Why Are Many Conservatives Leaders Endorsing McCain? (Vanity)
2/5/2008 | Self

Posted on 02/05/2008 5:58:30 AM PST by Obadiah

Serious question. John McCain has a conservative rating of something like 88%. He is a "maverick" who genuinely seems more comfortable working with Democrats. John McCain has dissed conservatives on numerous occasions and authored such abhorent legistaion such as McCain/Feingold. He is for open borders (depending on the day you ask him).

Now, Sam Brownback, Tom Coburn, Phil Gramm, Jack Kemp, Ted Olson, Richard Land, and perhaps Nancy Reagan have either formally endorsed or have voiced support for John McCain? Why are these people endorsing McCain??

Seriously, I cannot grasp this. Why do I have this big disconnect? I do not want John McCain. Why is he being rammed down our throats?

Is it simply "his turn"? Is it because there is no alternative now? Why didn't more people jump on the Fred bandwagon? Do we really want Bob Dole 2.0?

The MSM have had a love afair with McCain as they do with RINOs like Chuck Hagel, Richard Lugar, or any other "Republican" willing to spit on other Republicans. McCain seriously considered switching Parties. McCain was seriously considered as John Kerry's running mate. What's going on?

They are not Conservatives if they are endorsing McCain.

Because being a conservative Republican does not mean that you are a samuri and are required to commit hari kari upon defeat. This is not a political suicide pact, folks.

I would posit that one of the reasons that McCain is so hated ( I would almost put it up there with Bush Derangement Syndrome ) is precisely because he is so close to being someone “conservatives” could support but where he differs from us, he doesn’t mind thumbing his nose at us. That’s just part of his shtick, but I will admit that it does stick in the craw.

The bottom line is that, after all is said and done, the decision is whether or not we can come together and support him if he does get the nomination. I for one, although I will not be voting for him in the primary, could support McCain, should he get the nod.

I haven’t posted for a long time, but this is making me nuts. Politics is the art of the possible. I really get tired of hearing about “sitting it out”, really, I would have thought that Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid would have been enough to get us started toward some cohesion again, but apparently we need Madame President Billary before we can figure out how to support someone who is less than perfect again. Ronald Reagan signed the most liberal abortion law in the country at the time, and, Churchill was a staunch supporter of social welfare laws in Britain; it doesn’t make either one of them any less heroes of the conservative movement.

“I don’t know but because they didn’t, we will get McCain”

He endorsed McCain in 2000 and will endorse him again. I’m surprised he didn’t already.

>>>What the hell are you talking about?

You let your emotions do your reading for you, don’t you? That’s a part of what I was talking about. We see a lot of that lately.

She said she would vote for McCain if he candidate didn’t get the nomination. Not her first choice but she declines to throw childish tantrums or shoot herself in the foot by acting in such a way as to support the dem nominee.

Since I specified IF Romney doesn’t pull it out, no reasonable or even literate person could think I was saying something so dumb as “shut up, sit down, and settle for McCain because he’s your only choice.”

But if Romney doesn’t deliver, and I doubt he will really, then McCain then WILL be the only choice because the primaries will have ended. Then he will be the only option to Hillary or Obama. It’s not rocket science, it’s process of elimination.

And that’s what the hell I’m talking about.

Gosh! But he is SUCH a nice guy! Why ever would they worry?!

THINK ABOUT IT -

All McPain's endorsements come from dinosaurs of the Republican Party. These are the same people that were part of the old machine that gave us the likes of Duke Cunningham's--no one will catch me at it, I'm a Congressmember--mentality. EVERY ONE.

Those that really want Conservative values to be upheld and don't think they "own" the Party, are voting...

ROMNEY!

Tom Coburn is not a RINO. He’s the best conservative in Congress. It is baffling.

then he has become a RINO sorry....can’t be anything else and back McCain and his baggage.

Which, on a decidedly more somber note, is EXACTLY why I am voting and praying today, in the hope that he never does take that oath...

Whoops, I forgot about our state’s “Mrs. Schriever,” but that’s just because he can no longer climb the hill he chooses to die on.

They are supporting McCain because they see the handwriting on the wall inside of the recent polling.

Today is the most important poll about Super Tuesday. Prior polls don’t matter compared with the vote itself.

HOWEVER, as of yesterday McCain was ahead significantly and seemed poised to take anywhere from 750 to a 1000 Delegates

"Why do I have this big disconnect?"

You answered your own question in your first two sentences.  One is a fact, the other is an opinion.

Apparently he isn’t anymore, or else he is looking for mercy.

Neither one. Coburn is an ardent crusader against wasteful spending and earmarks. McCain works with him in stopping it. Sen. Coburn will work with either side to stop wasteful spending.

I am disappointed in his endorsement and don't agree one bit, but if we continue this careless trashing of good conservatives, come the next cycle, we are going to have even less to pick from.

I couldn’t vote for him because of his endorsement but that’s the only mark on his record.
