'This Is Not a Bluff'- A Christian political leader on the threat of a third party.

Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to power—twice—and now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Excerpts:

Typical Newsweek attacking the conservative political types with no real journalism that is essentially blown up from nothing to do a hatchet job. Nothing to see here folks. Move on.

Rush addressed this briefly today. Clinton’s negatives are so high they prohibit her election. A recent poll shows 50% of likely voters stated they would NEVER vote for her under any circumstances. It’s up from 45%. That’s a stat that guarantees defeat, unless...

UNLESS...you don’t need 51% to win. The ONLY way Clinton gets the White House is a conservative or evangelical 3rd party. Look for their accomplices in the MSM to cheerlead for this.

My, how the Mainstream Media has been all over this one!

In fact, they’re TRYING to build up a third-party run for conservatives.

DEMOCRAT/MSM MANTRA: If we say it enough, it will be true!

***Sounds right.

If Hillary wins after a significant third party run by the single issue anti-abortion crowd, I'll personally enjoy reminding you of every pro-abortion judge Hillary appoints, and every new Planned Parenthood office opened.

Even if Giuliani wanted pro-abortion judges, Republican senators wouldn't support them, so they wouldn't get past the vetting process. Wild claims that Giuliani = Hillary are just ignorant.

Political parties do matter. Empowering the Republican party in the White House will do more good, and less damage, than empowering the Democrat party similarly. Regardless of the views of any individual candidate on any one issue.

ya know— it is sad that 15 years later people are still buying the lie that Perot is why Clinton won....

the truth is that Bush LOST the election- all his own doing. do recall “Read my lips”????? The fiscal conservatives ran to Perot- but only because our Republican President committed political suicide.

The MSM does a great job of keeping the social conservatives and the fiscal conservatives at odds with each other and we fall in line- blaming each other.....

when will we learn to blame the Republicans who we elect and betray us- instead of blaming each other?

The truth is that most (about 2/3) of the American voters think their leaders are too liberal- weather in the Dem or Republican party.

conservatism wins.

we just have to stop fighting each other- and put the blame where it belongs- the Republicans DC that actually need us to shut down the lines in order for them to pay attention to what we want......

Most social conservatives are also fiscally conservative.

Most fiscal conservatives believe in God and don’t hate Christians.

Personal Responsibility is at the core of both.

“Great! The Guaranteed Democratic Win Party!”

I’m afraid that’s the GOP, regardless of whether there is a third party or not.

And I say it’s criminal, CRIMINAL, that Barak Obama is being cut out as an option for the Democrats. I say, Obama, start your own party if you have to! Run as an independent! Show those Democrats that there is another way!

Obama for Independent!

***Let’s see. You basically admitted you were a troll on another thread, and now you’re going to stalk me. OK. I suppose you owe Free Republic a list of people who supported aRINOld so we can stalk them. It’s only fair. I wouldn’t doubt if the folks who supported that abomination are the same who support tootyfruityRudy, and cannot learn the lesson.

I ALWAYS look to NewsWeAk to explain the intricacies of Republican politics to me. Well, usually. Sometimes, perhaps. Or, once in a while. Just who is kidding whom, anyway?

The Dems would love it if Rudy were the GOP's candidate. They need someone who is easy to beat or they need a third party candidate to split off the evangelicals who won't vote for Rudy.

A few years ago in Michigan the Dem machine got out the vote by way of the union organizers to get everyone to go vote for McCain in the primary, to defeat Bush here. To make the task easier, they pulled the Democrats out of the election and said they would choose the nominee in a caucus later on. It worked, Bush lost Michigan in the primary. Relatives of ours were crowing about how they helped kill Bush's chances here.

agreed.....

but right now- these two groups seem to be at war over the Republican party.....or at least according to the MSM...and sadly enough- I see a lot of it here on FR...

It might be just me- but both fiscal and social conservatives- are attacked and accused of helping to create another “Perot” stlye win for the Dems....

I explain it better here:

Well, thank God evangelicals are not stupid, and will never let Hill and Bill reign as our CICs’.

They will not do that to our guys out in two war theaters sweating and bleeding.

But Christian “leaders” who speak to Newsweek, an enemy publication, are another story.
