At one time, Limbaugh did his program from a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper he dubbed, with tongue-in-cheek grandiosity, the Excellence in Broadcasting Building. These days, he mostly broadcasts out of a studio in Palm Beach, Fla., which he calls the Southern Command, and describes on the air as a heavily fortified bunker.
In fact, Limbaughs show emanates from a nondescript office building on a boulevard lined with tall palms. There isnt even a security guard in the lobby. The elevator opens directly onto a pristine anteroom furnished in corporate glass and leather. An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption Americas Anchorman, reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the countrys most admired and reviled figures.
The anteroom was empty when I stepped off the elevator one afternoon in mid-February. Limbaugh receives very few visitors at work, and no journalists from the hated mainstream media. When I was buzzed into the control room, I was met by Bo Snerdly a very large man in a Huey Newton beret who glared at me. Are you the guy whos here to do the hit job on us? he demanded in a deep voice.
Absolutely, I said.
Snerdly, whose real name is James Golden, held my eyes for a long moment before bursting into emphatic laughter.
Its just that we arent used to seeing reporters here, said a woman named Dawn. She is a stenographer whom Limbaugh hired in 2001, after he went deaf. These days he has a cochlear implant that enables him to hear callers, but Dawn sends him real-time transcripts of on-air conversations, just in case.
The media doesnt know about this place, she said. They dont know where we are.

"There isnt even a security guard in the lobby."
You raise an interesting point. But I find it hard to believe with the public record of Rush’s wealth, that he does not have security.
And based on his residence and vehicles, one would expect there to be more than adequate security around the clock.
One of the conditions for such an article would be not to mention it. That’s speculation on my part.
Basically, without Elrushbo, we would have very little conservative talk or word out there. His success got the others to try and give it a shot. Without TALK RADIO, Conservatives HAVE NO VOICE in the media, none.
It was well worth reading the whole thing. Thanks for posting the link.
Rush is an American original. Even the NYT had to give him his due.
I find that very weird.
I truly believe that
There at least a half a dozen
Titter
Have you seen them?
He’s hooked on the fragrance of Gardenia-scented candles.
He talked about it on his show because he knew it was coming out in the article.
I guess everyone has a right to some idiosyncracy that others don’t “get”.
In most cases others wouldn’t even know such details unless someone wanted to tell on themselves.
Yep - and all at the top of the piece...
No one sees them they are like ninjas
I think the strength of his personality and his genuine congeniality might have surprised the reporter some. They may hate his political leanings, but how can you hate a man that is just so much fun to be around?
I find that very weird.
I have a family member - 6 foot 4 - black belt - retired police chief - who's the same way - - has a very sensitive sense of smell. His wife seems to always have a scented candle burning somewhere. After a while it seems normal...
Dear Rush -
If you lurk here on FR, the nagging is about to begin!
BEEF UP THE SECURITY!
Then, secondly, if you sit in a room with a scented candle burning for as little as 45 minutes, enough VOC’s are emitted by a candle burning for 45 minutes in an average room to make a child sick. - I know, I sound like Al Gore, but if you are getting headaches and don’t know why, here’s a clue.
Nanny Nag Twinkie
It isn't the candle part that I find weird. It's the staff lighting them to "greet" him every day that I find weird. I thought he was a manly man. Now we find he likes to be pampered.
What a great portrait. Reminds me a little of Skrebneski's work...
All in all, a fair, informative article.
Rush, if you lurk here, upgrade your security NOW.
That was my first thought.
Set him up for a kill, or a kidnapping.
