This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:
"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of Americas industrial base."
"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.
Agree 100%.
I’m guessing this will change the tone of the Re-draft Hunter thread running here...
Sheesh, what a week.
My respect for Cong Hunter has plummeted in 5 seconds.
You could always have said it, you’d just be lying through your teeth like you are now.
Hunter endorses Mike Huckabee the amnesty-supporting, Gitmo-closing, "Bush-is-arrogant" man who scares the pants off of 80% of conservatives ... and you call that "understandable."
Yet Mitt Romney in 1993 utters one little toss-away line about giving everyone equal rights under the US Constitution -- and FR hardliners scream HOMO-LOVER LIBERAL FLIP-FLOPPER LIAR LIAR!!
If it wasn't so sad, it would be laughable.
If Huckabee had half the money of the establishment candidates, the race wouldnt even be close. The GOP is actually raising a lot of money now (Thank you, Mr. President). If Huckabee gets one more momentum shot and win, he will have plenty of money to win in Nov.
-
the problem is that Huck is not a fiscal conservative and he can’t tax us to raise the money this time
Huckabee/Hunter vs., say, Clinton/Obama?
I know who I'd vote for. And I'd do it with a big smile and at least no small measure of confidence in the future. And I mean that.

With statements like that, it’s no wonder that Duncan is, and will remain, a minor political figure.
Do you think that the cross-bookshelf HURT Huckabee? Huckabee was working for the evangelical vote, and the news for two straight days (free press) was that he was so christian that he hid a cross in his advertisement.
That wasn’t a negative, that was free press.
The media is treating Romney’s religion with kid gloves because the media doesn’t think religion should be a factor unless the candidate makes it a factor. Huckabee puts his religion front and center, because it’s what brings out his voters. So the media covers it, just as Huckabee wants.
Huckabee is a very good campaigner. He’s slick. He’s personable. He’s gotten a lot of good media attention. He’s gotten some critical media since he won some elections, and it’s hurt him.
Saddening isn’t it.
Hah ... I DID switch topics on you ... sorry! I saw NRTL and read National Rifle Association ... go figure.
By the way, Charles ... I have always appreciated your posts ... always thoughtful and well-reasoned.
I agree, and such a sentiment is not without historical parallel. Alexander Hamilton decided to follow the same course of action in the election of 1800 rather than support John Adams (who was the McCain moderate of the 1800 Federalists):
"For my individual part, my mind is made up. I will never more be responsible for [Adams] by my direct support--even though the consequence should be the election of Jefferson. If we must have an enemy at the head of the government, let it be one whom we can oppose and for whom we are not responsible."
Alexander Hamilton letter to Speaker of the House Theodore Sedgwick, 1800
If he gets the nomination, I will not vote for him, and for the sake of the GOP, I pray he loses, rather than have a Republican that replaces the worst President of our time, Jimmy Carter.

remember what i said yesterday about Hunter not deserving a pedestal...
This one has no intention of doing so. I know the Huckster too well.
I just saw this (story) on Michelle Malkin’s blog.
You have got to be crappin’ me.
Tancredo’s endorsement of Romney was Einsteinian in comparison with this.
Hunter, you got some splainin’ to do.
It’s the nature of a politician - to compromise with the best he can get. I don’t hold it against him. Hunter has to work with other politicians to get as much done as he can in the future.
This is the reason government is a necessary evil. It’s wise to keep government as small as possible otherwise we compromise ourselves to death.
(I’m not voting for Huckabee though, I’m not a politician, LOL.)
