“Musharraf frees political prisoners”
Bruce Loudon, South Asia correspondent | November 21, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “They said the suicide bomber tried repeatedly to carry the baby to Ms Bhutto’s vehicle as she drove in a late-night cavalcade through the streets of Karachi.
“At the point where the bombs exploded, Benazir Bhutto herself saw the man with the child and asked him to come closer so that she could hug or kiss the infant,” investigators were reported as saying. “But someone came in between and a guard felt that the man with the child was not behaving normally. So the child was not allowed to come aboard Benazir’s vehicle.””

Michigan Woman Sentenced for Her Role in Smuggling Scores of Iraqis and Jordanians into the United States
WASHINGTON Neeran H. Zaia, 56, of Sterling Heights, Mich., was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her role in a conspiracy to smuggle Iraqis and Jordanians into the United States and for bringing and attempting to bring Iraqis and Jordanians to the United States for the purpose of private financial gain, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor of the District of Columbia announced.
Zaia was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Judge Collyer also sentenced Zaia to 10 years of supervised release.
Zaia pleaded guilty on Sept. 6, 2007, and admitted that she accepted payment from Iraqi and Jordanian migrants to transport them to South America, where she facilitated arrangements with other smugglers associated with the conspiracy. Those persons, in turn, brought or attempted to bring the migrants to the United States. On Aug. 3, 2007, Zaias husband, Thaer Omran Ismail Asaifi, was sentenced by Judge Collyer to 72 months in prison for his role in the conspiracy and for alien smuggling.
Zaia was previously convicted on three counts of bribery, seven counts of visa fraud and one count of alien smuggling in the Eastern District of Michigan in 1992.
The charges arise from an extraterritorial undercover investigation initiated and led by the Washington Field Office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with the substantial assistance of personnel and resources from ICE’s Detroit Office; the Peruvian National Police, and Peruvian Immigration authorities. The State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service also assisted with the investigation.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce R. Hegyi of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, and by Trial Attorneys Jim Oliver of the Civil Rights Division and Pragna Soni, for the Domestic Security Section of the Criminal Division.

MS-13 Member Sentenced to More Than 19 Years in Prison for Involvement in a Racketeering Conspiracy
WASHINGTON A member of La Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, has been sentenced to 235 months in prison for his participation in a racketeering enterprise, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Edward M. Yarbrough of the Middle District of Tennessee announced today.
Geovanni Pena, a.k.a. Rata, was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge Todd J. Campbell of the Middle District of Tennessee in Nashville. Judge Campbell also ordered Pena to serve three years of supervised release.
At his plea hearing on Sept. 6, 2007, Pena admitted that he and others involved in the MS-13 gang conspired to participate in a pattern of racketeering activity in the Nashville metropolitan area, which included murder and attempted murder. In addition, Pena admitted that on September 3, 2006, as part of his membership in MS-13, he fired a handgun into a crowd of people outside Club Coco Loco in metropolitan Nashville and shot and wounded two men. Pena had believed that people in the crowd were members of the rival street gang Brown Pride. Pena also admitted that on Sept. 4, 2006, at Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, he shot a man several times in the back because he believed the man to be a member of the rival street gang 18th Street.
Pena is the first defendant to be sentenced on the RICO indictment returned by a federal grand jury on Jan. 10, 2007. That indictment charges 14 members of MS-13 with conspiring to participate in the affairs of a racketeering enterprise and related charges including murder, attempted murder, assault, weapons charges, and obstruction of justice. Of the 14 defendants originally charged in the indictment, seven have pleaded guilty to racketeering offenses. Trial for the remaining seven defendants is currently scheduled for April 8, 2008.
The MS-13 street gang is a violent international criminal organization composed primarily of immigrants or descendants of immigrants from El Salvador. The purpose of the racketeering enterprise was to preserve and protect the power, territory, and profits of the MS-13 enterprise through violent assault, murder, threats of violence, and intimidation.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jimmie Lynn Ramsaur of the Middle District of Tennessee and Department of Justice Trial Attorneys David Jaffe and John Han from the Criminal Divisions Gang Squad.
This case was investigated by the Nashville Metropolitan Police Departments Gang Suppression Unit, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Department of Homeland Security, the Davidson County District Attorney Generals Office, the U.S. Attorneys Office in the Middle District of Tennessee, and the Gang Squad at the Department of Justice.

MAN CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTING TO
PROVIDE MATERIAL SUPPORT TO AL-QAEDA SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS IMPRISONMENT
Martin C. Carlson, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, and J P Weis, Special Agent in Charge, Philadelphia Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that Michael Curtis Reynolds, age 49, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Edwin M. Kosik to a 30-year term of imprisonment for attempting to provide material support to Al-Qaeda and related charges. On July 13, 2007, a federal jury returned the guilty verdicts on the charges after about an hour of deliberation.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Carlson, the evidence at trial established that starting in October 2005, Michael Curtis Reynolds began an attempt to aid a foreign terrorist organization—Al-Qaeda. Reynolds’ plan was to help Al-Qaeda units that he believed existed in Canada and this country to make an attempt to destroy fuel pipelines servicing the United States. He was motivated to solicit and assist in this proposed attack because he disagreed with war in Iraq, was angered by the revocation of his passport while he was in Thailand, and by his own personal greed.
Fortunately Reynolds’ plan was reported to the FBI just as it was beginning. From that point, a cooperating witness and later an FBI Special Agent posing as an Al-Qaeda terrorist communicated with Reynolds over the Internet about his scheme. Posing as that terrorist, for approximately a month they discussed with Reynolds his targets and other details of his plan. This communication over the Internet involved more than 50 messages and lasted until December 5, 2005, when FBI Special Agents arrested Reynolds at a desolate rest stop near Pocatello, Idaho, commonly known in the area as Hell’s Half Acre. Reynolds was arrested when he arrived to pick up what he believed would be $40,000, which was partial payment for his services and future services to the Al-Qaeda terrorists. The evidence at trial also established that Reynolds possessed an unregistered grenade within his storage locker in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Reynolds was convicted of attempting to provide material support to Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization; attempting to provide material support and resources to be used in maliciously damaging or destroying property by means of force or explosive; soliciting others to engage in a felony using physical force against property; distributing over the Internet information to be used in furtherance of a crime of violence; and possession of an unregistered grenade. The jury acquitted him of another unregistered-grenade charge.
Mr. Carlson stated, Since September 11, 2001, the first priority of all law enforcement agencies has been to prevent future acts of terror in our homeland. Todays sentencing constitutes a triumph of the rule of law over those who would use terror against this nation. Because of the astute work of the FBI, and the hard work of Assistant U.S. Attorney Gurganus, a plot by a would-be Al-Qaeda sympathizer was uncovered, and successfully prosecuted. Todays sentence sends a clear message: Individuals such as Reynolds, who operate outside the law to impose terror represent a threat to our safety. Such would-be terrorists will be dealt with severely under our system of laws. I commend the FBI and everyone involved in the prosecution of this case for bringing him to justice.
Reynolds is presently imprisoned at the Lackawanna County Jail in Scranton, Pennsylvania, pending his designation to a federal correctional facility by the United States Bureau of Prisons.
This case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus.

“Papers consider data records loss”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”Someone gave a disc containing confidential information about 25 million people to a bloke on a bike? And he lost it?”
Alice Miles, writing in the Times, sums up the outrage and disbelief over the security breach at Revenue and Customs.
The Daily Mail says it is a case of “sheer, mind-blowing incompetence and stupidity... in a class of its own”.
The Daily Telegraph describes it as “the mother of all starter-kits for identity thieves”.
Urgent checks
The Guardian says the loss of 25 million personal records is “the most fundamental breach of faith between the state and citizen”.
The paper describes how MPs gasped when Chancellor Alistair Darling told the Commons about the blunder.
The Independent says seven million families are having to make urgent checks on their bank accounts.
The prime minister and his “embattled” chancellor were counting the cost to their reputations, the paper adds.”

33 YEARS JAIL FOR BOMBER WHO LOST HIS NERVE AT LAST MINUTE

33 YEARS JAIL FOR BOMBER WHO LOST HIS NERVE AT LAST MINUTE
THE fifth failed July 21 suicide bomber was jailed for 33 years yesterday and will be booted out of Britain once he is free.
Manfo Asiedu, 34, joined the gang of would-be mass murderers setting out to attack Londons transport network with rucksack bombs.
But then he lost his nerve and dumped his device before fleeing.
His bomb was made of chapati flour and liquid peroxide, inside a plastic container with screws and washers taped to the side.
It was to be set off by a detonator made of a cardboard tube, containing an explosive, and a torch bulb attached to a battery.
The bomb was found near Wormwood Scrubs prison, in west London.
The devices carried by the other four suicide bombers failed to explode and they were caught after a huge investigation by Scotland Yard.

Intelligence official: ‘FBI might as well put out a sign Double agents wanted’”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Investigators say Tehseen, a “very devout” Muslim who wears a hijab, was really acting as a conduit for money funneled to bin Laden from the Missouri-based Islamic American Relief Agency, which the Treasury Department has blacklisted for helping fund bin Laden’s operations overseas. Treasury has frozen IARA’s assets, and the FBI has conducted raids on its offices.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In 2004, federal agents arrested Tehseen as she was preparing to board a flight to Pakistan on behalf of her charity. They raided her half-million-dollar home in a leafy subdivision in Fairfax, Va. located not far from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ home where they executed a search warrant for all documents and other items related to her charity.
Tehseen later pleaded guilty to federal charges of fraud, and was deported to Pakistan. Sources say her husband is now working for the Pakistani government in Islamabad.
It’s not clear if Tehseen, 49, stole classified information for al-Qaida, but investigators suspect espionage is probable, as she produced highly sensitive health-hazard documents for toxic compounds and chemical pesticides. Tehseen also was an expert in parasitology as it relates to public water systems, a terror target of al-Qaida.
“She’s a classic example of an al-Qaida sympathizer who infiltrated our government and our society, and worked and lived among us for years and years, and even started a family here,” the agent said of Tehseen, who had a fourth child while living in America for 17 years.”
