Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr will announce Monday that he will run for president as a Libertarian, a source close to the Georgian told CNN.
Barr will officially declare his candidacy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington. The four-term congressman left the GOP in 2006, saying that Republicans had "lost their core principles."
Barr made a name for himself in Congress for his ardent conservative philosophy and his role in President Clinton's impeachment. He lost a primary election in 2002.
Last month, Barr formed a presidential exploratory committee as he weighed a run for the White House. The source said that Barr had been considering a presidential bid "for several months. He currently runs Liberty Strategies, a consulting firm in Atlanta and Washington.
Barr joins a handful of other candidates seeking the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination including former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Libertarians meet in Denver on May 22 for a four day convention where members will choose the party's presidential nominee.

He’s sort of nuts, but I’ll vote for him. Please everyone, spare me the “vote for the liberal Republican because he is better than the dem” argument. Where has that gotten us? A government that is bigger and more intrusive than ever.
And then, please spare me the “Well thats ok in theory but “THIS YEAR” its just too important”. Y’all say that every year.

This is how conservatives snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
That’s right Barr...do your part to insure a RAT Trifecta!
I guess working for the ACLU was getting boring.
Democrat or Republicrat
Not a dimes bit of difference between the 2
This will particularly useful when dems go to court to block McCain from the Ballot because he was born in Panama.
I’m going to think about voting for him too. I too, am tired of the same old arguments. People have got to stop voting for the status quo, it just gets worse every year.
I think we can all agree that in the short-term, our government's growth is in the upward direction. We can choose slower growth by electing a Republican, or we can split our base by considering Bob Barr (who is a good man, btw), or deal with an upward spiral of growth made possible if Hillary or Barak Obama are elected.
Unless he can get one of the girls from "The Hills" to run as VP, (aren't they too young?) this is an announcement where you just say so what? |
Bob Barr's insidious plan continues to unfold. Take over black church. Say crazy things. Instill member of congregation as Dem nominee. Destroy credibility of nominee. Run for president!!
Now I'll that's left is to destroy McCain and the WORLD IS MINE!!!!
BWHAHAHAHAHAH
Another nutty loser who needs attention
Boy....Soros is really spreading his money around....
Isn’t this the guy who railed against the Army allowing pagan religious practices on post? Not very libertarian at all.
If they would build from the ground up, running people for city council, county supervisor, state representative, and on and on, perhaps they could become a real alternative to the 21st Century Whigs, ie, the GOP.
I could support something like the Constitution Party...if they actually decided to build from the bottom up.
Separated at birth?
So the schmuck wants Obama to be President?
Come on, there’s NO POINT in running when you haven’t a snowball’s chance in Hell of winning more than 2% of the vote. I understand being ticked off at the Republican Party - because I also feel that way, knowing that Barr is correct in saying that it has strayed far from our values. But handing victory to the most Left-Wing candidate in our nation’s history while we are at war is simply INSANE!!!
I know the theory...”it’ll be so bad under the Dems that Conservatism will make a huge comeback, etc., etc.” Well, guess what, there’s no certainty that this will happen - you do remember President Dole, don’t you? No? Why not, we were supposed to get rid of that hick Clinton after one term?
I don’t like the direction of the Republican Party in the last several years, and I despise McCain. But I love my country more, and will not stand by while the likes of Obama tear it to shreds.
Barr should NOT run, and I say that as someone who probably agrees with him 98% of the time on the issues and think he’d make a fantastic President. Put your ego on hold, Bob, so that we don’t have to deal with the first Muslim President and his insufferable wife. Do the troops in Iraq a favor and stay off the ballot - because by being on it you’ll make their entire mission and the deaths of 4,000 of our finest worthless.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.
