US: Saddam paid for lawmakers' Iraq trip

WASHINGTON - Federal prosecutors say Saddam Hussein's intelligence agency secretly financed a trip to Iraq for three U.S. lawmakers during the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion.

An indictment in Detroit accuses Muthanna Al-Hanooti of arranging for three members of Congress to travel to Iraq in October 2002 at the behest of Saddam's regime. Prosecutors say Iraqi intelligence officials paid for the trip through an intermediary.

In exchange, Al-Hanooti allegedly received 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil.

The lawmakers are not mentioned but the dates correspond to a trip by Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, David Bonior of Michigan and Mike Thompson of California. There was no indication the three lawmakers knew the trip was underwritten by Saddam.

“Prosecutors said Al-Hanooti was responsible for monitoring Congress for the Iraqi Intelligence Service. From 1999 to 2002, he allegedly provided Saddam’s government with a list of U.S. lawmakers he believed favored lifting economic sanctions against Iraq.

In exchange for coordinating the congressional trip, Al-Hanooti allegedly received 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil, prosecutors said.”

“This is the direct result of our dear President Bush wasting time and energy playing footsie with his “loyal opposition”.

Just a quick reminder, President Bush isn’t running for office. No need to bring him up and bash him every time some article shows up on FR. ;)

translation: he was responsible to Saddam's ISI for sniffing out and cultivating US traitors in Congress

Yes and thank you for both updates Grampa Dave.

It’s spring cleaning and the dirt is being swept up now, I believe.

The Democrats all do it:

Bill Clinton’s Soviet Connection

During the 1992 presidential campaign, Bill Clinton’s travels abroad became a campaign issue. Then-President Bush criticized Clinton’s participation in anti-Vietnam War demonstrations while in England. He said that “to be in a foreign country and demonstrate against your own country when it’s at war — that’s wrong.” Clinton demonstrated against a war that he avoided by lying about his desire to go into an ROTC program back in the U.S.

Bush also raised questions about Clinton’s student trip to the Soviet Union. The liberal media didn’t like that. Denver Post columnist Ed Quillen wrote, “Bush hints that when Bill Clinton visited the Soviet Union on a student tour, Clinton may have met with KGB officers. Bush implies that something sinister was arranged. What was it?… The KGB sent a brainwashed Bill Clinton back to become governor of Arkansas.” Quillen said that was “preposterous.”

It may not be so outlandish. Speaking at an Accuracy in Media luncheon in Washington, D.C., Ivian C. Smith, the former FBI special Agent-in-Charge in Arkansas, voluntarily brought up the issue of Bill Clinton’s tour of the old Soviet Union. “That’s never been satisfactorily explained,” he said. Smith said that while Clinton was never formally branded a security risk by top officials in the bureau, many believed that he had never fully explained his travel to the Soviet Union. As President, Clinton expressed concern during his affair with Monica Lewinsky that a foreign government was tapping his phones.

..... and let’s not forget other Demagogues collaborating with the enemy, such as Teddy the Swimmer in the early ‘80s trying to work with the Kremlin to defeat Ronald Reagan in the ‘84 election, or Kerry, Harkin et al collaborating with the Sandinistas in the mid-80s, or all the ‘Rats that have recently jetted off to kiss up to Baby Assad in Damascus, etc.

Nah, oil was in the $60s back then.

2002? Try $23 a barrel.

In another time this would be shocking news.

And if they were members of another political party, the pressure from news coverage would see them drummed out by this Friday. McDermott is such an assclown, I find it hard to believe he didn't know - and even relish - the source of his trip's funding.

"Is it common for U.S. Representatives to accept trips from people they know nothing about?"

Dunno, but my Mamma always told me never to get into a car with a stranger. Seems like that would be good advice for congresscritters and planes, too.

Yup, you might get elected to Congress and treated like a prophet by the media. Just ask Cindy.

We all know that and it doesn’t change anything. Jorge Arbusto is a tool of the New World Order first and an American second.

I heard this story on the radio and the AP did not list the party of the members of congress. Good to see this article did!

Too bad the President seems to have lost his testicles somewhere in the last four years.

Last four years? George left his balls in the Texas Ranger dugout many years ago.
