OK everyone, it's time for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now" post.
I like to get a feel for what Freepers are reading these days. It can be anything...a best seller, a literary classic, a trashy pulp novel, a scientific journal, etc.
Do not demean this thread with posts like "I'm reading this Thread right now". It became un-funny a long time ago.
I'll start. I've just started "One Square Mile Of Hell: The Battle For Tarawa" by John Wukovitz.
Rather than a minute by minute account of the battle, it takes a more personalized view of the battle by interviewing a few combatants and the families of those who died in the battle. I wasn't sure I'd like this format at first - but am really starting to get into this book.
Well...what are YOU reading right now?
BOOK BUMP! (I’m off to work; will check in tonight.)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. Very Good. The movie was actually okay as well.
Cathedral, Forge and Waterwheel: Technology and Invention in the Middle Ages by Frances and Joseph Giles.
There’s a book called The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Very funny.
I ordered “The Rebel and the Rose: James A. Semple, Julia Gardiner Tyler, and the Lost Confederate Gold.”
“Surrender is not an Option” - John Bolton
It looks intriguing; I’ll try it. Thanks for the tip!
When I came home yesterday my copy was here. I just finished it.....It’s REALLY good. A page turner for sure. If you haven’t finished it I’ll just tell you that there’s a happy ending!!!!!
Finished Dead Heat about 5 minutes ago. I certainly wouldn’t count out his predictions in this one as the last ones have been so prescient. I just got it yesterday after work and couldn’t put it down, I slept for a few hours and then I picked it up this morning. Great Read (oh, and, BTW, there’s a happy ending.: ))
“The Ezekiel Option”, by Joel Rosenberg.
Previously: “The Copper Scroll” (another Rosenberg book), recommended by other Freepers....
- John
Can't think of the author's name...it's in my room.
I think you are right in the sense that he never questioned the amorality of the Africans who were deeply involved while seeming to be more indignant about European involvement.
While in one sense he did condemn the capitalist system,I was surprised that the average profit was only 10% and the risk was very high. And,I must say, that although I am a free marker supporter, there are SOME aspects of capitalism(pornography, cheap illegal immigrant labor)that distress me greatly.
I’m reading both, “Abolition of Britain” by Peter Hitchens which is non-fiction, and “Forever” by Pete Hamill, which is fiction, and, I’ve been told, the story on which the Fox TV show, “New Amsterdam” is based.
Here are my contributions, for what they’re worth. This time of year starts my busy season at work. 60 hour weeks are not uncommon, so the “heavier” reading I do in the slower winter months are replaced by lighter fare:
“Stalin’s Ghost” - The last Arkady Renko novel by Martin Cruise Smith (Man, I love him. All of his novels are so different, and so interesting!)
“From Garden to Vase” - by Linda Beutler - Sort of work-related, but it shows you how to grow and use a lot of cut flowers, foliage, berries, branches, etc. in floral displays.
“Designing With Succulents” - by Debra Lee Baldwin. A GORGEOUS book using succulent plants (like cactus, but not as prickly) in your garden. Amazingly, you can use a lot of succulents even in cold climates, which I did not know.
“Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World” - by Joann Weaver. Highly recommended for ANY busy woman. It shows you how to slow down and pay attention to God’s design for your life while you’re trying to be ‘Everything to Everyone.’ (Come on! You know you’re guilty of this, Ladies!)
“A Shop of One’s Own” - Compiled by ‘Victoria’ Magazine. Women talk about their shops, their inspirations, how they succeeded, etc. Also work related, but someday... :)
