80th Oscars a Dud, Preliminary Ratings Show 14 Percent Lower Than Least-Watched Ceremony

LOS ANGELES — The Oscars were a ratings dud. More so than usual, even.

Preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast were 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings were also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.

The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

[Snip]

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

... so why watch what was otherwise a parade of little-known foreigners ...

Surely you cannot be referring to the quite charming and certainly deserving Marion Cotillard. Evidence for the charming part is shown below. You would have to see La Vie En Rose to determine the deserving part.

Saw Enchanted at a dollar movie last week and enjoyed it.

Watched National Treasure on DVD last night and enjoyed it also.

I don’t care how exquistitely crafted, blah, blah, blah, I do not want to see a movie about evil like No Country.

She's French, and that's all you need to know. They're charming one minute, then making anti-American comments to the press the next.

Transformers was cute, but not my idea of a best picture.

Planning to see Golden Compass soon. Have heard the anti-Christian stuff and also the opposite. Some people think Harry Potter is anti Christian.

The FR thread would have been the only reason I would have watched, but I couldn’t find one.

Was there one?

I just don’t care for Jon Stewart. He’s not my cup of tea for humor. I watched a few segments and got bored.

Have to admit I wasnot a huge fan of the Rat movie. We rented it (Netflix) and sent it back after watching 30 minutes. I thought it was boring.

The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003

Wasn't that the year LOTR swept every category it was nominated for?

It’s such a stupid thing and not at all worth watching as a bunch of narrow-minded people congratulate themselves for their morally impaired work.

She’s a good-looking French gal but who’s seen the movie or ever heard of her before? I mean much outside of Paris.

I’ve always been curious to know what those numbers and circles signify, and why an Indian chief? Still wondering.

We can all sigh at James Marsden and Zac Efron.

What? What? Sometimes I wonder if he got his make-up tips from John Travolta! My girls (5 & 6!!!) have really bad crushes on him. They found necklaces at the Disney Store with a "T" dangling from it and won't take them off for anything.

Where do you go to watch the movies?

"I just got greenlit on a project about an unemployed loner who spends all day in his apartment on the phone trying to contact an ex-girlfriend, before he finally gives up and eats a pound of Zoloft. Working title: Democratic Underground."

Don't forget to include the turgid angry rants, the paroxysms of rage about fascists 'Bushitler' and Cheney, followed by endless hours of bored masturbation to the Paris Hilton tape and you'll have a sure prizewinner for a riveting documentary on the cutting edge of leftist activism.

Actually, I thought Enchanted was one that SUCKED bricks. My kids were even more bored than I was.

Enchanted was WAAAAY better than Ratatouille. The music was decent, and the acting was good. It was a bit of a take-off on the old Disney cartoons, and it was classic Disney at the same time. I smiled the whole time. The Rat movie, well, you just can't make a rat cute enough for me to want it in a kitchen.

It’s no different than going to my nephew’s theater on his free passes.

Yes, it is radically different. Theaters give a limited number of free passes, be it to help build word of mouth, as a way of keeping loyal customers, or as it appears in your case, as a gift to family & friends.

I'll try to spell this out in a simple way to you: The key word there is GIVE. It is something that they OWN, so it is theirs to GIVE.

What you are doing is TAKING the movie viewing from the rightful owners, without compensating in whatever way the owners want to be compensated. TAKING something against an OWNER'S permission is STEALING.

And perhaps you can show me the law that says it is illegal to watch? You won’t find it.

The Federal Copyright Act (Public law 94-553, Title 17 of the United States Code). I dare you to go to the FBI and tell them that you think you aren't violating Title 17 by night after night by streaming video - I know people that have been busted by the FBI for video theft.

You want a write up analysis of the law? Look here.

Sorry, not a bit of guilt about it.

Yeah, twisting words to try to make believe that theft isn't theft. Meet your hero, thief:

I didn't get your picture. If it's of Zac Efron, he is the passion of my 10 and 8 year olds. Notice how I said 'we'. That's all three of us.

I'm the James Marsden fan.

Yes, there was an Oscar thread. They put it in general/chat. I came in and only saw the last 10 minutes of the show but read some of the thread.

Guess you missed the part about my buying those tickets and DVDs but that’s okay, rant on.

It was Zac. The girls put up some posters of Zac in their room. When my husband came home he saw the one with the waistband of Zacs underwear showing and told the girls they needed to find another one.

The first movie I saw Marsden in was Superman. I felt bad for him - he lost so graciously to Superman.
