Feds strike ID deal over NY licenses
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago
The Bush administration and New York agreed Saturday on a compromise creating a more secure driver's license for U.S. citizens and allowing illegal immigrants to get a version.
New York is the fourth state to reach such an agreement, after Arizona, Vermont and Washington. The issue is pressing for border states, where new and tighter rules are soon to go into effect for crossings.
The deal comes about one month after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced a plan whereby illegal immigrants with a valid foreign passport could obtain a license.
The agreement with the Homeland Security Department will create a three-tier license system in New York, the largest state to sign on so far to the government's post-Sept. 11 effort to make identification cards more secure.
Spitzer, who has faced much criticism on the issue, said the deal means New York "will usher in the most secure licensing system in the nation."
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he was not happy that New York intended to issue IDs to illegal immigrants. But he said there was nothing he could do to stop it.
"I don't endorse giving licenses to people who are not here legally, but federal law does allow states to make that choice," Chertoff said.
New York will produce one ID that will be as secure as a passport and is intended for people who soon will need to meet such requirements, even for a short drive to Canada.
A second version of the license will meet new federal standards of the Real ID Act, a law designed to make it much harder for illegal immigrants or would-be terrorists to obtain licenses.

Thanks.
Just as Spitzer was facing a career-destroying defeat—one which could have hurt Hillary’s chances in New York as well—the traitors in this Administration hand him a huge victory. This is the biggest gift from the Bush Administration to the Democrats since the Sandy Berger wrist slap for treason. Mr. Hunter, Mr. Rohrbacher...time to draft articles of impeachment?
I haven’t been paying much attention because I never imagined he could get away with this. Apparently he can and will. Thanks again.
So wouldn't an answer to that be to change the law so that if the police suspect you won't show up, they can photograph you for the file. They all have some kind of cameras in their cars, right? By giving licensed they are killing a fly with a sledgehammer, when there are flyswatters available.

HS.
Send them home, period.
This assinine move costs you my support for your next wish.
Times 150 million.
Get a clue.
Or twiddle your thumbs till 01/2008.
It’s so amusing reading the stories about how the feds and Spitzer reached a “deal” allowing illegals to have licenses. Chertoff can try and help Spitzer out of the hole he dug for himself but the bottom line is the NY Legislature can still block the scheme and most likely will when it comes funding time.
No state in the US should give driver’s licenses to people that are here illegally. By coming over without permission is proof enough they are criminal.
We all know Hillary and the dimwits need the votes.
The feds haven't done anything here that wasn't already in the works. Spitzer's scheme still has to get past the NY Senate, which will never happen.
This EXISTING law recognizes that states might have a separate, and visually different, license that they issue for local purposes only. But this second license would be no good for the purpose of getting on a plane, train, or boat, nor for applying for a passport.
No "deal" had to be struck. It looks like New York just recognized that it had to abide by the provisions of this law. If it didn't, NY would lose hundreds of millions in federal highway aid. That threat straightened up NY. But recognizing that would have gut-shot this breathless, but dishonest, AP story.
Congressman Billybob
fear? only if they are Republican. Dems welcome the newest additions to their dependency class constituency.
It would be easy to use a certain subscript on the driver's license of a non-citizen, require ID to vote and not have any non-citizens vote. I won't hold my breath.
You’re right, AP is being disingenuous. Even Chertoff admits he has no authority on licenses for illegals when it comes to the non-compliant REAL ID ones. That’s up to the state Legislature and AP is being a little misleading with the way they’re wording their articles.
This is the last straw! We have no domestic President, only a foreign one!
I guess national security no longer matters.
So ... after this next election, will Our OFFICIAL, government sanctioned GREETING be ...GREETINGS, COMRADE ... or... Ola, Senor!??
You’d think the Feds would be discouraging states from issuing any type of identification to illegals. I’m really surprised that Sensenbrenner added that provision in REAL ID given the fact the government absolutely refuses to enforce immigration laws.
“Im really surprised that Sensenbrenner added that provision in REAL ID given the fact the government absolutely refuses to enforce immigration laws.”
No kidding!
And I assume that felons not eligible to vote; criminal, illegal aliens; and any others (e.g. already registered elsewhere) disqualified, have no more compunction against lying, than they do about breaking any other laws.
If no one checks, then there is no reason to fear that 'under penalty of perjury' boiler plate.
Checking keeps dishonest people honest...or else.
Oh, before I forget:
Would Daghlian take the same attitude about carding for tobacco (18) or alcohol (21) sales, since there is a sign posted stating that it is against the law to attempt to purchase underage; and that the establishment won't sell to underage buyes? That if they SAY they are of age, they must be, because "you assume people don't lie"?
