Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr will announce Monday that he will run for president as a Libertarian, a source close to the Georgian told CNN.
Barr will officially declare his candidacy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington. The four-term congressman left the GOP in 2006, saying that Republicans had "lost their core principles."
Barr made a name for himself in Congress for his ardent conservative philosophy and his role in President Clinton's impeachment. He lost a primary election in 2002.
Last month, Barr formed a presidential exploratory committee as he weighed a run for the White House. The source said that Barr had been considering a presidential bid "for several months. He currently runs Liberty Strategies, a consulting firm in Atlanta and Washington.
Barr joins a handful of other candidates seeking the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination including former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Libertarians meet in Denver on May 22 for a four day convention where members will choose the party's presidential nominee.

We did. It didn't work.
Obama hasn’t had this much fun since he was in the back of the limo with that coke buddy.
The Libertarian party is pro-abortion, pro-drug, etc., etc..
Not at all conservative.
If it was Clinton against McCain I would probably vote for Barr.
But since it will be Obama against McCain, I’m going to have to vote for McCain if he has any chance of winning my state. Obama is just too extreme.
Is it me or is every Democrat candidate the "most left-wing in history"? I distinctly remember hearing this about Gore and Kerry.
A real conservative for change was Ronald Reagan. When he saw a crisis in his party, he worked to change the party. He didn’t give up. HE kept fighting on.
People like Pat Buchanan and Bob Barr are conservatives who walk out when their brand of orthodoxy isn’t followed 100%.
I have plenty of problems with the RINOs...and my volunteer time and monies aren’t going to the party. Instead, I’m giving for electable conservative Republicans.
Barr would do well to do that, too. IMO.
Otherwise the electable conservatives will be defeated by invigorated Democrat operatives.
You people in New York, Illinois, California, Maryland, Vermont, DC, and Taxachussetts, by all means cast a protest ballot for Bob Barr. Those of us in red and purple states regrettably need to act like adults and vote for McCain.
You got it!
If the Republicans lose, it's because they put out a pi$$ poor candidate. Don't blame it on the voters - blame it on the candidate - and the party that doesn't do everything it can to groom good candidates from the git-go.
I hate the thought of living through an Obama presidency - but unlike some others on this site - I don't consider a McCain presidency to be a victory either. I have no idea what that man is planning to do - I don't think he knows either. He scares me to death, because he will have no opposition & I know for a fact that he despises conservatives.
As this country polarizes the lefties become more lefties.
“I think we can all agree that in the short-term, our government’s growth is in the upward direction.”
In the SHORT-TERM? Whats that, since 1913, 1916 ? FDR?
When exactly did the government not grow?
This is how conservatives snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Were we about to win something? We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by spending 30 years working for GOP control of the gov't, only to have W and the congress piss it away on more spending and bigger gov't than the dems ever even dreamed of.
So a liberal RINO is better than supporting a Conservative/libertarian who might actually succeed at REDUCING the size of FedGov? What’s “adult” about that except that electing McLame would mean the country would be screwed, as would the Constitution? I guess that’s what you mean... forcible adult (XXX) behavior? Why would you wish that on us? Rape is outlawed by every CIVILIZED society!
. Not true. that's one of the few big debates within the party.
pro-drug, etc., etc..
They are not pro-drugs, they are pro allowing people to do what they want in their own homes.
Not at all conservative.
Compared to who, the GOP? What is conservative about being the biggest spenders ever? What is conservative about massive new entitlements?
“I don’t consider a McCain presidency to be a victory either.”
Yes, Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher was lousy, but Chancellor Adolf Hitler was a disaster.
Vote against disaster.
After all, McCain has no chance of winning in these places, this could be an opportunity to send "a protest vote."
You are a Bitcon.... a bitter conservative searching mighitly for someone upon to heap your wrath after not having a conservative in your precise narrow tolerance win the nomination.
Your life is going to be a misery because ther will be no such nominee in the forseeable future.
I knew Wright reminded me of someone!
