9 Students Suspended For Videos Making Fun Of School Videos Were Posted On YouTube

GREEN, Ohio -- Nine Green High School boys in Summit County were suspended for 10 days.
They are accused of producing videos that made fun of staff and students, NewsChannel5 reported.
Administrators said the group then put them on YouTube. The videos have been removed from the Web site.
Principal Gary Geis said the videos poked fun at teachers and classmates.
The students' identities weren't released.
Its a hard call while on paper there is no doubt that the kids were within their rights (assuming no school equipment) these were high school students. They are soon to enter a world where such behavior would get you fired (assuming they are in a right to work state and are not union) maybe they need a taste of real life.
That being said the first thing the school should have done is asked them to take it down and warned them a repeat could mean a suspension.
Not hardly. It’s a sign of bullying. How do you think the fellow students who were the targets of the video are going to react? “Oh that’s a good one, you got me. Ha ha ha”? I doubt it.
Again, what would the reaction be if this video later came out after a horrible incident occurred? I’m sure YOU would be the 1st to criticize the school for NOT doing anything. In your eyes, the school can do NOTHING right. They lose either way. IN THIS CASE, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that the video went too far when it targeted other students. I’m sure they didn’t pick on the captain of the football team who has everything going for him in life.

Because you totally discount the possible repercussions of such a video. You ASSUME the video is benign, and base your opinion accordingly. You do not allow an alternative explanation for such harsh reaction from the school, thus you don’t allow for the possibility that the school got it right.
And you ASSUME that it is NOT benign.
This horse has been beaten to death. Plenty of posters have stated that it depends on what the ACTUAL content of the video was, to decide if appropriate action was taken.
That said, I do find that the schools tend to have WAY to much of the opinion that the school itself is “theirs,” not the public or anyone else who paid for it. And get way too high and mighty about it. Typical marxists.

Yeah, Marxist, you really figured me out alright. My comment was really based off of all those crying foul over this without knowledge of the contents. Yet you seem to be A-OK with those unfounded criticisms. No shocker there, because your mind is made up already.

Someone made a video as a fun joke. They get suspended.
Meanwhile it’s OK for teens to have sex under the bleachers.
Depends on the school system I would guess. My child did a project in middle school showing the effects of different caliber bullets on various targets. Won a prize for it in the school science fair too. She also made a musical instrument out of different shell casings. It actually worked which was my surprise. But repercussions from the school? Other than an A on each project, none.
The students had no choice, Antioch’s shut down....(chuckle)
Glad you have rational schools. One near where I grew up, in nice sane suburban PA, suspended a six year old boy for a plastic fireman’s axe that was part of his Halloween costume. That was my introduction to “zero tolerance” and I’ve kept an eye out on those stories since. There’s a lot of zero tolerance nonsense out there and it’s getting worse.

It's good for schools to prevent bullying, but only within the proper sphere of authority they have as a school. Just because an action may affect students of a school does not give the school the authority to regulate (or punish) that action.
I believe that a video made outside of school, during a student's free time, is outside of the authority of the school to punish. If a student is making fun of another student in the hallway or at a school-sponsored sporting event, that's one thing. But what students do in their own time and on their own property is their own business, or the business of their parents.
If the school did nothing, and a student did take revenge as a consequence of this video, I would not blame the school. Likewise, if the popular kids decided to hold a weekend party and didn't invite the "losers"- and the school knew about it- I wouldn't expect any action on the part of the school. Students should be allowed to speak, associate, and act as they please outside of school, within the confines set by their family and the law. When they act inappropriately outside of school, then the matter is properly handled by the family, church, police, or courts...not the school.
Taken to its logical and realistic conclusions, your position would authorize a school to get involved with a wide variety of the private actions of students and families.
We sang and did all these things and we turned out okay....oh, that's right, the lefties that have way too much power in the schools don't think we did.
