Friday, November 9, 2007
Rossford police are continuing this morning to investigate a suspicious vehicle found yesterday containing several containers of flammable liquid and other dangerous devices, authorities said.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Meijer store on U.S. 20 about 4:40 p.m. and found at least five containers of flammable liquid, unknown materials in plastic containers, and several incendiary devices, authorities said.
Toledos bomb squad and the Rossford fire department assisted police in securing the vehicle and removing items for analysis, authorities said. The driver of the vehicle, a Rossford man, was taken to the police department last night to be interviewed. No charges have been filed this morning, authorities said.

Nuke ops man shot during gang raid
8 November 2007
A senior Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (Necsa) employee was shot during an attack at Pelindaba.
It remains unknown how exactly three armed men gained entry to the national key point in the early hours of Thursday morning. It is believed that the three, once inside the facility, used a ladder stolen from the nuclear facility's fire department to scale a wall and so get into the control room.
It is suspected that Necsa Emergency Services operational officer Anton Gerber was shot when he surprised the men. Gerber was rushed to Eugene Marais Hospital where he is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
The shooting of Gerber comes four months after Necsa's newly appointed services general manager, Eric Lerata, 43, was gunned down in cold blood in outside his Montana home after returning from a week-long business trip in France. In a bizarre twist, two of Lerata's alleged killers, who were out on bail at the time of his killing, were arrested on murder charges on Wednesday while appearing at the Kempton magistrate's court in connection with a case of theft. Necsa spokesperson Chantal Janneker confirmed the attack on Gerber but declined to say where in the facility the shooting took place or if the gunmen had taken anything. She said that no one else was injured in the attack. "Once we have a report, we will reveal exactly what happened," said Janneker.

“Screeners Find Gun Parts Hidden in Laptops at JFK”
By Annie Jacobsen in category Airport Security & Screening
Maldives police said 10 suspects in a bomb attack on international tourists in September fled to Pakistan and the Indian Ocean island nation is seeking Interpol's assistance to detain the fugitives.
The two prime suspects, Abdul Latheef Ibrahim and Ali Shameem, escaped the Maldives with the assistance of an immigration officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz said. Another eight entered Pakistan through Karachi before the Sept. 29 blast in the capital, Male, he said. The suspects targeted non-Muslims to fulfill their ``jihad,'' or holy war, Riyaz said, in a statement on the Maldives Police Service Web site.
Several of the fugitives and people already detained in connection with the attack received training in bomb making at Pakistani madrassas, or religious schools, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported. The Maldives, a chain of 1,190 islands located southwest of India, is made up almost entirely of Sunni Muslims, according to U.S. government data.

Yep, you’re welcome.
TEHRAN - Iran on Thursday denounced Interpol's decision to issue wanted notices for five Iranians for involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre in Argentina in which 85 people were killed.
The world police body's annual general assembly on Wednesday voted to issue the "Red Notices" seeking the extradition of the Iranians and one Lebanese national in connection with the bombing. Iran has repeatedly denied any link to the attack and blames the United States and Israel for trying to implicate it. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Interpol's move was "strongly condemned by Iran and it was an unprincipled measure."

Troops Target Foreign Terrorist Networks in Iraq; 19 Suspects Detained
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2007 Coalition forces wounded one suspected terrorist and detained 19 others today during operations to disrupt foreign terrorist networks in central Iraq.
— Southeast of Fallujah, coalition forces targeted an associate of an al Qaeda network responsible for insurgent activities in the region, including car-bomb and improvised-explosive-device attacks. As coalition forces arrived at the target building, they were engaged by two armed men. The ground force engaged and wounded one of the men. The second surrendered.
— Coalition forces conducted three coordinated operations south of Samarra targeting associates of an al Qaeda senior leader involved in anti-coalition attacks and foreign-terrorist facilitation. During two of the operations, forces requested supporting aircraft, which destroyed two buildings reported to be used by foreign-terrorist facilitators. The ground force saw secondary explosions from one of the buildings, indicating explosives were inside. The buildings were destroyed to prevent further use by terrorists.
— Also in Samarra, as coalition forces secured a target area, they found a small weapons cache, including several machine guns, suicide vests and multiple assault vests with ammunition. The ground force detained seven suspects. To prevent further use by terrorists, forces destroyed two buildings and two vehicles known to be associated with foreign terrorists.
— Intelligence reports led coalition forces east of Samarra, where they targeted locations believed to be safe havens for foreign terrorists. The ground force detained seven suspects on site.
— During operations in Baghdad, coalition troops targeted a suspected terrorist believed to be involved with car bombs and a facilitator and trainer of suicide bombers. As forces secured the target area, they detained three suspects without incident.
Foreign terrorists are trying to derail progress in Iraq, said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. The people of Iraq are helping Iraqi and coalition forces hunt down these terrorists, making Iraq safer for everyone.
In operations over the past several days:
— Coalition forces killed two terrorists yesterday during an operation south of Samarra targeting an individual believed to be an al Qaeda leader of the terrorist network operating in the Salahuddin province. Reports indicate the targeted individual is heavily involved in the production and facilitation of IED and car-bombing attacks, kidnappings, and small-arms and direct-fire attacks against coalition and Iraqi forces. The individual also is believed to lead a group of foreign terrorists, whom he allegedly uses to conduct car-bombing campaigns.
— Soldiers from the 8th Iraqi Army Division advised by U.S. Special Forces soldiers captured a suspected extremist in an operation in Diwaniyah yesterday. The targeted extremist is believed to be involved in illegal activities and have knowledge of several weapons and munitions caches that support explosively formed penetrator and indirect-fire attacks against coalition and Iraqi forces.
— In the Arab Jabour area Nov. 7, Iraqi citizens brought soldiers of 2nd Brigade Combat Team an IED made up of four 57 mm mortars. Soldiers of the 30th Infantry Regiment found a 107 mm rocket while conducting operations in support of Operation Centurion V, a battalion-sized operation designed to help erode enemy resources throughout Arab Jabour.
— Soldiers from 2nd Iraqi Army Division, in partnership with coalition soldiers from 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, discovered 200 pounds of homemade explosives and detained nine suspected enemy fighters south of Mosul, near Qayarrah, Nov. 6.
— Coalition helicopters from 4th Squadron, 6th Air Cavalry Regiment, assisted in killing four enemy fighters and destroying three enemy vehicles in eastern Mosul on Nov. 6 after the individuals were observed transferring weapons and demonstrating hostile intent. Multiple secondary explosions were seen from the vehicles, confirming their cargo of illegal weapons and ammunition.

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill Taliban Fighters in Helmand Province
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2007 Afghan national security forces and coalition forces engaged and killed several Taliban fighters near the Nahr Surkh district of Afghanistans Helmand province yesterday.
The combined force was conducting a reconnaissance patrol near the district when a significant number of insurgents engaged friendly elements with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. The combined force immediately engaged the Taliban fighters with small-arms fire and close-air support, killing many of the insurgents.
“The Taliban is desperate for a success, but at every turn (Afghan national security forces) and coalition forces have successfully stopped them,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman.
In other news, Afghan and coalition forces have refuted Taliban claims of control of the Tarin Kowt-Kandahar road, a major road used for transporting commerce between Kandahar and Oruzgan provinces.
The Taliban claimed Nov. 6 that they had taken control of the road. In response, Afghan and coalition forces quickly launched a mission to secure the road. Once the combined force arrived, they discovered traffic was flowing and that the Taliban’s claims were false. Afghan forces are providing security for the route and remain in control of this ground line of communication.
“In the absence of any military success, the Taliban routinely rely on false reports in a vain attempt to deceive the Afghan people,” Belcher said.

Agent: Terror probe lacking
Activist’s testimony was needed, he says
An FBI agent, testifying Thursday at the sentencing of a Palestinian activist convicted of refusing to appear before a federal grand jury, said the activist’s cooperation would have significantly aided the government probe.
“It would have guided us to things that were significant to our investigation versus trying to look at everything with very limited resources,” FBI Special Agent David Bray said of Abdelhaleem Ashqar, 58.
The sentencing of Ashqar, a business professor who lives outside Washington, was continued until Nov. 21.
The government had accused Ashqar and Muhammad Salah, 53, a former Bridgeview grocer, of being leading members of the Palestinian extremist group Hamas and conspiring to support terrorism from the United States......
CSX Freight Train Derails in DC River
WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. Fire and EMS crews and D.C. police are trying to figure out what led a CSX freight train to derail on a bridge over the Anacostia River near RFK Stadium. No injuries have been reported.
“All of the sudden, I heard this loud noise,” said Alice Spann, who witnessed the derailment. “I looked again and the train was going up in the air, then the track went up the in air real slow, then the rails went up in the air like they were separating form the track, never seen anything like that. The trains were separating and I saw black dust with coals going into the water, the trains going over. The train split in half.”
D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter says five cars are in the river, while a sixth is hanging off the trestle. A total of ten cars were damaged or derailed. Etter says that in addition to coal, some hydraulic fluid and oil ended up in the river, but it has been contained.
“The environmental impact, we’re hoping, is going to be kept to a minimum,” said Etter.
The Federal Railroad Administration say the derailment happened during what is called a “shoving move.” There was a section of cars being moved around near the Benning rail yard.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has also dispatached agents as a precaution. A spokesperson says at this point they do not believe there is a hazmat threat or that the crash is terrorism related.
