Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been critically injured after a suspected suicide attack at a political rally in Pakistan.

It was believed to be a suicide attackShe is undergoing emergency surgery at a nearby hospital, Sky News sources say.

The explosion went off just after Ms Bhutto left the rally in Rawalpindi, minutes after her speech to thousands of people.

I think the theocracies are trying to surpass the cruelty of the communist regimes you cite. I fully agree with your point and it actually supports the danger of growing islamic fundamentalism, which has a stated aim of “convert or die,” i.e., wipe out the infidel. Some think they only hate Jews and would be content to wipe out Israel. WRONG. It’s the U.S. and freedom they are after.

One can only assume that the upcoming Parliamentary elections will be delayed.

Bhutto was a very brave woman, and she damn well knew that this was very likely to happen.

I think she reconciled herself as becoming a martyr before she ever set foot back into Pakistan. She acted like it from the beginning, and I think she knew exactly what she was doing.

Time will tell us how this event will change or not change the political dynamics, but if I had to venture a prediction, I would think that this will bring together various moderate factions to defeat the Islamic Conservative radicals and help to push them back into the shadows in time. This will allow the moderates to achieve better control politically.

One can only hope that is the case.

Let us not jump to conclusions. Snarlin’ Arlen might determine, later, that it was “magic shrapnel”. Expect the Taliban and A-Q to concentrate on Pakistan and go after the nukes. This is truly scary.

I do not see how these weapons can be kept from that grasp without physical intervention by the United States, including a large number of boots on the ground.

I tend to think those boots will hve green berets on their heads. I think it would be a secret operation (or as secret as you can get). I don't envision regular troops in Pakistan unless there is a total collapse of the situation. Right now, the situation is unclear, but there is great potential for it to get a whole lot worse very quickly.

If it was the same one, a white one, that I saw on a clip this morning, it appeared to me to be lightly armored with some tinted thicker glass installed on the rear passenger compartment, but the doors did not appear to be armored as some others that I have seen. If they were, it was very lightly armored.
