RELEASE No. 20080501-11
May 1, 2008
Iraqi Special Operations Forces capture Special Groups commander (Baghdad)
Multi-National Corps Iraq PAO
BALAD, Iraq Iraqi Special Operations Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces captured a Special Groups commander in Baghdad April 30.
ISOF conducted the operation to detain the Special Groups commander who has been leading attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces in the area. The man is believed to be a weapons smuggler, and is reported to conduct improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks.
Intelligence reports link him to an IED attack in October 2007 that killed four U.S. soldiers, and a mortar attack in October 2007 that killed one U.S. Soldier.
During the operation, ISOF received small-arms fire from enemy fighters.
Two armed individuals were seen running towards ISOF soldiers and were shot and killed.
The detention of this suspect will likely affect the ability of Special Groups criminals to conduct attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces in the area, and will possibly lead to the detention of additional criminals in the area, said Col. Bill Buckner, Multi-National Division Iraq spokesman.

“Investigative Project Releases Gov’t Memos Curtailing Speech in War on Terror”
by Steven Emerson
IPT News
May 2, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is refusing to identify the “influential Muslim Americans” and “leading U.S.-based scholars and commentators on Islam” who met with Secretary Michael Chertoff in helping shape a softer approach to government lexicon about terrorists and their ideological motivations.
“Our policy is we don’t comment on the Secretary’s private schedule,” spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the IPT. Nor would she identify any of the participants’ organizational affiliation.
DHS and the State Department’s Counterterrorism Communications Center each issued reports urging government employees to avoid words like “jihad,” “mujahedeen” or any reference to Islam or Muslims, especially in relation to Al Qaeda. The Investigative Project on Terrorism is making the documents available for the first time here and here.
As we reported last week, the memos say a change in language from the U.S. government is needed to win the hearts and minds of moderate Muslims and avoid glamorizing terrorists motivated by religious ideology. “Moderate” is also frowned upon in the memos, though, with “mainstream” or “traditional” suggested as replacements.”
