An e-mail:
I see that some people (Adler, Geraghty) are calling for Fred to stay in the race. The practical consequence of Thompson's presence so far has been to hand South Carolina to McCain. It's seems unlikely that this dynamic will change in other southern states. All Thompson is managing to do is to split the conservative vote and clear the way for McCain.
Adler also makes the improbable claim that Romney has been revealed as a very weak candidate, even though the information is right there on The Corner that Romney has garnered more votes so far than anyone else in the race.
Lastly, Romney gets slammed for spending money. He is the only candidate running who is attempting to win or place in every state. Giuliani, who also has spent quite a lot, has abandoned most of the country. Fred made a minimal effort outside SC. I half expect a plea for campaign finance reform to follow some of these complaints that Romney is spending too much money. It's very strange.
UPDATE: Another:
Fred is "splitting" the conservative vote with Huckabee. Don't ask me why a conservative would vote for Huckabee, but without Fred, Huckabee would have won S.C. big. If all of Fred's votes had gone to Romney, he still would have been third. Fred should stay in. I'd rather see a brokered convention than Huckabee or McCain as the nominee before then.
I’m sick of Romney supporters (Lopez, Hewitt) stating that Fred should get out.
Maybe Fred can finish pushing through Title X if he gets in!
If you don’t know what it is, look it up and you’ll throw up a little.
At this point , Fred should leave the race. He is only running interference for John McCain at this point.
I think if Fred planned on staying in he would have said so. He has to know that by not saying anything about going on to Florida and/or beyond, it would hurt him in fund raising and organization. It also lets all of the news show say he is getting out, which has to have cost him some support.
Fred should stay and fight on.
Fred08.com has a new homepage photo, with attached paragraphs explaining Fred’s plans to beef up the military.
I think this is a good sign.
He should only leave if it won’t help McCain.
“I think if Fred planned on staying in he would have said so. He has to know that by not saying anything about going on to Florida and/or beyond, it would hurt him in fund raising and organization.”
Ding ding, we have a winner.
Fred will be out after Florida, if not before.
If he can’t win in SC, where can he win?
Rudy will be competing with McCain for the same votes in FL, so the logic that Fred splitting votes with Huck is clearing the way for McCain there is seriously flawed.
Fred’s team is going to need a serious grassroots organization effort to get 2nd in FL. They are going to have to make some changes to make it happen.
What a steaming load of crap.
You are correct. A Fred departure gives a big boost to Huckleberry.
According to the poll on FOX, over 60% say he should stay in. Can’t argue with a poll!
Is that 60% of the New Hampshire voters, or 60% of Michigan?
FRED STAYS.
What other conservative is there, again?
It's not over 'til it's over.
“If he cant win in SC, where can he win?”
In South Carolina many supporters of McCain or Huckabee (or Romney) are strong supporters of Thompson, in fact many say they like Thompson best.
But they havent voted for him because they believe the media hype that Freds campaign has sizzled or that he cant win.
This clarifies the picture somewhat. Thompson’s support is much higher than primary results suggest.
Rudy will be competing with McCain for the same votes in FL, so the logic that Fred splitting votes with Huck is clearing the way for McCain there is seriously flawed.
Rudy will cut into McCain’s support....and Mccain has yet to face any serious Rudy campaigning
Fred IMO should stay in race after Super Tuesday. With the possiblity of this being a brokered convention no candidate should even think of dropping out
Jeez. If Hewitt were cheerleading any harder, he'd need pom poms.
I've given up listening to his show. I don't need a Romney infomercial.
