NEW ORLEANS -- Spooked by predictions that Hurricane Gustav could grow into a Category 5 monster, an estimated 1 million people fled the Gulf Coast Saturday _ even before the official order came for New Orleans residents to get out of the way of a storm taking dead aim at Louisiana.
Mayor Ray Nagin gave the mandatory order late Saturday, but all day residents took to buses, trains, planes and cars _ clogging roadways leading away from New Orleans, still reeling three years after Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 percent of the city and killed about 1,600 across the region.
The evacuation of New Orleans becomes mandatory at 8 a.m. Sunday along the vulnerable west bank of the Mississippi River, and at noon on the east bank. Nagin called Gustav the storm of the century and told residents to "get your butts out of New Orleans now."

Yup. Hit just prior to it. Canceled it. Boy, what a coincidence. (But if Pat Robertson were to mention this "coincidence," boy, would others make sure the "wrath of God" would descend upon him for pointing it out)
The stereotyping is idiotic.

True Dat!,,,
It seems like every thread has a load of that Krap on it,,,
Most from the West or the North from lookin’ at their pages.
I think it’s a message - “DON’T LIVE THERE.”
Are the landlords (ie., federal government taxpayers) going to be picking up New Orleans’ welfare-state Democrats in limousines and giving them a ride to plush hotels this time, the way they failed to do last time? And, of course, handing out $2,000 “debit” cards like candy....
Good post, good link.
I’m glad Nagin learned from his errors with Katrina. I hope no one is killed or seriously injured there. Prayers for those in Gustav’s path!
I asked on another thread, without a plausible answer, “Who has the authority to order me out of my home and for reason”? Shouldn’t it take a court order?
I hear voices: "Sorry to rain on your parade"....again.
Let them parade....on another planet.
Do as you wish...at your own peril.
I used to have close family in Slidell who have since moved.
Prayers for your dear parents.
***It’s weird but it seems like ever since it hit Jamaica it just turned and it’s headed almost directly at NOLA.***
Bush’s and Rove’s weather machine.
I can well take care of myself and my family and am no more willing to give up my home or guns than Chuck Heston. My question related to the legal aspect of some local bureaucrat ordering people to leave their homes.
Are you a free citizen or just a government subject?
As a resident of southeast LA, I concur, gracesdad! Too many people who didn’t “wait around” have been falsely maligned because the media didn’t portray any who left — just those who didn’t.
Thanks jllh. My parents are safe, but this is obviously taking a toll on their mental and physical health, and their home in Thibodaux might take Cat 4 to 5 hit. They had just finished fixing it up to move back near their kids. Who knows now?
So sorry to hear of your family’s home. I can certainly identify on the toll it takes to be without basic power. We had water but had no electricity (and no generator!) for 10 days. We were about to lose what was left of our sanity when some of my colleagues, who had gotten their power back, lent us their camper trailer and a generator. As it turned out, we only used it for one night since our power came back on 9/11. I don’t think we would have lasted one more night - truly!!
Damage to the parents’ home was minimal, thank goodness, but they still haven’t gotten back home. They found out power was back, but then stopped at Jackson, Miss., because of Ike.
