How many think McCain will simply be this elections Bob Dole? (Vanity)

It has been some time since the 1996 Elections where a Bill Clinton won re-election over Robert Dole. While Dole was a leader in the Senate and in many ways a decent guy he would never have been the first choice of people on the right. However, it seemed that it was "his turn" and that he was somehow owed this opportunity.

He could not have been a more lack luster candidate.

Are we to get the same from McCain? The field of candidates does not impress most on the right...but least of all do I see McCain being the one to sweep us off our feet in any general election.

I view Dole and McCain quite differently.

Besides the obvious differences in policy and temperment, the key difference, in terms of political power, is that McCain has a more keen sense of the power of the leftist propaganda engine than Dole had.

It won't help McCain much -- his policies and temperment are far worse than Dole. Dole was some kind of moderate RINO (I guess, I didn't pay much attention to Dole.) McCain is a backstabbing, arrogant leftist in Republican clothing.

The end result will be the same: another Republican Looser.

All Hale Hillary!

I’m not so sure. McCain looks old and sounds even more old. McCain vs. Obama? To the uneducated voter, which is probably 75%, Obama looks energetic, has an attractive young family, talks a good talk, while McCain is from way back in the Vietnam era. McCain vs. Hillary? To me, it’s 50/50. Neither one have any experience to inspire confidence in handling the economy. It might boil down to whether or not Americans want a woman President. Either way, McCain definitely needs to look for a young, attractive, more conservative running mate.

IF McCain wins, he can try to repair the party by getting a strong conservative to run with him. It didn’t really help Bob Dole though. I still can’t picture 4 to 8 years of the Clintons.

Dole is a real hoot with a wry sense of humor.

God knows what his campaign consultants were telling him to do.

McCain will lose just as badly as Dole did. At least I had respect for Dole. I’d crawl through fire before I vote for McCain.

I agree - The age thing really bothers me. I keep remembering how ancient Dole seemed - so out moded - so yesterday’s news. It was obvious that Dole appealed only to the older generation - the younger folks were no where to be seen at Dole events. And Dole lost.

McCain doesn’t stand a chance. After his buddies in the media turn on him, he’s dog meat.

I live in north Florida and like most here can’t stand McCain. I voted for Romney. That being said, my take on this is that if Romney could only pull in 31% of the vote in a Republican primary here then he would be simply unelectable in the general election if nominated. Given the sorry state W and his past cohorts in Congress have left the Republican party in, McCain is probably the only candidate with an R that could possibly win the general. Very depressing. But anyone here that sits it out in November and forfeits to Hillary or Obama needs a new set of brains.

I don’t. There are major distinctions. Dole was running against an incumbent with a peacetime booming economy. McCain is a better campaigner than Dole - he takes lots of questions, sometimes holding 5 or 6 events a day, with press availibility after every event, and he literally has to be pulled back onto the bus to get him to his next event he is so engaged in campaigning. Dole had a third party with traction siphoning off votes.

Sadly, I’m afraid that all of the Repub. candidates will go like Dole did. This election is going to be between the first Black president or the first female president...PERIOD.

I am hunkering down in preparation for at least four years of leftist rule, whether it be HRC, BHO, or the orney old coot. At some point, Jeb will emerge to restore sanity.

They both are old and cranky men. I’m not sure how a McCain/Clinton election would go. The anger for conservatives toward McCain is unmistakable. If he does get the nomination it would be interesting to see how many conservatives will cast ballots for him or stay home. Millions of pissed off conservatives staying home would spell doom for McCain. I think this time around Conservatives will not choose for the lesser of two evils.
