Abused Indonesian Maid Gets Paltry Compensation
Nour Miyati
A High Court judge in Riyadh on Monday awarded SR2,500 [approximately $667] in compensation to Nour Miyati, an Indonesian maid whose toes and fingers were amputated following alleged abuse by her sponsor and his wife.
Reviewing a previous ruling, the judge also dropped charges against the wife of Miyatis sponsor, who had admitted abusing the maid, and overturned the 35 lashes she was sentenced to. Meanwhile, the sponsor was found innocent due to a lack of evidence.
According to the judge, there was not enough evidence, said Nasser al-Dandani, the lawyer appointed by the Indonesian Embassy to represent the maid.
Previously, in December 2005, after she was questioned without the presence of an Indonesian Embassy representative, a judge at the Court of Summation sentenced Miyati to 79 lashes for making false accusations against her sponsor and his wife— a ruling that was reversed in April 2006.
Miyatis case came to light after her sponsor brought her to a Riyadh hospital in March 2005, afflicted by gangrene in her fingers, toes and a part of her right foot. She initially claimed her sponsor tied her up for a month in a bathroom and beat her severely, injuring her eyes and knocking out some of her teeth.
Miyatis case has been delayed on multiple occasions on account of her sponsor and his wife repeatedly failing to attend court hearings.
According to al-Dandani, the judge did not consider the injuries or amputations to have been caused by the sponsor and his wife despite medical reports to the contrary, nor did he take into account that she had not been paid her salary for 18 months, or that she was in good health, with working limbs, when she came to work in the country.
In Saudi Arabia, judges compensate injuries and lost limbs in car accidents and medical malpractice according to a standard value, Miyatis lawyer said, adding that according to some estimates, his client deserved at least SR400,000 [approximately $107,000].
The only thing the judge looked at was the report by a committee appointed by the court to evaluate compensations for accidents. This committee of four men did not once see Miyati or speak to her. I dont know what they based their evaluation on and how the judge could accept that. Al-Dandani is to appeal the ruling at the Court of Cassations.

Troops in Iraq Kill 13 Enemy Fighters, Catch 79 Suspects
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 22, 2008 Coalition and Iraqi forces killed 13 enemy fighters, detained 79 suspects, and uncovered makeshift bombs and other weapons in recent operations in Iraq, military officials said.
In Iraq yesterday:
— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers killed 11 enemy fighters in an ongoing operation in the New Baghdad security district of the Iraqi capital. Military officials said troops killed the combatants either to defend themselves from immediate danger or to prevent the enemy from planting homemade bombs in the area.
— Coalition forces caught two individuals fleeing a mud hut near Beiji that was doubling as a weapons cache. As troops returned to the site, two enemy fighters hiding inside threw grenades. Forces engaged and killed the individuals. In a nearby raid, troops detained one wanted man and 12 other alleged associates of a bombing network that operates in the Tigris River valley.
— Coalition forces captured six enemy fighters in Mosul, including an alleged al-Qaida in Iraq senior leader who is believed to lead attacks against coalition forces. In Sinjar, about 70 miles west of Mosul, forces captured a suspected foreign-terrorist smuggler and one additional suspect.
— Troops captured a man believed to be a terrorist smuggler and seven additional suspected terrorists in Mosul. The wanted man allegedly is involved in al-Qaida foreign-terrorist-network operations and was found with several international phone numbers in his pocket at the time of his detention, military officials said.
— In a simultaneous raid around Baghdad, coalition forces captured six suspects military officials have linked to Iranian-backed special groups. One detainee is an alleged weapons smuggler and kidnapper wanted for supplying lethal aid to enemy fighters in the Shula area of the Iraqi capital.
— Coalition forces detained three suspects while targeting an al-Qaida in Iraq logistics and administration assistant near Abu Ghraib, about 15 miles west of Baghdad. In the Iraqi capital, meanwhile, troops captured a wanted man allegedly linked to suicide-bombing operations.
— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained three suspected enemy fighters while conducting an intelligence-driven operation at 2 a.m. in the Abu Tshir neighborhood of southern Baghdad.
— Coalition and Iraqi forces seized weapons stockpiles totaling scores of mortar and ammunition rounds, assault rifles, rockets and launchers, explosives-making materials, and homemade bombs in the Sadr City, Kadamiyah, Rusafa, Karkh and New Baghdad sections of the Iraqi capital and a cache about eight miles south of Baghdad.
During operations in Iraq on May 20:
— Several coalition Black Hawk helicopters inserted teams of Iraqi special weapons and tactics troops and U.S. Special Forces soldiers into a village about nine miles northeast of Baghdad. The combined forces captured 29 insurgents, including the senior and mid-level al-Qaida in Iraq leaders in the Mullah Eid area.
— Iraqi national police forces with support from police transition team members captured four suspected insurgents during an operation in Jisr Diyala. The detainees had outstanding warrants for terrorist activities, military officials said.
— Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists east of Samarra while targeting associates of a slain senior al-Qaida leader killed during an operation earlier in the day.
— Iraqi and coalition forces discovered weapons and multiple makeshift bombs in the Sadr City section of the Iraqi capital, and several weapons caches in southern Baghdads Rashid district. The finds included homemade explosives, bomb-making materials, a rocket-propelled grenade with launcher, and mortar rounds.

Al Qaeda linked Islamic militants are suspected of rampant intellectual piracy in the Philippines, particularly of Hollywood films, to raise funds.
According to Optical Media Board chairman Edu Manzano, the Abu Sayyaf - blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the South-East Asian country - are likely behind the illegal copying of movies onto DVDS, which are then peddled at Manila shops by migrant Muslim traders.
A students association has condemned the uniform worn by girls at government schools, saying it encouraged rape and premarital sex. The white blouse is too transparent for girls and it becomes a source of attraction, National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia vice-president Munirah Bahari said in a statement yesterday.
It becomes a distraction to men, who are drawn to it, whether or not they like looking at it, she said, calling for a review of uniform policy so that it did not violate Islamic ideals. Female students at government schools have a choice of wearing a white blouse with a knee-length skirt or pinafore.
US hospitals have no capacity for terror attack
A survey of US hospitals and emergency rooms suggests they would not be able to cope with the surge of casualties that might follow a terror attack.
I agree Cindy.

3 arrested in shooting deaths of 2 LSU students

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Three young men, including two who had been working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, have been arrested in the killing of two Louisiana State University graduate students late last year, authorities said Thursday.
Michael Jermaine Lewis, 19, and Casey Gathers, 20, were arrested Thursday and were being booked on two counts each of first-degree murder, said Gary Durham, acting chief of the LSU police department. Devin Jamell Parker, 19, was arrested Wednesday on an unrelated robbery charge, also was being booked on the murder counts.
Authorities refused to take questions after announcing the arrests at a news conference, so it wasn’t clear what led police to the men or whether they had lawyers.
Col. Kirk Frith of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office earlier said deputies and state police arrested one man on a fishing boat in Freshwater City and another on a dock as he left a boat in Intracoastal City.
Intracoastal City is about 75 miles southwest of Baton Rouge. Freshwater City is on the Gulf another 10 miles from the capital, but more than 35 miles by road from Intracoastal City.
The bodies of Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam, both doctoral students from India, were found late Dec. 13 in Allam’s apartment on the LSU campus. Each had been shot once in the head. Komma was bound with a computer cable, and Allam was found near the door.
At the time, police described the attack as a home invasion but said there was no forced entry at the apartment complex, a cluster of three-story cinderblock buildings near a high-crime area of Baton Rouge.
Allam, 33, was a chemistry student from Hyderabad, India, and Komma was a 31-year-old biology student from Kurnool, India. The shootings shocked parents of many Indians studying in this country because the South Asian nation sends many students here each year.
The killings occurred near the end of final exams, as many of the university’s 28,000 studentsand possibly potential witnessesheaded home. Police said they also had to overcome reluctance to talk to investigators among some international students, who worried that doing so might damage their visa status.
Thanks for the (unbelievable) update Cindy.
Thanks for the links MamaD. I worry about the future of the U.K. They are pretty overrun with the fanatics.

Recent convert to Islam is arrested after bomb explosion in restaurant
ARTICLE SNIPPET: A Muslim convert with a history of mental illness who was preyed upon and radicalised injured himself yesterday after a device he was carrying exploded in a busy shopping centre in Exeter.
Nicky Reilly, 22, received serious facial injuries after the device went off at lunchtime in a family restaurant at the new £230 million Princesshay shopping centre. Another device was defused by bomb disposal teams.
ARTICLE SNIPPET: Mr Reillys neighbours described him as naive and easily lead.

“Algeria: Christian faces jail for her faith”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Algiers, 22 May (AKI) - An Algerian woman could face up to three years in prison for converting from Islam to Christianity.
The country’s public prosecutor has accused Habiba Qawider of abandoning the Islamic faith without the permission of government authorities, reported Arab TV network al-Arabiya quoting evangelical pastor Mustafa Karim.
The 37 year-old is currently facing charges in a court case in the town of Tiaret, 400 kilometres west of capital Algiers.
The young woman was arrested at the beginning of April by police who stopped her while she was travelling aboard a bus from Tiaret to Orano.
Police reportedly handcuffed her after finding 10 copies of the Bible in her handbag.
In Algeria, Christian churches must seek special permits from the Ministry for Religious Affairs to practise their activities.
Under a law passed in 2006, Algerians must also have a permit to practise any religion that is different to Islam.”

Denmark evacuates embassies in Algeria, Afghanistan [Cartoon of Muhammad Backlash Fears]

Posted on April 23, 2008 2:53:19 AM PDT by BGHater
COPENHAGEN, Denmark - The Danish Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it has evacuated its staff from embassies in Algeria and Afghanistan because of threats after newspapers reprinted a cartoon depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
Embassy employees have been moved to secret locations in both countries’ capitals but continue to work, Foreign Ministry spokesman Erik Laursen said.
The announcement comes after Danish intelligence officials warned of an “aggravated” terror threat against Denmark since newspapers in the country in February of a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
The warning specifically singled out North Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The threat “is so concrete that we had to take this decision,” Laursen told The Associated Press. “The decision is based on intelligence,” he said, declining to elaborate.
The staff in Algiers was relocated “some days ago” and employees in Kabul were moved Wednesday, he said. Laursen stressed that the embassies have not been closed and can still be reached by telephone and e-mail.
“Right now, we are in places that we consider safe,” he said.
The cartoon showing Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban. It was one of 12 Danish prophet drawings that caused riots in the Muslim world in 2006 and it was reprinted on Feb. 13.
Newspapers said they reprinted the cartoon in support of free speech after police revealed a plot to kill the creator of the caricature. Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.

Coalition forces capture four suspected Special Groups criminals
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition forces captured four suspected Special Groups criminals Friday in Rashadiyah, about 15 km north of Baghdad.
Acting on intelligence information, Coalition forces targeted a suspected Special Groups weapons smuggler accused of bringing explosively-formed penetrators, rockets and other weapons into Diyala Province from Iran. The suspect is believed to be responsible for multiple attacks on Iraqi Security and Coalition forces using EFPs, rocket-propelled grenades and sniper fire in the Husayniyah area.
Coalition forces approached what appeared to be the suspects residence, where they detained four suspected accomplices without incident.
Despite their attempts to evade Iraqi Security and Coalition forces, these criminals are running out of places to hide, said Navy Cmdr. Ed Buclatin, MNF-I spokesperson. We will find them and hold them accountable for their violent actions against the Iraqi people.
