Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to power—twice—and now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. It was done in Michigan a few years ago. Jeffrey Feiger ran against John Engler for governor, Feiger was the attorney for Jack Kevorkian. Lots of people went to the Dem primary and voted Feiger in just for the entertainment value. The guy he was running against in the primary actually had a chance against Engler, he was a decent guy.
How did that work out?

we ended up with Clinton, and the Republicans blamed Perot instead of Bush— so we ended up with RHINOs that know that they can do what they want as long as they can hold the Clintons and Perot over our heads.....
I’d say the Dems won— not because they deserve to win— but because it seems the voters that whine about Republicans not having a spine to stand up to the Dems have the exact same problem....but they can’t even stand up to their own darned Reps.

again— you miss the point.. the blame is not with the voter.. the blame is with the guy we elected betraying his voters. Until we teach our Republican leaders that we hold them accountable- we might as well not bother with the voting process at all....
I for one will not vote third party. I will not waste my vote on a third party candidate.
If Giuliani is the nominee, I won't cast a vote for president at all.
The Republican party was born out of principle. It was originally known as the anti-slavery Party. The Whig Party lost their principles, refused to take a firm stand on slavery and faded into history.
If the Republican party abandons its principles to life and liberty and the preservation of our posterity, then the Republican party deserves to go the way of the Whigs. To nominate Giuliani is to abandon all that the Republican party has stood for these last 150 years.
Giuliani is no more a Republican than Hillary.
That is so true. Rudy would have supported Federal Funding of Slavery for those unable to buy their own. He now supports Fed Funding of Abortion for those down on their cash.
But Rudy is NO kind of conservative.
He is anti-gun, pro-abortion, anti-family, anti-marriage, pro-gay, pro-illegal amnesty, pro-tax, pro-spend, etc., etc.
He supported the democrat candidate for governor(?) in New York; he keeps a priest molester on his staff;
It will make no difference if you choose Hillary or if you choose Rudy.
Senator Sam Brownback and Congressman Duncan Hunter have the highest commitment to the pro-life cause, from conception to natural death.
While listening on EWTN radio, I heard both Sam Brownback and Duncan Hunter speak at the pro-life rally in Washington, D.C.
And year after year, Duncan Hunter has tried to get legislation passed with the bill he authored, the personhood-at-conception bill that has over 100 co-sponsors, which would define personhood as moment of conception, so, it would allow us to have a reversal of the effects of Roe v. Wade without a constitutional amendment.
Sam Brownback is constantly a loud and frequent voice for preborn and disabled voiceless persons.
Alan Keyes also has a high pro-life commitment.
I don’t have anything against Romney’s faith, but I do have a HUGE problem with his flip flops.
I know a Mormon who agrees with me.
I do not know how much of a sinner you are, but I do know that you are a first class jackass!
Wrong. The ONLY way Clinton gets the White House is if the Republicans pick Giuliani as their standard bearer.
I won't vote third party under any circumstances. But I will not vote for Giuliani under any circumstances either. A vote for Giuliani in the primaries is a vote for Hillary in the general. Keep that in mind.

Well of COURSE he’s not running on it, then he would be a FULL-FLEDGED Liberal, not just liberal-lite.

these people?It is cheaper just to sit this one out. But a third party movement--however brief--would punish our RINO enemies.
Which is what politics is all about.
Only to people like you that are so intellectually lacking that you cannot see the difference between Giuliani and Clinton. Abortion is a nice issue but it is by no means the most important issue, especially considering that the only thing a president can even do to change abortion is appoint judges. And even that's not certain. Think of how many years we have had pro-life presidents. What exactly have they done?
