CNN: "Female Security Guard Hailed as Hero"... "saved 'hundreds of lives'"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- A Colorado Springs megachurch instituted security precautions after a shooting at a Denver area mission center earlier Sunday, saving "hundreds of lives" at the New Life Church, senior Pastor Brady Boyd said Monday.

A New Life parishioner acting as a security guard shot and killed a gunman who entered the church Sunday afternoon after he had gotten no more than 50 feet inside the building, Boyd said.

...

Boyd said the female security guard was a hero in preventing further bloodshed, rushing to confront the gunman just inside the church.

"She probably saved over a hundred lives," Boyd said of the guard, whom he said is not a law enforcement officer and used her personal weapon.

...

"Hundreds of lives were saved yesterday because of the plan that was put in place," said Boyd, who put the number of people on the church campus at the time as 7,000.

Like many other words and phrases in our country, hero is losing some of its meaning by excessive usage.

How many gun fights have you been in?

t took a steely nerves for the unarmed rusher to do his mission, which was literally to draw attention (and fire) and thus allow the armed lady to take her shots.

Particularly after two armed "guards" had already failed to rise to the challenge...

"No greater love," indeed.

That is HYSTERICAL! Did he start glancing nervously upward looking for the thunderbolt?

The funniest thing that happened to hubby and the boys was when the loons from "Integrity" showed up all dressed in identical black and looking for trouble. They got an effusive welcome from the team, who persisted in believing that they were a delegation from the Armenian Orthodox Church (they suspected they were being laughed at but weren't sure.) But no thunderbolts, not even a drop of rain.

What I understood from an earlier interview with the unarmed rusher is that he made a vow after Columbine that he would run towards the trouble, not away, and do what he could to stop the attack even if he got shot.

So he did, and he did. Brave man. Hopefully it's not a serious wound, but it is a most honorable scar in any case.

"Did he start glancing nervously upward looking for the thunderbolt?"

Actually, he did calm down but we were heckling him now. We were just saying truthful things like, "Wow, I've never seen it rain on a clear day!", and "Hey, that's a sign from God... you better repent before the lighting pops you!" And we were warning each other loudly to, "Stay Back, Stay Back... God is gonna strike him".

I hope he did repent. Funny thing happened when his friends finally got thrown out to join him in the parking lot. They were running their mouths like little ACLU lawyers and I could see that they were expecting him to join in, but he was just dripping wet and headed for the drivers door. They loaded up and as he left, his last verbal barbs were something like, "God-Free! God-Free!" while holding up a pinkie/forefinger "horns" symbol so many concert go-ers use. I could see the curious look of his friends and I'm sure they were thinking, "why are you wet?"... I wonder what he told them. LOL!

“Awesome! This is why Jesus told us to keep “swords” (Luke 22:36).” That passage always confused me. When the disciples say “here are two”, Jesus says: “that is enough”. I realize He means “sufficient”, but it reads like He’s telling them: “stop that”.

On the news tonight, they said the woman was a volunteer, not a hired guard.

“FABULOUS job by this FEMALE ARMED CIVILIAN, credited by the pastor with probably saving over a hundred lives.”

I agree.

We are under siege. We have been for some time by the crimina...’scuse me...”VICTIMS”of society. Time to call out the militia. We citizens should be armed and it should be our prime directive to make this a polite society.

This sounds like a joke, but I AIN’T kiddin’.

Maybe an angel emptied a chamberpot . . . ? < g >

Hopefully the experience did start him thinking, and maybe led to repentance and reform. We can hope and pray . . .

Her involvement will be spun as “armed guard” instead of “RKBA-exercising parishioner”.

She is an armed guard -- an official member of the church's security staff. They're volunteers -- but she's a guard, and she did her job. Heroically, as it happens.

She's cute too:

Golly! Sure she’s not a Marine?

She talks like she is or was military: "I took cover. I identified myself. I engaged him. I took him down," the 42-year-old former law officer and volunteer church security guard said Monday at a news conference in the Colorado Springs police station."

Question to military and LEOs here: is it usual for people outside the military to use the term "engage" in this context?

As a footnote, she said to ABC: "I am not married yet. I will someday. God's going to find me the perfect man," she said.

As a side note, while reading through this thread it occurred to me that there's another fine lady who's probably smiling about this tonight, albeit with grim satisfaction tinged with sadness. She has to be pleased that the hard lessons she has devoted her life to teaching have been learned by at least some.

Her name is Suzanna Gratia Hupp. Lest we forget...

Amen.

And thanks for the pings earlier folks... just catching up now.

Having no experience in this field, they tell me nothing increases the stress of shooting civilians like having them shoot back at you ;o)

The perp’s mission was terminated. I think the frequency these kind of “killing sprees”, would diminish I the potential killers know that they would not end their planed scenario under their on terms.

Stephen King is pretty skillful at revealing the precious currents which exist in American culture. Enlightened warriorship is one. This woman is an example of how love can work to protect others. And notice how she says it was not her. But it was her, and she got the strength and confidence from upstairs.

Good News: " We are not alone!"

But we cannot connect unless we ask with every fibre of our being, often that kind of situation is created for us. And we tend to forget that. That is another lesson this woman has to teach us.

That is a very important message these days. Which is why the MSM has buried this story. That is where we come in. (Grin)

Amen to that, I hope this thread gets bumped past 5,000 posts!

I only hope we do not have any mis-guided heroes in the future, just maybe too much media would be bad, she knows she did right, we know it and thats all that matters.
Hopefully a freeper can get an interview with her so she can post about herself here.
