This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:
"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of Americas industrial base."
"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.
“Well, I was too, but am now going to vote Romney. Don’t ask me why because I really can’t tell you.”
Too funny. I understand where you’re coming from. I feel myself drifting in that direction, but can’t explain the reason either. I think I may decide in the voting booth, which is something I’ve never done before. I may still vote for Fred.
That's my response too.
What a jackass. Protector of the borders, hah!
Ah, you’re just batting a thousand. LOL
The message of the Huckasurge is that a lot of "conservative" Christians aren't so conservative.
Very dispiriting. Where is our George Washington? Is there not one among us?
I’ve never thought of Huckabee as a Marxist. In fact, he IS conservative. But, like Romney, I don’t trust him. He’s gone back and forth on issues, and I just don’t like him. Sorry, basing everything ONLY on the issues and ignoring the “gut feeling” will get you killed in my world. If you don’t listen to your gut feelings, your intuition when something says “don’t do that” then you’re going to wind up in trouble or dead.
That’s the way it has been for me forever.... /shrug
I think people fool themselves here when they discount Huckabee’s electability. He had a mediocre budget and fantastic results in the voting booth. He played the press very well, getting good interviews, quotes, photo ops, and the attack ad played without his specific endorsement.
I believe the press is far more in favor of Mitt Romney, treating his religion with kid-gloves (until the general election), than Huckabee, where a bookshelf made headlines for its shape, and MSM debate questions often focus on difficult questions with Christianity, and there is no focus on difficult questions with Mormonism.
“This can only mean he wants the VP spot.”
Yeah, he can bring 1/100 of 1% of the people who backed him.
>>This is going to make a few heads explode here on FR!<<
I’m just sad about it and I hope it doesn’t lead to personal attack on Duncan Hunter who is a fine man. And I hope it doesn’t keep us from having rational discussions about what to do next.
That’s true. I guess I keep forgetting that while I liked Thompson’s views (and Romneys) on China, they weren’t at all like Hunter’s views. IT was the biggest difference I had with Hunter on a major policy issue.
I was never a Hunter person. I felt he was conservative, but I didn’t seriously consider him, maybe because he never polled high enough for me to care. I did send him money once when pissant was suspended.
At least we still have Dino.
Hunter was never a “conservative” look at his votes on NCLB, Medicare D, Flake Amendments, RSC alternative budget, etc, etc.
Hunter is a corrupt career politician and I am glad I can finally say it here on FR.
WHAT! Tell me it aint so!
So how is Hunter a conservative if he endorses the Huckster, a RINO in RAT clothing? A number of Freepers called Hunter the only conservative in the bunch.
Thanks for the post. That’s great news. Many people who supported Hunter were anti-illegal alien and pro-military. The majority of them will probably volunteer for Huckabee.
Romney has said the same thing about guns, and has it on his web site.
Nobodys talking about Romney for VP.
Why would the next POTUS be interested in a VP position?
Good question, I had the same thoughts about Fred dropping out, but it’s possible there is a lot of backroom discussion going on among the candidates to decide who will be the nominee.
