Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to powertwiceand now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Excerpts:

Two words: RUNOFF ELECTIONS.....
I thought Thompson was going to solve this so-called problem for the GOP.
Great! The Guaranteed Democratic Win Party!
Sam Brownback had many faults, but he was pro-life as pro life can be (Don’t give me any crap about Immigration).
Also the grand ayatollah himself wanted that great moral leader Newt to run for President. How does that square with his opposition to Rudy? Let me repeat, I am not a Rudy supporter in the primaries, but if these groups want to vote themselves out of existence, like Ross Perot, go ahead.
If we get 4 years of Hillary, they will be eliminated as an opposition group.
I am a Christian conservative, but they should not do this. If they do, they will cause damage equal to that of Ross Perot. Different issue, same result.
Clinton + Pelosi + Reid = ?
Man comes home and find the wife in bed with his best friend.
He pulls out his gun and sticks it under his chin.
The wife starts laughing.
He says, don’t laugh, your next.
Talk is cheap. On election day, when the reality of a likely Hillary presidency becomes clear, evangelicals are not going to vote 3rd party.
exactly... Another Ross Perot is the answer for the libs.
There is no one conservative leader, IMO these guys are trying to remain relevant, I think if comes down to pro abortion anti famliy Hillary vs a Romney or a Thompson, it won’t matter what Dobson has to say, and that party will go nowhere.
The next President will have at least two (2) Supreme Court Nominations, no way anyone who cares about life puts Hillary in charge of selecting who they will be.
From the article:
It would be like asking an African-American to choose between Strom Thurmond and George Wallace or asking Abe Lincoln to vote for a pro-slavery candidate. I personally can’t do it. I am not going to criticize those who choose the lesser-of-two-evils option.
***Sounds right.
“Oh great wise leader, I say this vote is mine, but neighbor says it is hers. What should we do.”
“Let’s cut it in two, then each of you can have half.”
Newsweak... real insight into the Republican right. /s
Newsweak is trying to cause division.
If we get 4 years of Hillary, they will be eliminated as an opposition group.: SO SICK OF THAT KIND OF RHETORIC: IF THE REPUBLICANS LOOSE- IT’ll BE THEIR FAULT: For electing a LIBERAL/Rino as their candidate (Sheesh..you and others act as if these VOTERS: OWE their Alegience to the All Powerful Political Party, rather than the other way around- in which our elected leaders must “earn” our most fought after right to vote!
I really hate what the Values Voters have been doing to conservatism and to the Republican Party.
I do wish they'd act on their threat and leave. Permanently.
"Propelling GWB to power" is not exactly a big plus, IMO, and I for one am sick to death of the irrelevant criteria they use to select their Bishop Of The United States.
They are a disaster for conservatism and for the Party (for which I have been active since 1968 as a Republican youth and from a churchgoing Republican family).
Abraham Lincoln started the Republican Party, not Dr. Dobson. Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan have most recently articulated the deareat values of conservatism, not Dr. Dobson.
Who are these people?
Oh yea. Everytime I look for answers to great moral questions I turn to ...
... Newsweek? LOL!
Look at the facts.
Right now mediamatters and CREW are being used to go after the GOP and conservatives. Just wait until they get a hold of the DoJ, IRS, FEC, and FCC. They used IRS in the first Clinton administration, there may not be a GOP congress to watchover.
These people are stalinist. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
There is a certain contingent of them here on FR who crow about and revel in the "lesson" they taught the Republican Party in 2006.
Perhaps they did. All the more reason for them to leave.
