The Battle Of Poltava should have been a foregone conclusion: 12,000 Swedish effectives cut off from their supply lines with their leader incapacitated by wounds, making a last-ditch offensive maneuver versus 50,000+ well-supplied Russians fighting in their own homeland from a strong defensive position.
And yet, one corps of 4,000 Swedish infantry came within yards of breaking the Russian line - only their cavalry's failure to coordinate effectively with their infantry's advance stopped the Swedes from breaking through.
The Russians had a 4:1 numerical advantage. They fought from a defensive position with advantageous internal lines and cover. They had 100 artillery pieces. They were fully supplied.
