - the son of her 16-year-old daughter, who missed most of the last school year with what the family said was mononucleosis.

[ snip ]

My first thought is that this sort of scrutiny has to be really hard on the 16-year-old girl in question. And my second thought was that IF this turns out to be true, I'll find it a really scary example - perhaps the most scary example of anything I've seen in a long time - of a politician who would do anything to get elected.

[ snip ]

And if this IS true, Sarah Palin has opened her daughter up to a rough ride by exposing her family to the national press. The mainstream media only recently found itself badly burned when tabloids and bloggers completely scooped them on a salacious rumor (John Edwards' affair) that turned out to be 100% true. You can bet the press won't let this happen again, and I guarantee you that there are reporters in Alaska right this minute, poring over school, birth, and travel records, as well as looking at every photo of this family that they can get their hands on.

This is a terrible lie. I cannot imagine Palin pretending pregnancy, stuffing bigger and bigger pillows under her clothes. Too many people would be involved for this kind of a coverup (such as doctors, nurses, friends) to work.

This is too bizarre. I can think of only one case where a woman pretended her daughter's baby was hers and that was Ted Bundy's grandmother.

Must be horrible for Palin's daughter.

Forget the emotional aspects of this. This is the political season and everything and anything will be used. McCain made a political decision as do all politicians. I hope to hell he did everything he needed to do.

Let me explain what I would do if I were to run for office. I would hire three of the best private investigators to investigate ME to see if everything was out there that I might have overlooked. If McCain didn’t do this with Palin he made a royal screwup. This happened with Eagleton and it instantly doomed his campaign. McGovern had to go from supporting Eagleton 1000% to replacing him with Sargent Shriver (Maria’s father)on the ticket a day or two later. He never recovered.

My stomach is tied up in knots over this thing. Gotta get some Alka Seltzer.

Please.

In this era of "media overwatch", this would require the family itself, close friends, the doctors, nurses, father of the child, etc, etc to not say ANYTHING about such a scheme. And think of the cash that someone could get from the National Enquirer selling such a story - that would have been done by now.

Is it possible? No, not even possible. The cover-up involved would be extensive.

Look at Sarah's face and jaw line when they first open the door in that video. She is puffy in the face, and when she walks she has a slight waddle and a definite bump when they show her in the office.

This reminds me of the Bigfoot news conference this month, or the Montauk (sp) Monster that was in fact a raccoon. People are going to see what they want.

Actually, the National Enquirer and The Star are the most reliable of news out there after the Wall Street Journal. They are never sued for any stories because they employ a battery of lawyers to go over every story before it is published. I still have The Star’s copy from 1992 which exposed Gennifer Flower’s story. If you see this story in the National Enquirer, we are sunk.

Anytime a politician has to respond to stories takes that much time out of the limited time to get his story out. This could be lethal to the campaign. I’m serious about this stuff and I have followed campaigns for 55 years at least. I still remember President Truman when he was president.

There is a possible benefit to this and it may be a big beartrap that McCain has set. Let the left wing blogosphere take up their time chasing a false story and then knock it down. They would have wasted their time instead of more substantive issues.

And yes, it does reflect the abject fear that they feel about the Palin candidacy. They are scared out of their minds especially if she debates well and knows the subject material. McCain threw a “Hail Mary” pass and we don’t know if it has been caught in the end zone yet.

We ignore this at our peril.

My 10 year old (looks like a teenager) has a belly like that. I also always had a little belly pouch and hated it.

I get what you are saying, Richard. Doesn't it seem odd to you that a little over 48 hours into the Palin VP candidacy there is this neatly wrapped little story buzzing around? Did someone just sit at their keyboard and say, "Hmmm, I wonder if that is really Sarah Palin's baby? Let investigate..." Either this is a rumor that has been around a bit, or Obama's Op Research group has been beating the bushes (bad choice of words) for a while here looking for dirt.

On the video link you posted is at a site with a blog. Normally about hiking in Alaska - but now filled with trash about this subject. Maybe it is a standard part of any Dem smear to go as low as possible, as fast as possible, but they are suggesting some sort of sick twist to this story that I won't even get in to.

I hope McCain can can get this stamped down good and fast.

Then it struck me as odd. Why is the Governor of Alaska in the airport and preparing to get onto my commercial flight?

Maybe, because she paid for a ticket and the plane is going where she wants to go??? /sarc off

I know where this lady is coming from, though. It is a shocker to actually witness a politician be a down-to-earth, normal everyday person who lives like the rest of us. Most of them have millions and contemptuously look down their lofty noses at us taxpaying slaves. They wouldn't be caught dead on a regular airplane. Oh, the horror of sitting next to the dirty unwashed public!

GO SARAH

Here’s a link to a couple of pictures and a post about seeing Palin pregnant in the airport. I’m sure that more pictures will surface very soon.

I really don’t know. Ordinarily I wouldn’t pay it any mind. I expected she would be picked apart for her short time in politics, etc. and that she was put there to get Hillary voters. I was for her a month or more ago because I thought she offered a fresh face on the ticket that would be very appealing. When one looked at all the rest they tended toward the boring or unacceptable. I doubted she would get picked and constantly checked Intrade to see if there were any leading indicators. The first time I began to think it was her was when someone here posted the flight plan and it all made sense. This was probably nine hours before the national media learned of it.

I never expected this and when I first saw the headlines I really didn’t read it as I thought it was garbage. But then when I actually looked at what was being said I started googling up what I could find and then began to become concerned. I am a worrier by nature. I take nothing for granted. I sort of hold my breath until something becomes reality. I hope this goes away so the McCain campaign can strongly contest the election.

What I do know is that in national elections, the hatchet men and women will do anything and everything to win. There is nothing off limits. McCain needs to be able to go after Obama hammer and tong until he hits paydirt and if Obama starts to stammer and yammer especially in the debates then Obama’s balloon will start to deflate. And let us hope that Palin knows the subjects well so she can go after Biden as well. Her job will be to portray herself as ready to assume the presidency. That’s a tall order even for the most skilled candidate.

Gosh, your perspective is certainly...unique! At least I hope it is. Palin’s no Dick Cheney, but neither is she Tom Eagleton. Both parties learned from that debacle.
Palin would not-—one needn’t know a great deal about her to be sure of this much-—she would NOT imperil McCain’s chances by signing on to the ticket while living a lie, an easily exposed lie, and such a gothic sort of lie at that.
I’m starting to wonder if there’s something in the drinking water this year.

There is something in the drinking water this year and it’s called desperation. I am with you 100%. They have no proof of this and are just feeding it in hopes it gets some legs and they want to freak out the McCain/Palin base.

What they don’t know is that this will back fire on them. I as a woman am completely repulsed reading these rumors and find them incredibly sexist. They can’t go after her on anything expect her pregnancy! I am telling you this will not go over well with the middle of the road Hillary supporters. It will also not go over well with independent women. Add to that they are attacking a young girl and it makes it all the more despicable.

The woman was very positive about Sarah. They planned to stay in touch; Sarah told her to email her her before she returned and she would make time to meet with her about the activities she works on in Alaska.

Either this is a rumor that has been around a bit, or Obama's Op Research group has been beating the bushes (bad choice of words) for a while here looking for dirt.

I was at a panel discussion once with a senior Dem politico (Shrum, I think). Whoever it was said that from the moment that a person declared for any substantial office (mayor of a fairly large town, state legislature or above) the Dems goal was to have video cameras on them to record their every public statement, and to start compiling dossiers on them.

So, much in the same way that the media keeps current obituaries on hand for celebrities and major public features, the Dems have regularly-updated files containing both substance and rumor/innuendo to pull from. And it's clear that they are taking what they have and leaking it all over the place to flood the public domain with negative information on Palin. While the whole Palin pregnancy story is the one getting folks really riled up, the real example of how this is working is how only hours after Palin's selection was know the Washington Post ran a VERY detailed story on the situation with her child-tasering cop brother-in-law.

One would hope that. But this year we have had the Spitzer scandal; the Edwards scandal, and if I think of it probably there are more out there as well.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. We all have skeletons clanking around in our closets that we have put out of mind. I’ve got a few of my own I’m not proud of and it is all too easy to rationalize why a person does what they do and all the good that one does afterwards does not erase what they did in the past.

What I find so discouraging is that if McCain seriously considered her he wouldn’t have put the best people on this to do a thorough vetting so that nothing went unnoticed. I was investigated by the FBI for a TS clearance years ago and knew I had to tell the truth. The problem with this is that only direct questions are asked. What is not done is to ask some kind of all encompassing question such as list all of the things you have ever done wrong that you know of so we can check them thoroughly. That’s not done and I seriously doubt she was subjected to a polygraph. She may simply have believed it was finessed and if she did she made a terrible mistake that could cost McCain the election.

Somebody already posted a photo of her here, preggers.

No legs on this one.

Their two backup accusations are that (a) Palin caused the baby to be Downs Syndrome by neglecting prenatal care (source: Alan Colmes) and (b) since Palin is pro-life she couldn't go to an abortion clinic like a "normal" woman, so she tried to kill her baby by taking risky airplane flights late in the pregnancy.
