LOS ANGELES The Oscars were a ratings dud. More so than usual, even.
Preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast were 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings were also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.
The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

Actually, I thought Enchanted was one that SUCKED bricks. My kids were even more bored than I was.
Not only Who cares? but I don’t know about any of them.....Broke Butt Mountain sealed the deal.
Go onto the internet and watch them free. No illegal downloads to my house. Just pick a movie and it streams right to your computer.
I’m in the middle of “Vantage Point”. Opened in theaters on Friday.
Before Lent started, we were addicted to the Bennie and the Jets sequence of “27 Dresses” (file #3, at 13:00). If it’s a good movie (like that one) I will pay to see it in a theater. In fact, I did pay to see it. I would actually pay again to see it. And I’ll buy the DVD, but for right now, the internet will do for me.
Well that was when it was more of a private affair for the hollywood community. Now it is a platform for kooks.
LOL
Of the top 5, the only I went out to see, or saw at home for that mater, was the Rat movie.
Enchanted was not really for kids. Although, we were in a theater on opening day, first showing and it was filled with little 3 to 5 year old princesses.
Not a single one was bored and I heard more requests for runs to the Disney Store because, “I want to be Giselle!” sounded all around us as we walked out. Same thing the second time we saw it. Even the last time, about two weeks ago.
The rat movie was deep discounted at Walmart for 16.00 on release. I own all the Pixars and they are NEVER that cheap. I should have known something was up. Just what we need. A Pixar about the Elitist French.
It’s not illegal to watch, just illegal to upload.
Acting awards? I thought it was a fashion show.
I noticed that Transformers was up for sound and visuals.
I laughed since Transformers was pro military and the other runner up was Golden Compass, the anti Christian movie.
The anti Christian movie won best visuals, big shock.
It was a dud too.
The kicker is the movies like Transformers or Spiderman 3 keep hollywood alive, these duds that win oscars don’t.
What’s the point?
The best picture is the one that made over 300 million.
Isn’t that considered great?
I guess I don’t understand the oscars.
Transformers should have won!!!!!!
And Hairspray for make-up.
I’ve never heard of last years “Best Picture!” How cool is that?
Die Hollywood. When you start making patriotic, family friendly pictures again, maybe people notice you again . . .
The best thing about the Oscars was Daniel Day Lewis’s victory and the fact that none of those stupid Hobbit movies were nominated.
Oscars? When was that?
Seriously I had no idea it was even happening... LOL!

I’ve got you beat, I think. I have never even heard of the film that won best picture last year! : )
They were claiming “a billion viewers in 200 countries”. Turns out they had 28.3 million in the US, and of course it was the middle of the night in Europe, Asia and Australia. Ya think they were all glued to the TV at 3.00 AM to watch John Stewart?
I doubt if the total audience was even double the US audience so you could figure around 57 million actually watched. Thats less than 6% of what they claimed.
Al Gore did the same thing with Live Earth - claimed TWO BILLION participated when less than 40 Million did.
The Super Bowl claimed that 900 Million would watch this year -98 Million actually did.
The Rose Bowl Parade claims an attendance of 1 million every year- you can’t fit that many people along the parade route, and if you did they would be shoulder to shoulder 30 rows deep along both sides of the entire route. Real attendance figures are I don’t know the real figure but I bet it is south of 100,000.
The Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix claims 400,000 attendees, the actual attendance last year was between 10,000 - 15,000
These organisations all make their outlandish claims because they think they can’t be challenged. They are just a bunch of liars, and verifying the attendance is a lot easier than they might think, especially when the claims are so absurd.
It would have been funny if Peter O’Toole and Julie Christie won Oscars the same year.
