LOS ANGELES The Oscars were a ratings dud. More so than usual, even.
Preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast were 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings were also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.
The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

Yep, that's what we did at my house.
I'd rather watch a Test Pattern than The Oscars!
look its the show that beats all of PMSNBC.
Since you brought up Star Wars, have you seen this cute video?

Roush, Hendrick, Hendrick !!
The Oscars were on last night?
Could careless about junkies in Hollyweird giving themselves award after award.
Junkies who actually think we care what they think. High School drop outs spewing quotes from move-on.org. Most suffer guilt complexes because they make millions and live the high life for doing nothing more than act like other people.
What a freeking waste of time!I havent watched the AA show since 1972!
No, it is illegal to watch. It's piracy, any way you cut it.
If you don't like Hollywood politics, which most of us don't, then fine, don't buy their product.
But to say that you're "better" than Hollywood, and then go out and steal their product is the height of hypocrisy. And spare me your artificial distinctions of "uploading" vs. "streaming" - the movie is getting to your computer without you paying the asking price. Theft is theft.
I am told that the original script for “Pretty Lady” had the girl as a heroin addict, and was a dark comedy where they split up in the end. Supposedly the original author (who was, of course, well paid for his story) was upset Hollywood made it into a feel good movie. (Same story with Shreck One, I am told.)
You are right, but do you watch them over and over again. If you have any age on you at all. You have seen them all at least twice.
People still love movies, but the only surviving part of the Hollywood social scene lives in those stupid women's magazines where they details red carpet dresses and other nonsense.
If every man in America could get his wife or girlfriend to give up those dumb magazines like Us and People, we could render the Hollywood gossip factor moot, and we wouldn't have to listen to their stupid political beliefs.
Wishful thinking though. I've seen even the most intelligent woman addicted to reading those damn things.
Being a crew person who works live televised events (sports & entertainment), I am familiar with the cost of putting a telecast like this on the air, and my estimate is (conservatively) that this costs the producers at least $250,000.00 based on a three-day window (two setup days and the telecast day). If they used more days for set up, that would add on to the price.
Now, I have no idea what they charge for commercial time (certainly more than the average TV show but nowhere near the Super Bowl), but if they continue to drop year to year in the ratings, they will be hard pressed to make any money by selling time to sponsors.
I'd give it another year before they move to some obscure cable channel like Oxygen.
It’s no different than going to my nephew’s theater on his free passes. Sometimes I pay, sometimes I watch it again on the computer. In the end I buy the DVD. Sorry, not a bit of guilt about it.
And perhaps you can show me the law that says it is illegal to watch? You won’t find it.
bump for later
I only found out this morning when I saw the picture of one of the winners , someone I've never heard of, on the front page of my morning newspaper.
I really lost interest in these movies when these stars got so vocal. They should have just stuck with sex scandals.
Bug eyed Sarandon, nutcase Cruise, bigmouth Roberts (remember what she called Republicans), Katrina fake Penn, the list goes on and on. How can I sit there and watch one of their movies and enjoy it while all the time I am thinking about their socialist, anti american statements.
At least with these series, the actors aren’t such big names, that their stupid statements make headlines.
