Think you've got problems? Let Ken Ilgunas offer you some perspective. Ken's got problems, and the Buffalo News has generously offered him space to tell the world about them:
I am 24, live with my parents, can't find work and am floundering in a sea of debt five figures high. I think of myself as ambitious, independent and hardworking. Now I'm dependent, unemployed and sleeping under the same Super Mario ceiling fan that I did when I was 7.How did this happen? I did what every upstanding citizen is supposed to do. I went to college. . . .Upon graduating, I was helplessly launched headfirst into the "real world," equipped with a degree in history and $32,000 in student loans. Before ricocheting back home, I would learn two important lessons: 1) There are no well-paying--let alone paying--jobs for history majors. 2) The real world is really tough.
At one point, Ken was so "desperate" that he even considered working for a bank or an insurance company!
"I had hit an all-time low. Could I surrender my soul for health coverage and a steady income? Could I sacrifice my ideals by falling into line?"
Our hero stood firm.

Given Ken's attitude, I thought he could use sage advice from those who managed to take the less honorable approach of getting a job and paying taxes.
And the problem with that is. . .?
Ken needs to be in mommy and daddy's home - he hasn't grown up yet.
What a selfish little jerk!
His parents need to do him a favor and kick him out and cut off any support now!
Let him get an honest job and a few blows to his enormous ego to make him a getter man.
Banks and insurance companies offer good jobs, even to history majors. LOL!
“equipped with a degree in history”
That’s your first mistake.
Dallas ISD starts first year teachers at $42000 a year. Quit whining ,get off your can and apply. Probably about the same at any big city district.
Before ricocheting back home, I would learn two important lessons: 1) There are no well-paying—let alone paying—jobs for history majors. 2) The real world is really tough.
Welcome to the ‘real world’, dummy!!
Accepted a MA lib (30 years old) as a tenant last year.
College grad (U of Maine) working as a temp.
He didn't want to compromise his intetgrity either.
So, I compromised it for him... eviction!!!
Last I heard he was still hanging on to his integrity by working as a clerk at a Boston non-profit.
I've no advice for Ken, but I do suggest mommy and daddy kick his lazy liberal A$$ outta the house.
I think he could expand on the number two, as John Wayne said “Life is hard. Its even harder when you’re stupid.” (or something like that).
Good luck getting laid with no job and a Super Mario celing fan.
It took that long to realize there are no jobs for history majors? Duh. Basically, you’ve got the same options as a Poli Sci major (my major) ... you teach or go to law school.
And, if you want to complain about $32K in debt ... wait until law school. My debt’s closer to $110K ... but at least I’ve got a job, a house and a woman who can appreciate that I don’t live with my parents.
H
Yeah, no doubt.
I lost a job when I was that age and ended up digging ditches, literaly, for a cable company. I was dang glad of it too. It was either that or my 1year old didn’t eat.
ITS CALLED BEING A MAN!!!!!
Good grief.
I’m 24, married, own a home, no college debt, great job because I made decisions that got me here. My younger sister committed to the same major as this idiot, history, but worked her fingers off to get into a fully-funded graduate program so she can get a professorship someday. Neither of us is sponging off our parents, nor will our other siblings.
His parents should kick him out, then we can see how his principles manage.
I partly blame his parents for coddling him. They are getting what they deserve by allowing him back under their roof. He’ll still be there in 10 years. Should be 18 and out the door - you are welcome back at holidays and special events, but find your own home.
My advice.
Grow Up!
We told our kids they could major in anything they wanted. We also told them they had 90 days after graduation to be out of our house, so they had best choose a major that would support them.
Both made the 90 day cut-off. Neither look likely to rebound home (after 5 years on their own, good jobs, etc.). Preparation for independence starts shortly after the child starts to walk.
This moron doesn't understand the concept of "work" or "integrity".
The only "work" you can do to compromise your "integrity" is an illegal one or running for political office.
Ken is a sniveling, self-righteous slacker loser who views sponging off his parents as more ethical than, say, digging ditches for The Man. He has a great deal of growing up to do and at 24 it’s almost too late. What is he saying here? That if it weren’t for the necessity of repaying money he borrowed from you and me he’d be doing...what?
I’ve got a history degree. I don’t view it as a mistake.
It is an opportunity. An opportunity to try to find a way to make a living...
His not spreading his whiny genes around would benefit humanity. Go ahead and stay with Mom and Dad.
