The half ton mum: Tragic story of world's heaviest woman
The Daily Mail (UK) ^ | December 30, 2007 | TAMARA HARDINGHAM-GI

Renee Williams became the largest person ever to have gastric bypass surgery earlier this year after ballooning to nearly seventy stone – but died 12 days later.

The bedridden 29-year-old begged doctors to perform the operation when she became so large that she couldn't hug her two children.

Her astonishing size meant that the operating table had to be specially widened for the procedure.

The operation was successful and Renee lost four stone due to her reduced stomach capacity before dying of a sudden heart attack less than two weeks later. Her story is told in a Channel 4 programme next week.

Renee, from Austin, Texas, had battled with her weight since childhood and was classified as super-morbidly obese at the age of 12.

Wow. My grandmother is now dying because of the very same thing. She has lymphoedema (legs) and recently contracted an infection and cellulitis in her legs. She’s at First Health in Pinehurst NC right now on her death bed as her infection can no longer be controlled and gangrene has “set” in. Her dr also believes she may be suffering from a cancer common to those with lymphoedema; lymphangiosarcoma, but it’s rarely caught in time to treat and it metasticizes very very quickly. It’s only a matter of hours or days before she succumbs to her condition and her pain is beyond manageable. Nothing is helping...not morphine, dilaudid, nothing. I had to leave to come home for a while as it is agony watching her suffer so. It’s just odd to read this while having a family member literally dying from the same thing as your neighbor.

There was one documentary about one guy who was superobese - even when his family didn’t feed him enormous meals, he would call to a restaurant for food when they weren’t in, go to the window of his several-story high apartment and lower money in a bucket to the delivery guy. Then he’d lift the bucket and up would come the food.

This is a great thread to motivate new years’ resolutions, though!

I am always amazed at people who cannot understand how a person gains so much weight..... energy in + no energy output = stored energy (aka fat).

Being morbidly obese is an extreme mental illness.

I had to help remove a 800 pound man once who died in his bed. It was sickening to see (and smell) the horrible conditions a person like that lives in. We had to knock out two walls to remove his body. The floor had rotted out underneath the bed in places from human waste.

Stories like this are sad but think about the cost to her children and its even more tragic. I dealt with a few families that were all morbidly obese and it seems to be a continuing cycle in many cases.

It’s bad for society as well since they are usually declared disabled so the gov’t (read taxpayers) takes care of them.

I hope and pray her children break the cycle.

I remember from my military days gaining good weight in training and bad weight in Germany as well.

The beer really is much better over there is’nt it?

:)

Thanks for your service!

EXACTLY! What I don’t understand about all these stories is. . .who is bringing them the food?

They can’t get up! Someone is delivering!

Re: calling the delivery people, if it was my relative, I’d take out the phone and nail the window shut.

What’s the immobile person going to do about it? They’d eat only what I gave them until they were at least able to get up!

Call it tough love. I would not tolerate that sort of behavior from a loved one of mine.

EXACTLY! While I feel horrible for this woman's plight, being one who's ridden himself of almost 100 lbs of fat, I can attest to the fact that learning HOW to eat properly is the first step in a long fight.

When I started my weight loss efforts in Nov. 06, I had to re-learn how to eat. I started incorporating large breakfasts, lean snacks and hefty salads into my diet to teach my body how to be full without being filled. It's amazing what protein and fiber can do to fill up the belly!

If you're relying on sugar, garbage carbs (HFCS, white anything, etc.) as sustenance, your body is telling you something every time you feel bloated or otherwise stuffed. There's nothing better than watching your body change shape in the mirror day by day as you drop those pounds because you chose a steak and vegetables versus the standard pasta fare at the local diner.

This woman is yet another victim of the instant gratification crowd. If she'd learned to eat slow and proper, she might still be alive today. 8 burgers in a sitting is obscene!

I'm so sorry to hear that. I was on morphine when I was in the hospital a few years ago - that stuff could knock out an elephant. It's sad to see that her pain is so great that even that no longer works.

I pray that her suffering won't last too long.

Someone who is that pathologically addicted to food, coupled with people around her who MUST be enabling her, is not going to benefit from gastric bypass anyway. I have an old friend who had gastric bypass and she is fatter today than she was before the procedure. She was about 400 pounds, lost 50-75, then gained it all back plus more. It was lots of milkshakes and relatives whose relationship with her revolved around food and eating. Eventually the stomach stretches back out after this procedure if you aren’t willing to put the hard work in.

Most people in this condition have genetic factors that make them that way. Hopefully, research will find a cure or treatment soon. And for the people who no sympathy, you should be thankful you don’t have the condition.

Any documentaries I’ve seen about the morbidly obsese generally hints heavily at a spouse or family enabling them.

My sister is over 400 lbs. She can no longer do things like tie her own shoes. She is on SSI for a number of reasons. The government (aka taxpayer) pays for her enablers. She gets an "aide" to help her with tasks at home and grocery shopping.

I have met women that get depressed and then pound down the ice cream as if to say "since I'm undesireable, I'm going to make myself fat to advertise how undesireable I am."

Depression can be a part of it. People who are depressed should look into cognitive therapy. It's been around for almost 50 years and its effectiveness keeps getting confirmed in study after study. It works without drugs, works faster than drugs, and can be done on a self help basis.

My prayers for your grandmother, and you and your family, that she may find release and peace soon, and an end to her suffering. My grandmother died many years ago in a similar way and it was very difficult for us all, but most of all her.

May your grandmother's pain be eased, and she soon go to her God in peace.

I quit smoking 18 months ago, and have gained FIFTY pounds, despite trying to restrict my food intake.

EVERYTHING the anti-smoking folks tell you about the after-effects of quitting other than the weight gain is a FLAT OUT TOTAL AND UNEQUIVOCAL LIE!!

Everything tastes like CRAP, my smeller is no more sensitive, and the 4-5 hundred bucks (1 1/2 to 3 packs daily) is NOWHERE to be found.

I have found (that isn’t mentioned) that I DO drink more. With the idiocy I find, it’s small wonder, but still...

What I mean is that once she reached a certain weight, and was not able to get her own food, the people she relied upon should have just about made her starve, and get professional help. I understand she had problems, yet people shouldn't have let her get like that. I mean, she obviously had a problem.

I've heard of people who are constantly hungry, no matter how much they eat. Those are people who need assistance. And accountability.
