BONE changes in Neanderthal remains which, it has been suggested1, might be caused by rickets are not unlike those seen in certain treponemal diseases, notably congenital syphilis. Examining the Neanderthal collection at the British Museum (Natural History), I noted several features compatible with treponemal disease.

IIRC, one of The History Channel shows said he got out early on a
“compassionate”release as he was going mad.
But the Wikipedia (yeah, I know, verify before trusting!) makes it
sound like he got out early (six-and-a-half of an 11-year term)
based on good behaviour.

True. In California, it was Spanish policy for soldiers to intermarry with the Indians as a means of bringing them into the Spanish Empire.

Unfortunately, diseases were the primary cause of death at the California missions -- diseases for which the Indians had little resistance in the first generation or two.

By the end of the mission era (1834), the death rate had reached about 90% in most mission areas.

Clarification: I by no means, want to belittle the average Englishman, nor the achievements and contributions by the English over the centuries. I will forever take issue, however, with the continued propagation of lies and distortions among British historians and commentators over the years, while glossing over the atrocities committed by their own government abroad.
