Should He Stay or Should He Go? (Fred)
The Corner at National Review ^ | January 20, 2008 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

Posted on 01/20/2008 6:57:50 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

An e-mail:

I see that some people (Adler, Geraghty) are calling for Fred to stay in the race. The practical consequence of Thompson's presence so far has been to hand South Carolina to McCain. It's seems unlikely that this dynamic will change in other southern states. All Thompson is managing to do is to split the conservative vote and clear the way for McCain.

Adler also makes the improbable claim that Romney has been revealed as a very weak candidate, even though the information is right there on The Corner that Romney has garnered more votes so far than anyone else in the race.

Lastly, Romney gets slammed for spending money. He is the only candidate running who is attempting to win or place in every state. Giuliani, who also has spent quite a lot, has abandoned most of the country. Fred made a minimal effort outside SC. I half expect a plea for campaign finance reform to follow some of these complaints that Romney is spending too much money. It's very strange.

UPDATE: Another:

Fred is "splitting" the conservative vote with Huckabee. Don't ask me why a conservative would vote for Huckabee, but without Fred, Huckabee would have won S.C. big. If all of Fred's votes had gone to Romney, he still would have been third. Fred should stay in. I'd rather see a brokered convention than Huckabee or McCain as the nominee before then.

I disagree. He snookered the media ROYALLY prior to leaving SC.

After reading many (too many, in fact) of your posts, and reading your profile I have to ask:

Are you a MoveOn plant? What (if any) conservative issues do you actually support? Are you the user otherwise known as ‘Dane’?

"There will be no brokered convention. McCain won SC and will win FL, too. Then, McCain will win NJ and NY and pick up most of CA. This race is over."

If what you say is true, expect one or more third party candidacies. New York Mayor Bloomberg, Congressman Ron Paul and possibly a conservative will almost certainly run against Hillary and McCain.

The last Conservative dropped out yesterday.

Go. It's not going to get any better. Thompson did it to himself by making his formal announcement three months too late. I'm a Giuliani supporter and it looks like my guy will be gone in ten day days too.

Romney is okay by me. I'd rather have Giuiliani or Thompson, but Romney is acceptable. McCain is not. He's an enemy of freedom.

McCain is at the end of his energy and looks as if he is about to collapse. I hear his money is also running out, don’t know if this is true. Rudy also is not doing great. If Huckabee drops out also, Fred will have a real shot.

You are correct. A Fred departure gives a big boost to Huckleberry.

Huckabee's supporters are smoking something of which their churches don't approve if they honestly think Fred supporters will vote for Huckabee. Ain't gonna happen, no way.

I know a lot of evangelicals like myself who support Fred, and not a single one would vote for Huckabee if it came down to Huckabee versus McCain, Rudy or Mitt. Sorry, Hucksters, but your guy is dead in the water if he can't win a state like South Carolina.

Fred has shown he can’t fight the MSM. How would he as POTUS?

Yeah but he was a darn good District Attorney!

“I think if Fred planned on staying in he would have said so. He has to know that by not saying anything about going on to Florida and/or beyond, it would hurt him in fund raising and organization. It also lets all of the news show say he is getting out, which has to have cost him some support.”

I think if Fred planned on getting out he would have said so. He knows that McCain and Huckabee only won in SC with votes from liberals and independents. Now they face only registered Republicans and will fade fast. Rudy hasn’t won anything and he does not have Florida locked up. Florida is still in play for Fred and the debate is Thursday where Fred will shine again! I am with Fred as long as Fred is in the race. GO FRED!

In this case, there's more than one goal, Fred winning it all is a good start, however.

But Fred's influence in this GOP race is very important for conservatives and the country. He's the only one in the race speaking for conservatives and putting forth a bona fide conservative platform. That, alone, is worth our support.

LOL. You are correct. If everyone else drops out of the race, Fred has a shot. LOL

Lets get a grip.

Thompson sounds the best to a lot of us, period. But the fact is that Fred hasn’t been doing a good job campaigning. I don’t know if he is short on money, short on time, or short on ideas, heck maybe he just has a bad campaign manager. Whatever the reason he is doing lousy. He is wonderful but his campaign sucks. He is likely to pull out if he doesn’t do REAL well in Florida. If he gets out and throws in with McCain he will neverhear another good word from me.

Now lets talk about what will be left if Fred leaves, I know you don’t want to but lets just suppose for a minute he decides he is wasting his time. That leaves Rudy, Johnny, Mike and Mitt. Ok, of those four who would you choose? . . . . . . .

Now lets examine again, who is Fred taking votes from now?
I’m not sure I can answer the question, but, no matter how much you hate Romney surely he would be better than the other choices.

The War Secrets Sen. John McCain Hides

But there was one subject that was off-limits, a subject the Arizona senator almost never brings up and has never been open about -- his long-time opposition to releasing documents and information about American prisoners of war in Vietnam and the missing in action who have still not been accounted for. Since McCain himself, a downed Navy pilot, was a prisoner in Hanoi for 5 1/2 years, his staunch resistance to laying open the POW/MIA records has baffled colleagues and others who have followed his career. Critics say his anti-disclosure campaign, in close cooperation with the Pentagon and the intelligence community, has been successful. Literally thousands of documents that would otherwise have been declassified long ago have been legislated into secrecy.

Please stay in Fred. We need you to split votes with Huckabee so that he will be toast.

“That leaves Rudy, Johnny, Mike and Mitt. Ok, of those four who would you choose? . . . . . . .”

I’m voting for Ron Paul in the primary.

He won’t win but consider it a protest vote!

I can’t vote for any of the others - all are big-government hacks.
