The announcement from Dayton will start any minute. Theres a new rock star in town. Conservatives are full of Hope that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will bring much-needed Change to McCain Republicanism.
Catch the fever.
Im starting a new thread and kicking off discussion with this YouTube ad from Palin supporters.
Yes, Im impressed. Very impressed.
Flashback: You go, girl: Alaska GOP Gov. will sue Bush administration over polar bear listing

The official statement from McCain:
U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.
Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.
Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.
In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the bridge to nowhere that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.
As the head of Alaskas National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.
Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

The ACU raves:
CONSERVATIVES HAIL MCCAIN VICE PRESIDENTIAL PICK
(Minneapolis, MN) - David Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union, has issued the following statement on Republican Presidential Candidate John McCains pick of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
The selection of Governor Palin is great news for conservatives, for the party and for the country. Her dedication to principle, her courage both before and after her election as Governor of Alaska and her personal qualities make her a perfect choice for Vice President. I predict any conservatives who have been lukewarm thus far in their support of the McCain candidacy will work their hearts out between now and November for the McCain - Palin ticket.

Jennifer Rubin at PJM:
Palin will argue that in fact Obama has no more experience than she does, and that Palin has the advantage of sharing McCains views (and thus being right) on the surge, Russian ambitions, and meetings with state terror sponsors. The VP debate against Biden may be dicey, but the McCain camp knows full well that a vice-presidential debate isnt going to make or break their candidate. In short, McCain is hoping that Palin is good enough on this score for a number two pick against a Democratic ticket headed by a man with virtually the same meager national security credentials.
As to the second, Palin has much to offer McCain. On a non-political level few can doubt her Q-factor. (She will be the first former beauty queen to run on a national ticket.) The daughter of a teacher and mother of five, she has an ebullient personality and an excellent TV presence. The Right will be entranced : a pro-life hunter with a passion for domestic energy development? And in the battle for change she has the record of reform and the identity of a complete Washington outsider. Finally, as a lifelong NRA member, an outdoorswoman, and a western governor she may provide extra help in mountain and western states such as Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico which are certain to be in play.
On the policy front, Palin can make the case that the Democratic program of higher taxes, more spending, and a government takeover of health care is a proven loser. She will argue that she can bring practical experience from as far outside the Beltway as one can get. And, of course, the presence of a woman on the ticket creates instantaneous excitement and puts into play Clinton voters looking for a new champion.
The pick also tells us something about McCain: he thinks he can win. He was not willing to rock the boat with his conservative base. He can use Palin on offense to make a run at women voters and on defense to blunt the populist attacks from the Democrats. And it shows he understands the need to generate enthusiasm and newness in his own campaign.
Ed Morrissey: Change conservatives can believe in!
LifeNews has an excellent overview of Palins staunch, pro-life activism.

12:22pm Eastern. McCain: It is with great pride and gratitude that I tell you that I have the right partner for those who value their responsibilities over their privileges, someone who has fought corruption, stopped government from wasting taxpayers money someone with executive experience, who has shown great tenacity and skill in tackling tough problems, especially our dependence on foreign oil, someone with strong principles, a fighting spirit, and deep compassion, someone who grew up in a decent, hard-working middle-class family
Good stuff: She knows when to stand up and doesnt let anyone tell her to sit down Shes exactly who I need, shes exactly who this country needs
Really good.
The next vice president of the United States, Gov. Sarah Palin of the great state of Alaska.
Huge roar of applause. Huge.
Obama-Biden has to be in full snit-fit mode.
And Hillary must be experiencing a schadenfreude-licious moment right now.
Its McCains birthday and the Palins 20th anniversary today.
12:44pm Eastern. Palin gives props to Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton. The women of America arent finished yet We can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all!
Palin coopts the Hope and Change mantra. Sweet.
Audience coopts Yes, we can! Sweet.
God bless America!
For real.
THEY'RE SAYING THAT MCCAIN HAS PICKED SARAH PALIN. The Insta-Wife is ecstatic, which may bode well for that demographic. I'd like it if she had more executive experience, but to be fair, she's got more than anyone else on either ticket. Is she too liberal on gay rights? Not for me, but maybe for some people.
UPDATE: Sissy Willis has more, including video of an interview of Palin by Larry Kudlow.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Judging from SayUncle, Palin will play well among the crucial bitter gun-clinger demographic. [They prefer to be called 'blasty-Americans' now -- ed. Oh, good grief.]
Plus, the WaPo's Ben Pershing on Sarah Palin's Porkbusting.
The pick is getting good marks from Geraldine Ferraro.
And, Palin as the anti-Ted Stevens."In an election where the Republicans biggest liability isnt Iraq but Ted Stevens and the Alaskan Bridge To Nowhere, McCain took his maverick mantle by the reins and just signed up the Anti Stevens to help him root out the corruption endemic in DC."
This rather churlish response from the Obama campaign won't help them -- dissing small towns doesn't fit well after Biden's "nobody is better than anybody" talk. [LATER: McCain response: "I'd think the Obama people would have learned by now not to belittle the experience of women."]
By contrast, I just saw Palin praise Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro as pathbreakers. And that "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling" line was delightfully sly.
MORE: Reader Kyle Griffin emails: "Did the Obama campaign just accuse the Republican campaign of having a VP with insufficient experience? Was that really smart? Will we see an ad about that tomorrow from the McCain youTube team?" Yeah, it did seem like an unforced error.
An "I told you so" from Katie Granju. [LATER: Granju emails: "I'm telling you. She's got the goods. Of course, I disagree with her on, well, mostly everything, but she's super impressive." Yeah, I'd never seen her speak before, and I was wrong to discount her, though I thought she'd said she didn't want the job.]
More on Geraldine Ferraro on Palin.
Roger Simon: Obama the stodgy, McCain the Maverick.
Brilliant choice. It will be hard to criticize her on experience as she probably does more before breakfast than Obama does all day.
That's an easy one to dismiss. Sarah Palin has had more executive experience, meaning experience in running either a business or a government, than either Barack Obama or his running mate, Joe Biden. She has more executive experience than even her running mate, John McCain. Governor Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska from 1999 to 2002. She was elected as President of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. She was elected as Governor of Alaska in 2006. And she has quite a few concrete achievements, considering the amount of time she's been in office.
The McCain campaign is hoping and praying that someone will say that Palin is unready for the job. Please, John McCain is praying right now AS I TYPE, Let a Democrat say that an executive with 2 years of experience and no foreign policy expertise isnt ready for the presidency. Oh pretty please. Because you know what Im going to do? Im going to take that soundbite, put it in an ad, slap Obamas mug up there, and run it over and over and over again.
Heres what Palin said about the arrangements she has ALREADY made for Baby Trigg as Governor of Alaska...
Anchorage Daily News
http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/382560.html
The governor said she wont take a maternity leave but will bring Trig with her to work. Her spokesperson later clarified, at Palins request, that the governor will take time off for medical appointments, physical therapy and whatever Trig needs.
Sarahs bringing a Baby to the White House!
"The last two callers to Michael Medved show, both claiming to be lifelong Republicans, were appalled that McCain would pick a mother with a disabled baby. They said she should be home caring for her child and not running for VP. Clearly the seminar callers have received their marching orders and the Dems are well along on one of the most despicable attacks on a candidate in history."
Profile of Alaska's Sarah Palin: Governor, Reformer, Mother
Palin pick already yielding rhetorical dividends?
See, this is why journos in the bag for Obama should await the royal talking points before opening their dullard yaps. CNNs John Roberts: Palin Too Young and Inexperienced:
During the 9 a.m. EDT hour of CNN Newsroom, American Morning co-anchor John Roberts gave an analysis of Governor Sarah Palin during discussion of Senator John McCains vice presidential choice. Roberts focused on Palins lack of experience, saying that a prerequisite for the vice presidency should be the ability to step right into the office, especially because of McCains age. Roberts stated [...] shes the youngest governor ever in Alaskas history, and shes the first woman. Shes only been in office for a couple of years now, which really raises the experience issue here.
Leave aside for the moment the dissonance of pretending to worry about Palins inexperience should she be forced (by the death of a fossilized McCain) into the Presidency when you havent offered the same argument for a man with even less executive experience getting the job outright; that probably has to do with her being the first woman governor or something equally patriarchal.
But in making this argument that a 72-year old candidate is almost certain to kick while in office what you have further done is begun alienating aging boomers who will soon be McCains age, questioning their worth and viability, throwing into doubt their general competence.
Which means Roberts has managed to 1) highlight the inexperience of the Dem candidate for president by going after the inexperience of the Republican candidate for vice president; 2) has managed to make an implied argument that the inexperience of a woman is somehow more dangerous than the inexperience of a man, or a man of (half) color; and 3) has managed to make an ageist argument that could, at some level, get aging Dem Boomers to believe that their party thinks of them as prop voters, necessary for victory, but after that, to be set afloat on an ice chunk and allowed to drift off serenely into the great political beyond.
Add to that the calculus that many Hillary supporters will be thinking, that should have been Hillary! and what we have here is a perfect storm of identity politics for the Dems to try to steer their shiny yacht through safely.
Of course, the wildcard here is that female Democrats who detest Obamas shiny empty banality will be forced to bite the bullet for him just to prevent the GOP from getting elected the first female VP. But Im not sure thats enough to counteract moderates who may now swing heavily in favor of McCain.
At any rate, the lines of attack should prove instructive and, for the Dems sake, lets hope theyre a bit better thought out than those offered by CNNs John Roberts. Who really should wait for the next Obama Action Alert before he decides to speak again publicly.
For the narrative consistency and all.

YES WE CAN!

update 2: David Harsanyi calls Palin the libertarian vp candidate. Which might could just temper McCains progressivism even if she has to bat her pretty lil eyes to get his macho in check
Paul and I have already voiced our concerns about John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin for Vice-President. Now it's time to look at the upside. In fact, there is a lot to like about Palin. To begin with, her nomination provoked a typically mean-spirited reaction from the Obama campaign:
Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency.
Of course, "zero foreign policy experience" describes Obama, too, unless giving ill-informed campaign speeches constitutes "experience." So maybe, in the end, Palin will highlight Obama's lack of qualifications rather than undermining McCain's critique of them. Maybe.
Then, too, Palin's selection was probably the only one that could drive Obama's speech last night off the front pages. Just in time, perhaps, as the Obama bounce is now up to 8 points if you believe Gallup. (That tends to support the conclusion that Obama is an effective demagogue.)
Palin could help McCain with several demographics, like the pageant community. Here she is as Miss Wasilla 1984:
News reports indicate that the crowd in Dayton, Ohio responded enthusiastically to references to Palin as an athlete. She was the point guard on a state champion basketball team:
I think McCain has pretty much got the hunter/fisherman demographic sewn up, but Palin will certainly be a plus there, too:
She is a big supporter of the troops, and her oldest son is headed for Iraq:
I like this one; Palin is the one with the gun. Unlike Michael Dukakis, she actually knows how to fire it:
I think voters will like the whole Palin family. Her husband Todd is a commercial fisherman and also works in oil production on the North Slope. I think this photo is of Sarah working on the family's fishing boat; I'm told that as Governor, she still does that on weekends:
Todd Palin is a union member and a world-class snowmobile racer; here they are at a race:
A lot of voters are going to find this image appealing. I certainly do. In general, Palin's strengths seem to reinforce McCain's, but she could help a bit with blue-collar voters.
Substantively, Palin is a legitimate reformer. She killed the "bridge to nowhere," which is probably the only pork project most voters have heard of. She is a solid conservative and, perhaps best of all, she is an expert on energy and a staunch advocate of drilling. A large majority of Alaskans want develop ANWR; one hopes that Palin can change McCain's mind on that part of the energy issue.
I, for one, am very tired of hearing Democrats say that we can't drill ourselves out of our energy shortage. We could, actually, but since when is that the standard? Wharton Econometrics Forecasting Associates estimates that developing ANWR petroleum alone could create 736,000 American jobs... Permalink

BILL STUNTZ on Palin, Obama, and the experience issue. "Perhaps the jobs she has held are too small to count in a national presidential campaign. But that isn't obvious, not yet anyway. What matters more, to me and I bet to more than a few others, is what she's done in those jobs. The fact that her approval rating among Alaskans is in Mark Warner territory suggests that she might be the kind of governor Warner was in Virginia. If so, that should count for a lot--even if she hasn't had much time in office. Because time-serving won't count for much in the offices these four candidates are seeking."
Plus, fellow lawprof Ann Bartow on sexism: "The Supposedly Liberal Doods threw the most disgusting sexism at Hillary Clinton and her supporters during the Democratic primary. Then Obama picks Joe 'no friend of women' Biden as his running mate, rather than choosing somebody who would help build party unity. Now the Supposedly Liberal Doods are back in gear, throwing disgusting sexism at Palin. Why does it have to be like this? Hey Supposedly Liberal Doods, if you want Obama elected, stop burning bridges with women voters and start building some." Good advice. But is Biden really "no friend of women?"
More on experience, from Ross Douthat ("Yes, Joe Biden has more experience than Sarah Palin. But there's a not-implausible case to be made that Sarah Palin has more experience than ... Barack Obama!"), Jonathan Adler ("Sure, Sarah Palin was a 'hockey mom' before her entry into politics, but Barack Obama has never held a single full-time job for more than three years.") and Tyler Cowen ("Around the blogosphere you will see many left-wing writers criticizing Palin for lack of experience. Maybe this criticism is correct, but these commentators are falling into The Trap.")
But from Ramesh Ponnuru, cold water. Eric Scheie, meanwhile, comments: "I wonder whether a media analysis would reveal whether 'inexperienced' Republicans draw more media criticism than 'inexperienced' Democrats." Yes, as noted at TalkLeft, the Tim Kaine double-standard appears. Though that's more a case, perhaps, of a gender double-standard.
UPDATE: Via Ann Bartow, this post on the Palin pick: "It will complete the alienation of the rest of the Hillary supporters from the Obama camp. How? Thats easy the Obamabots will do it themselves. Go read the Washington Post blog or anywhere online where the Palin pick is being discussed, and youll see the trademark Obama misogyny already out in full force. Shes been on the ticket for two seconds and already the Obamabots are saying she 'looks like a porn star,' theyre making rude remarks about her childbearing, theyre ridiculing her intelligence."
Yeah, Obama's supporters are his biggest weak point. Including the ones in the media.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Ann Althouse and Rachel Sklar on the Palin pick.
YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Swimsuit competition? Yeah, that's a killer issue. "The Obamabots really aren't going to try to reverse that reputation for misogyny any time soon."
Right after watching the CGI re-enactment of Richard Candelarias 1945 dogfight in a P-51 Mustang with 2 ME-262s and 15 ME-109s, I read Roger Simons observation that McCain was apparently demonstrating a willingness to take more political risks, by choosing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate, than the One. John McCain has once again shown he is willing to, in fact eager to, move in a positive and (relatively) unexpected direction. He is his own man. Obama - the agent of change - picked the most conventional of the conventional. I think thats only half true: McCain will take risks, but only after figuring the odds. Those who watch the video will notice that Richard Candelaria took two huge risks in his epic dogfight, once against the ME-262 and another against an ME-109 flown by a better pilot than he was. They were calculated risks; but once taken were pursued without hesitation or reservation.
The parallels between any pilot and McCain are going to be obvious. He has the ability to wait patiently until his opponent commits himself to a move then ruthlessly strikes to exploit it. He gives nothing away to clue his opponent on which way he is going to turn. Then suddenly he snaps the stick. A collection of links by Glenn Reynolds reveals a sudden appreciation by McCains opponents of his unpredictability. Some are hesitating to criticize Palins relative youth and inexperience, lest they fall into the Trap. What trap? A classic AP head says it all: Analysis: Palins age, inexperience rival Obamas.
But the other piece of combat experience McCain endured, separate from his pilot training, one which every jailbird will appreciate, was his experience as a POW. Resistance in prison is one of the hardest forms of combat there is. As a prisoner you are always in the slower plane; the guard is always, by definition in the ME-262. A prisoner has only two friends: his mind and his nerve. McCain survived years of this and some of the skills he learned may have been on display just now. A number of political commentators thought John McCain would be easy meat for BHO. Maybe. Maybe not. Candelaria got the ME-262.
Read | (37) Comments "McCain suddenly persuades the dispirited and the cynical that he has something good to say and do. Im in. Sarah Palin is an inspired pick, both because of what it says about McCains gutsiness and his strategic willingness to take the angle shot, but also because of what it says about the Republican next gen. Shes got game, and Johnny Mac is willing to let her use her game. Notice how different that is, where Obama Know-nothing is looking to Joe Do-Nothing (for 30 years) as his successor. The dynamics of this race just reversed, big time."

Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am - for several reasons.
First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy...
And... for a bit of reading fun... here are the reactions of HillaryDieHards to the Palin pick:
They're Chatting up a Storm in Hillaryland [Jonah Goldberg]
Knowing the Palin-Monegan-Wooten investigation of abuse of power was their prime target, Ive been spending time this AM researching the chain of events in hopes of beating the media to the political and biased distortions creating a new, and false truth. I took into consideration that journalists and ardent supporters like Markg8 on Curts thread will be quick to post what they believe is damning evidence without reading more material on the issue.
So on that note, settle back and catch up with the reality of rural country politics. Id like to share with you what appears to be the crux of the story, using both pro and con Palin bloggers and news media.
A timeline of events in the so-called scandal
4-11-05: Investigation of Mike Wooten by AST (Alaskan State Troopers) over two year allegation of misconduct involving family members commences.
5-1-05: Domestic complaint incident involving Mike and Molly Wooten, Sarah and Todd Palin. Transcript of Sarah Palin with troopers. Also, Trooper notes on the same interview.
SUMMARY: Molly calls Sarah (not yet Governor) in fear from husband. They leave an open phone line where both Sarah and Mollys son hear Wooten threaten Molly and Sarahs father (hell eat an f*#king bullet). Palin doesnt call police because she doesnt want to hurt Wootens trooper career, nor make the situation worse . Providing it didnt get physical. Other incidents with Wooten noted.
8-18-05 Reinterview of both Sarah and Todd Palin. Trooper notes on Sarah interview. And Trooper notes on interview with Todd Palin, plus with bartender of Mug Shot Saloon.
SUMMARY: Sarah confirms an email on Aug 10th, 2005 to Col Julia Grimes, Director of AST (Alaska State Troopers) complaining of Wootens negative representation of the department. Wootens abuse of his authority and position in various instances. His racist attitudes towards native Alaskans (Todd Palin is a native Alaskan ), abuse of state resources (free gas/credit), illegal hunting activities, and Sarahs daughter (Bristol) being a witness to Wootens tasering of his 11 year old stepson (verified)
SUMMARY: Todd also confirms Wootens disparaging remarks about Alaskan natives, his consistent abuse of authority and position, plus his hunting violations. Bartender confirms Wooten involving himself in bar fight, misusing his position as a trooper. Also bartender confirms Wooten with girlfriend at the bar, who was later arrested for DUI.
This is no means a complete picture of all that happened but enough to give you a picture of an out of control trooper. ~~~
NOTE: Palin was not Governor of the State at this time and this transpired BEFORE her primary campaign against GOP competitor, Andrew Halcro. Coincidently, the same man leading the pack screaming scandal over the firing of Monegan.
The investigations against Wooten started more than a year before she was elected governor, and about two months before launching her campaign. ~~~
11-2005: Palin elected Governor of Alaska
3-1-06: Col. Julia Grimes findings on Wooten investigation results in suspension . for only *five* days.
What we can derive from the timeline is that the investigations and complaints against Wooten as a State Trooper (not to mention with problems exhibiting a derelict father who tasers his step son, and is a physically and verbally abusive, unfaithful husband per the transcripts and testimony) had started prior to Palins term as Governor.
We can also determine that this is a man who most certainly does not need to be a trooper, armed with a badge and gun. And, if not in rural Alaska, Wooten is a law official who would have been run out of most departments as a seriously troubled man with violent tendencies.
Per Col. Julia Grimes in the Fairbanks Newsminer on July 28, 2008 and showing how long this scandal has dragged out
The record clearly indicates a serious and concentrated pattern of unacceptable, and at times, illegal activity occurring over a lengthy period, which establishes a course of conduct totally at odds with the ethics of our profession, Col. Julia Grimes, then head of Alaska State Troopers, wrote in March 1, 2006, letter suspending Wooten for 10 days. After the union protested it, the suspension was reduced to five days.
She warned that if he messed up again, hed be fired.

1. Steps on the story of Obama's speech (and convention), and possibly the bounce coming from them, and wipes them off the news cycle. The Sunday news shows will be all-Palin, all of the time.
2. Sends Republicans into their convention on a huge head of steam.
3. Wipes out the image of McCain as the crotchety elder and brings back that of the fly-boy and gambler, which is much more appealing, and the genuine person.
4. Revs up the base AND excites independents, which no one else in the party, or perhaps in the world, could have accomplished.
5. Puts youth, change, and history on both of the tickets.

This usually pro-Obama lady really calls out her own.
(excerpt)
"She's also a governor of Alaska (my home state), the first woman in that office and the youngest elected in state history. She has an 80-plus percent approval rating. She has turned the state upside down with her reformist zeal and has made enemies of the Republican establishment. And she can talk energy policy, one of the biggest issues facing this country. Is she a gamble? Definitely. But so is Barack Obama, who has himself dismissed experience as a prerequisite for leadership, despite his spot atop the Democratic ticket. At this point, Palin is so unknown, there's no way to make a clear judgment about her. But listening to Obama supporters take to the airwaves to shriek with indignation about her lack of experience is just a little too rich. Where were they when Obama, two years into the Senate, announced his candidacy for president?"

All of which is a way of alerting the MSM especially that just because they have never been to a small town city council meeting doesnt mean they dont matter, or that those who participate as leaders in such settings havent picked up quite a lot along the way.
I fully expect to hear quite a few Sarah Palin speeches that include a paragraph that begins When I was mayor of Wasilla
The political and media elites have been laughing at Sarah Palins small town years. But every mayor and council member she meets over the next two months will have a bond with her that no one else on the national tickets can match.
Most commentators have figured out or soon will with the help of Beldar that she really, really knows the energy issue, and to a nation stunned by the sudden shock to their household budgets brought about by 30 years of indifference to new exploration, this will be a huge advantage. But so will be her experience with federal Endangered Species Act, which has been and remains central to my law practice and which interests very few other than those impacted by it.

KEYWORDS: STATE FUNDING

Time to keep a running list of Sarah Palins sins lovingly gathered, mostly in crazed speculative form, by members of the Church of Diversity and Otherness Coddling, and reprinted here, with my gloss, for your delectation.
1) Alan Colmes: Poor prenatal care (waiting too long after her water broke to get to a hospital) on Palins part created a Downs baby. Reached for comment, Science suggested Colmes shut his ignorant yap and for Chrissakes, get a tan.
2) Andrew Sullivan, et al: Concern that Palin taking time away from the young defective she should have shitcanned with a metal rod and some clinical suction (call it compassionate eugenics!) could cause even more harm to the useless little drain on society that should never have been born in the first place (call it the nurturers addendum for those greedy hick breeders who refused to take the high road and just snuff the damaged goods in utero). A child needs a stay-at-home-mother! if that child happens to be the child of a Republican breeder! Or havent you people been paying attention to the nuances of establishment feminist theory?*
3) Also via Sullivan: Two of the Palins children, Piper and Willow, share names with characters from shows that deal with witchcraft (Charmed, I believe?) though they were born and named before the show first aired. This is suggestive to Sullivan the last of the true conservatives (well, if you dont count Glenn Greenwald(s) and John Cole) that the Palins are into Satanic occultism. Either that, or they like Piper Laurie (Carries Mom! Fast Eddies gimp gal pal!) or small aircraft. In which case, just sick.
As for Willow a city in Alaska, a Val Kilmer dwarf movie, a tree? Please. This has Old Scratch worship written all over it.
(h/t TomB)
4) From Aravosis evidently frustrated in not yet being able to find pics of Palins husband getting busy with his boatmates (project name: GAY PORN COCK OF ATLANTIC COD HARVESTING) news that the Palins son was born eight months after the elopement of the still married parents. Suggesting that Sarah and the first dude of AK may have gotten busy in the backseat of a pickup to some INXS resulting in the necessity for a shotgun wedding that has lasted many many years
5) But at what cost? Whose children are whose, really? Can we tell? I mean, do they even have blood tests in Alaska? If I recall my Northern Exposure, those folks were living almost like blubber boiling Inuit igloo people until a New Yorker showed up to save them all from their backward-ass selves.
Thus far, Ive heard speculation, via Daily Kos, that two of Sarahs children are actually her grandchildren, and that in one case, incest was involved. Which, maybe these folks should get together with Alan Colmes to try to explain the phantom water breaking of a non-pregnant woman.
And if that fails, bring in Sullivan. Because as hell tell you, the Devil would have no problem orchestrating that kind of misdirection.
6) Palin, according to the feminists at Feministe and Pandagon, is an anti-feminist and anti-woman appealing as she does to women who feel inferior, and who dont adequately mistrust the patriarchy. Her deeds are unimportant. That she has made her own way on her own gifts and hard work suggests that she has adopted the mindset of a man. Because as everyone knows, we can never truly have equality or a strong female role model until we have a number of laws that give women special dispensation laws that are embraced and championed by women of white privilege, not callously ignored by moose dressing hicks with beehives and stretched uteri, married to men who, like, fish unironically.
Real feminists back Bill Clinton and John Edwards whose love for this country is so strong that sometimes they feel as though they have to stick their cocks into all of it.
7) Palins good looks (which really arent good at all: shes got ghastly hair, and the windburned color of a high plains strumpet) suggest she was chosen for the ticket, according to some CNN pool reporters, because shes giving McCain regular hummers. How else to explain it? I mean, Eleanor Clift and her fellow reporters literally laughed at the choice. Is McCain serious? This woman has virtually no experience! Unlike Obama who, though he doesnt have experience, cannot be held responsible for such a gaping hole in his resume. Institutional racism, you see. Experience is relative. Its a black thing, you wouldnt understand. Says Whitey.
8) The Politico reports, Presidential scholars say [Sarah Palin] appears to be the least experienced, least credentialed person to join a major-party ticket in the modern era.
Well, other than Obama, it goes without saying. But just who are these presidential scholars?:
UPDATE: After reading this article, the McCain campaign issued the following statement: The authors quote four scholars attacking Gov. Palins fitness for the office of vice president. Among them, David Kennedy is a maxed-out Obama donor, Joel Goldstein is also an Obama donor, and Doris Kearns Goodwin has donated exclusively to Democrats this cycle. Finally, Matthew Dallek is a former speech writer for Dick Gephardt. This is not a story about scholars questioning Gov. Palins credentials so much as partisan Democrats who would find a reason to disqualify or discount any nominee put forward by Sen. McCain.
Post-partisanship, people. Take a big whiff of the hope and change!
9) Maureen Dowd, aging beauty whose Manhattanite sensibilities and upper-crust connections mark her as, like, so totally different from Palin (Modo would never dress a moose, naturally unless it arrived at one of her parties wearing something completely inappropriate), that shes going to spend the next few months making sure she you know it:
The P.T.A. is great preparation for dealing with the K.G.B., President Palin murmurs to Todd, as they kiss in the final scene while she changes Trigs diaper. Now that Georgias safe, how bout I cook you up some caribou hot dogs and moose stew for dinner, babe?
My goodness! This hick comedy is golden!
Forced? Why, how dare you! Likely to alienate a great swath of voters? Well, perhaps. But thats assuming they can read. I mean, its not like shes writing this in Readers Digest, TV Guide or, you know, the Bible.
Really. Like that New Yorker cover, this is not really meant for certain people. Sniff.
10) Palin? Positively Cheneyesque. Probably actually uses Heinz 57 on her mooseburgers. The trailer trash queen of all that is evil and unholy
11) If youre going to RAPE THE SEAS, you need government approval. EARTH KILLER!
12) Josh Marshall asks, simply, Eagleton? The idea? That Palin is a head fake, a way to win the election (which of course the Republicans cant win, given the unseriousness of the pick, and how a horrified and insulted electorate will recoil from such calculated frippery but you know, just in case), at which point Palin, having propelled McCain into the White House, will step down, allowing the guy with the magic underwear to be named in her place. Evidently, this accomplishes uh, Im not really sure. Fucking over the people who voted for you for no reason that anyone can think of, maybe? (h/t Robin Mac and Pablo)
13) McCain has suspended the RNC convention because Palin is unprepared. Meaning, I guess, that she simply doesnt have the proper shoes! And that will not do!
Or else, the suggestion is thats shes not ready quite for primetime something that none of her appearances since the announcement of her selection seems thus far to corroborate. So its gotta be the shoe problem.
Blessedly, a potentially deadly hurricane has come along to give the GOP time to find themselves a fast-working Henry Higgins. And maybe bring in Stacey and Clinton to convince Gov Palin to trade in her pelts for something with better lines, and with subtle-but-interesting patterns that say, Yes, Im a conservative woman, but no, I wont, on my way to scrubbing the chum off the trawler deck, gut you with a Bowie knife for doubting creationism.
Which, I guess, would put them in rather famous company when it comes to thanking God for another pointed natural disaster coming along just when it was most needed (thanks to Victor)
14) Uh oh. Looks like Palin might have just lost the BK crowd
15) More Sullivan, who is now checking birth records. So far, he cant find the proper documentation. Which means, of course, that TRIGS MOTHER WAS A JACKAL!
666!!1!eleventy!
(thanks to topsecretk9)
WE DEMAND HEALTH RECORDS BE RELEASED! BLOOD TESTS BE PERFORMED! And please, IGNORE THAT OCCAMS RAZOR BEHIND THE CURTAIN!
16) More to come? Oh. I have no doubt.

update 2: Oopsie!
Be sure to read the comments for clarification.
It seems like people cant get enough of talking about Sarah Palin.
As always, please keep the discourse on a level you would not mind having your sainted mother read.
You know, my instinct is to not even address this crazy stuff, to just ignore it. But its out there, buzzing, so, I may as well jump in.
The doyens of uterine politics have decided that what matters about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not her politics, not her policies, but her periods.
Like some old, suspicious grandmother from the middle part of the twentieth-century, Alan Colmes counted back on his fingers and decided that - not that its anyones business - but maybe, just maybe Gov. Palin was pregnant when she got married!.
Oh, I know youve got the vapors, dont you? Apparently Colmes had them too. Sales of smelling salts just went sky-high!
The party that has claimed that pre-marital sex is groovy and doesnt matter, and - quite rightly - that ones worth should not be judged by ones sex life, is apparently all-of-a-doo-dah because of some scintillating rumors, good for whispering behind the hands, like a bunch of puritanical washerwomen. Puritans indeed. When they finished fainting, they apparently decided to start sewing the scarlet A, for Mrs. Palin. A-for-ADULTERER (cackle, cackle!)
No one should ever be judged, except Christians. If they have sex and dont abort, theyre fair for ridicule, smears and sport. And a womans choice should always be respected; unless shes the wrong sort of woman, the kind with an R after her name.
Apparently, since the left cant really go after Palin on her experience (Obama has equal or less, and hes running for the TOP job, not the bottom) or her record, which seems very appealing to a reform-minded electorate, the left has settled on the uterine comings-and-goings of not just Sarah Palin but of one of her witchy-named daughters, too.
Yes, the washerwomen are whispering and what theyre whispering is imaginative: According to them, Little Trig, (aka that seriously disabled Down Syndrome Baby that should have been aborted) whom Palin seems to have taken to the office and breastfed is not Palins son but her grandson. One of her daughters, you see, is the actual mother, and oh yes some of these whisperers even suggest that the baby has an extra chromosome because of wait for it incest.
Nice, eh? This is why good people do not go into politics, because this is what theyre subjected to. Apparently, in pictures last winter, layered in clothing (she lives in Alaska) Palin doesnt look pregnant enough for some people.
My best friend in the world wore a running suit to her baby shower and although she was 7 months along, she did not look pregnant at all. I hated her very much.
Anyhow, Andrew Sullivan seems to have decided to lead the charge on this one; he is calling for medical records to be released, ob-gyns to be interviewed, and he feels justified in this intrusion because this would be a private matter if the McCain-Palin campaign hadnt made the baby a key campaign point.
Hmmmm I thought the key campaign point was that Gov. Palin was a kick-ass reformer who knows energy and oil backward-and-forward, and that as regards little Trig, the material point - not the campaign point - is that a baby, known in advance to have an extra chromosome, was allowed to live. That is the fact that is so heartening to so many, but Ill play along
Lets suppose its true. Not the incest part, that is so icky-poo disgusting and utterly groundless - saying much more about those who suggested it, than about anything else - that well just kick it to the curb. But lets pretend its true, that the Palins daughter, succumbing to the same temptation so many teenagers succumb to, found herself pregnant.
She goes to her parents. They say well deal with this as a family. Sometime during the pregnancy, because we know Palin discussed it before Trigs birth, the baby was found to be a male with Down Syndrome.
(Lets forget for a moment that teenage mothers are rarely given amniocentesis tests, but mothers over 30 almost always undergo the testing. And lets also forget that for a mother over age 42, the chances of Downs Syndrome are 1 in 20. Were just pretending, after all.)
So now, the Palins are facing the possibility a teenage daughter perhaps giving birth to a baby who will require some mature parenting. Supposedly, they take the daughter out of sight and invest in a pregnancy suit for Grandma Sarah.
Then they let the baby live, and they love it. They announce the birth with joy, and claim the baby for their own, so their daughter - the public daughter of a public figure - will be allowed her privacy, and a chance to get on with her life.
This makes the Palins look bad how, exactly?
IF its all true, then the Palins handled their private business their private way, kept a family matter in the family, and shielded a daughter. Sullivans key campaign point of a commonly-aborted baby with an extra chromosome being allowed to live, and being parented by Gov. Palin and her husband is still valid, is it not?
A hating commenter on another post says this information - if its true - will shatter us. Really? I have just supposed the whole thing true, and I dont feel shattered. If the wild story is true, then I feel admiration.
As my center-left Lil Bro Thom wrote:
I think that if it turns out the baby is indeed her granddaughter, she might be perceived as doing something honorable, for the child and for her daughter.
Seedubya writes:
But waitlets assume for a second that this goofy idea is true. Lets say for a second that Governor Palin decided to adopt her daughters unplanned special-needs child and present him to the world as her own That would make her kind of a saint, wouldnt it?
I hate to give this absurd nonsense any more space. This story still only boils down to a baby that is - in our society - often looked at as disposable, being loved and welcomed by a family (see these adorable pictures of Trig being held by various siblings and his mom, Sarah).
And assuming it is true, so what? Then its about parents helping one of their children out of a rough patch, with discretion and privacy. Something that both the press, and the Democrats, should more than understand. Remember hands off Chelsea?
I have a question. Andrew Sullivan writes here that all of these whisperings and wonderings are coming to him from mainstream media sources.
Could it be, perhaps just perhaps I mean lets pretend that the press decided that they did not completely trust this wild rumor. Possibly these mainstream media sources - unsure that this story will shatter the GOP, and realizing that they will come off looking pretty dreadful if the story proves false (and a bit spiteful no matter what) - are carefully spooning it all out to a blog - because they dont much respect blogs - and hoping it turns to poison?
Frankly, seeing this internet rumor hit the UK papers makes me think that bloggers hyping nonsense do not do the credibility of the medium, or the bloggers in general, any favor. These terrified uber-haters are just making themselves look foolish, and further energizing the right by creating more sympathy for Palin.
Don Surber has another picture. Although true-believer whackjobs will never accept any evidence. How sad that it has come to this. As Betsy Newmark wrote, I hope Palin - who is, after all, hormonal and nursing - can handle everything that that will be thrown at her. If she just stays calm, she should be okay.

First, please read this e-mail from michellemalkin.com reader/commenter CantCureStupid, who is a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard. She asks for your thoughts and prayers as the people of his state ready for the storm:
Hi Michelle.
Im a new member to the site and a big fan, and right now Im experiencing a brief (and rare) moment of downtime. I am a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and we are up to our nostrils in preparations for Hurricane Gustav. There is a lot going on right now in south Louisiana, but mostly we are watching this monster bear down on us and hoping for the best. I wanted you to know, as a soldier who also had to suffer through the cluster that was Katrina, that we are 1000% better prepared (God Bless Bobby Jindal!!), and that while hoping for the best, we are completely prepared for the worst and ready to do what needs to be done to ensure the safety of the people of this state.
I am sure, as a fan of your site, that the vast majority of your fantastic commenters are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. Most of us are very aware of how sick the rest of the nation must be to hear the namby-pamby cry baby stuff that still comes out of the New Orleans area three years after Katrina, but I would ask for prayer and support for my soldiers, who have nothing to do with politics and who show up and serve whenever called upon.
God Bless America and God Bless Louisiana!!!
New Orleans is under mandatory evacuation orders this morning. Heres a disaster preparedness round-up from Glenn Reynolds. And Weather Nerd and hurricane blogger Brendan Loy is tracking the latest developments.
Per Gov. Bobby Jindals order at 4am this morning: As directed by Governor Jindal, Louisiana State Police will initiate contraflow at 4:00 AM Sunday morning. For the first time in history, the entire Louisiana coastal population will be evacuated due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gustav.
We know who wont be praying for their success and safety: tolerant, peaceful liberals wishing the worst on Republicans in Gustavs path and laughing about the possibility of grave destruction.

Stay Classy Daily Kos: Accusations Palin 'Faked Her Pregnancy' of Down's Syndrome baby>"...
Palin just announced that her daughter is pregnant - will keep the baby, and marry the father ............... FRegards
Maybe they passed the word and he wanted to not be in the standard issue gown.
I question why Joe Biden with his enormous I.Q. and five draft deferments and serial plagiarism questions anybody's qualifications or credibility.
"Somebody is going to question" seven times a day.
I question what a bisexual crack-smoking Islamo-Commie America-hating baby-killer from Kenya is doing as a candidate lecturing us on patriotism, morals, ethics, et cetera et cetera et cetera.
Did I answer your question and your demon's question regarding the photo. Because there'll be another question from this bunch in two seconds.
It's "why, Daddy" from here to the election--Democrats will present as Democrats, what you see on the bottom of an overturned garbage can.
So, Gov. Sarah Palins daughter, Bristol, age 17, is pregnant, and wants to marry the father of the baby.
The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Hey, since Trig is only four months old, and Bristol is five months pregnant I guess the KosKidz can finally put the it might still be a pregnancy suit nonsense to rest. Andrew Sullivan can stop demanding to hear from Palins doctor, too - which should be a relief to him, because it must have made him very uncomfortable to be demanding records when so many with medical issues, fight to legislate for medical privacy. Right?
Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support, the Palins said. The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couples privacy.
Ace says: contrast that to Obamas I dont want [my daughters] punished with a baby!
We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levis privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates, [Palin's] statement concluded.
Good luck on that, Mrs. Palin. The press rightly understood hands off Chelsea and they rarely if ever reported on the comings and goings of Al Gores kids, but you have an R after your name, not a D, so - Im sorry - but hands off Bristol will mean nothing to them.
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughters pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.
Well, it shouldnt. Hopefully, Sen. Obama, who said, leave my wife and kids out of it, will be classy about this and lead by example.
The politics of the uterus continues. Lets see who can be be bigger, and who can be smaller on this issue. The left just betrayed themselves as mean-spirited fools, capable of thinking anything about the Palin family. Perhaps, aware of that, theyll do better with this issue. I hope they do.
Do consider this: The Palins could have quietly gotten their daughter an abortion, and no one would ever have known about it. Instead, they choose to be who they are, and deal with it, knowing how the world is. Its not cowardly, whatever else you want to say about it. Quite the opposite; its authentic. These people have guts to spare.
My one prediction: the left - who really dont understand Christians as well as they think they do - will gleefully announce that this will kill Palin with the socials cons. She probably will lose a few of the extreme sorts, but over-all, youre going to see the Evangelicals support her.
Youll immediately hear some wag (left or right) say Palin needs to be home taking care of her family Which will not endear that wag to the millions of working mothers who do everything they can and more for their family, but still manage to have teenagers who do things teenagers do. Its a statement that does no one any good; avoid it!
It is going to be incredibly interesting to watch the shredding of caricatures, here.
Were going to watch the tolerant left, champions of sexually active teenagers, who believe that teenagers should be able to have an abortion without parental notification, and who routinely refer to Christians as uptight, sex-hating judgmental, moralizing prudes go all medieval denunciation on Bristol and her family. Ive already read a left-forum comment about the whore governor and her tramp daughter.
Were going to watch the intolerant right, who champion chastity because they know all too well the situation the Palin family faces, and how the road is, rally behind Bristol.
Let us not for a moment pretend were the situation reversed, were the Palins a Democrat family, the left would be rallying behind them, and some on the right would - lets be honest - be throwing the whore and tramp line around. If the Palins allow it - and they dont have to because this is their private business, and not yours or mine - this could be the beginning of a long-needed national discussion on teenage sexuality, responsible sex, and teen pregnancy. Hopefully it can be a clear and honest discussion instead of one corrupted by political point-grabbing but I somehow think the country has moved beyond healthy discourse.
So, lets sit back and watch. I know if Bristol were my daughter, Id be on her side; Id probably ask her to consider the question of early marriage very seriously. But I know families where young couples have married early and gone on to have very successful lives together. I know older couples who married and fell apart within a year, so let the discussion start without all of the theyre doomed sneering, or the theyre wonderful fairy tales.
This will also, once again, be a discussion about womens choices - and the culture of life, and the culture of death. The feminists on the left need to be careful, here. Theyve been arguing that 11 year olds are women for a long time. They cannot suddenly play the Bristol is a baby having a baby and shes too young to know her own choices, crapola.
Anyone want to make some predictions on what various bloggers, pundits and newspeople will say? And comedians?
The blogger to watch here: Ed Morrissey, who will be able to write compellingly, and more knowledgeably than most, about all of this.
I hope the Palins are as strong as they seem.
Deacon Greg - predictably - finds something utterly gorgeous in the midst of all this soap opera:
Solomon Henderson inherited just three things from his birth parents, who left him at an Ethiopian orphanage when he was 1 year old: a picture of Jesus, a plastic crucifix and HIV.
As one of some 14,000 Ethiopian children born with the virus every year, Solomons prospects for survival much less adoption were grim. But Erin Hendersons heart stirred when she saw him, and she decided, on the spot, to adopt him.
They told me that they werent sure he would live through the weekend, Henderson said by e-mail from her home in rural Wyoming, where she lives with her husband and 11 children, two of whom are HIV-positive adoptees from Ethiopia.
Solomon, now an active 2-year-old with chubby cheeks and a shy smile, is part of a small but growing movement: Americans adopting HIV-positive children from abroad.
Theres a dose of perspective, for you. Youll want to read it all.
Also never miss Ann Althouse: and her usual incredibly good commenters. Althouse notes the left is quickly going with the stupider narrative: Ladies: Put your career on hold until everything in youre family stops happening.
Bender in comments below: And dont tell me again that Republicans are out of touch. Dont tell me again that they do not know the experiences of everyday people. Once again, the Palins show themselves to be one of us.
