One would hope that. But this year we have had the Spitzer scandal; the Edwards scandal, and if I think of it probably there are more out there as well.
Let’s be honest with ourselves. We all have skeletons clanking around in our closets that we have put out of mind. I’ve got a few of my own I’m not proud of and it is all too easy to rationalize why a person does what they do and all the good that one does afterwards does not erase what they did in the past.
What I find so discouraging is that if McCain seriously considered her he wouldn’t have put the best people on this to do a thorough vetting so that nothing went unnoticed. I was investigated by the FBI for a TS clearance years ago and knew I had to tell the truth. The problem with this is that only direct questions are asked. What is not done is to ask some kind of all encompassing question such as list all of the things you have ever done wrong that you know of so we can check them thoroughly. That’s not done and I seriously doubt she was subjected to a polygraph. She may simply have believed it was finessed and if she did she made a terrible mistake that could cost McCain the election.
