Moslem countries can’t be ruled democratically as in the US or the West. Turkey is a slight exception, the army is preserving the democracy there by the force of arms, if necessary, hardly our type of democracy.

That said, Musharraf is our ally and can’t agree with the Islamofascists, mainly AQ/Taliban. He couldn’t live with them even by withdrawing his troops from NW pakistan. There were 9 assassination attempts against him BEFORE AND AFTER this “accomodation.

Musharraf WAS the President and the head of the army untill we put pressure on him to lose his uniform to accomodate BB to be a democratic Prime Minister. Our people don’t understand my first paragraph. They still want “democracy” in a place that can’t ACCEPT IT!

Enters BB, she returned to Pakistan from exile. Musharraf put her under house arrest after the first carbomb hit her motorcade going home from the airport. She servived but hundreds were killed and injured. Musharraf declared martial law and suspended the coming elections. Musharraf was pressured AGAIN by US for, yes again, DEMOCRACY!

He ended martial law and announced January 8 as the date for elections and took off his uniform!

Enters AQ/Taliban successful assassination of BB today.

I believe, martial law will be invoked, elections will be cancelled and there will be no democracy, HOPEFULLY!

It’s the only way to keep a tight hand on the nukes and go after AQ/Taliban in the mountains, maybe with our help and no more DEMANDS for democracy!

I hope that sums it up for you.

Can her husband run in her place on the ballot?
Short term this can hurt Pak, but her martryrship will only hurt AQ as anger turns to them.

They freaking LIVE in Pakistan.

Wasn’t Huckabee recently ridiculed by Hugh Hewitt for saying what you’ve just written?

Sorry, off-topic, but it just came to mind....

Maybe that is why he had her on house arrest, for her own safety.

Concur on the tactics; never say never on how people can be manipulated and influenced — most likely AQ, but we’ll wait and see (earlier posts w/links say official AQ spokesperson already claimed credit).

If AQ is claiming credit, Musharraf needs to regain control of his country. He can’t be criticized for doing this on behalf f the US gov now, as these attacks directly opposed the will of at least a significant majority of the Pakistani people. He needs to clean FATA out, arresting or killing Taliban and AQ. He needs to cut some alliances and build new ones. He’s on a downhill slope if he doesn’t act now, not to mention his credibility’s shot to hell.

I haven’t read the entire thread, but saw a salute to her as a brave human being in the first 50 posts. She was brave beyond our comprehension, as the Pakistanis struggle to achieve even a modicum of the freedom and peace that we enjoy.

For the short-term: Martial law + riots + suspending election = crap meet fan.

Long-term: This will make Pakistan unstable, but a 1914 scenario is highly unlikely. It was a tangled web of alliances which ultimately caused WWI to start. This situation is not comparable. Biggest risk is if Mush is viewed by the people of Pakistan as the reason for it. IF Mush can use this to cramp down on the extremist elements (which he has already in the past year) and properly honors her legacy this MAY be a good thing for Pakistan. For the majority of people there who looked up to her, if Al-Qaeda is responsible they just really pissed off a good portion of the country.

The ones in Afghanistan have been chased into Pakistan. So have the ones who recently left Iraq, so yes they have been chased to Pak. The mountains in North Pak are impenetrable.

You said — “Musharraf was pressured AGAIN by US for, yes again, DEMOCRACY!”

Rather than Musharaff being “responsible” for the assassination of Bhutto, one could say that it was the United States (the government pressure put on Musharaff) who is responsible for the assassination for Bhutto.

And Hugh Hewitt lambasted Huckabee for saying just that a week or two ago.

Let's face it Musharraf is doing good retain control of the military, he has never been able to prevent attempts on his own life so I don't know what makes anyone think he would be able to prevent attempts on the lives of opposition party members.

What a difference in the reaction to this from our potential leaders. Hillary, McCain, Rudy, and Obama is who I have seen and the difference in reaction is stark.
