Editor,
We wish to respond to the recent incident involving the desecration of the Mexican national flag that was raised Friday on the south side of Scholes Hall.
The incident is still being investigated, but what we do know at this point is that after a ceremony celebrating the Mexican independence day - Dieciseis de Septiembre - the flag that was raised during the celebration was subsequently taken down and, as we understand it, ripped to shreds.
We understand that a suspect has been apprehended by the police, but the investigation is still ongoing at this time. We want it to be understood that the flag desecration is abhorrent to President David Schmidly and everyone in the administration.
In light of incidents that have taken place in the past several days involving students being targeted because of their race or nationality, we want it to be known that UNM will not tolerate acts of racism and xenophobia. These incidents will be answered with disciplinary and/or legal action against the responsible individuals. The person who perpetrated this despicable act will answer for it.
We wish to offer apologies on behalf of UNM to the Mexican Consul to New Mexico, Juan Manuel Solano; to the Mexican Student Association; to all Mexican nationals who have been affected by this deplorable act; and to anyone else who has been adversely affected by this incident. Please know we are doing everything in our power to make sure this act will be sternly
addressed.

“Obviously, you need to work on understanding the absurdity of your viewpoint, when 1 considers youre NOT having RESPECT for the country IN WHICH YOU ARE LOCATED”
Amen!
Note to Rita the University Diversity PITA ~!
Any foreign nations flag flying over US soil is no better than litter when such seditious trash is being flown outside of the rules, regulations and laws set forth by my countries constitution on public property or my private property.
I will tear down , and destroy such when flown in such a illegal and disgraceful insulting manner to US Citizens.
Is that clear enough for ya Senorita Diversity ?
Raising any foreign flag illegally is disrespectful to citizens of the United States. We have rights as well ya know .... You must be as respectful of all if you truly believe in your BS diversity sh*t’n shineola show.
Doom on enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC ~
First get a good lawyer.
What you did is/should be protected by the first amendment. Those who hate American have no problem burning an American Flag or worse*, and they are seldom if ever charged with criminal activity when they burn an American Flag.
The Supreme Court had no problem with the burning of an American Flag in Texas vs Johnson, as they saw that act as Free Speech.
The link below will take you to that case:
http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/faclibrary/case.aspx?id=1787
Who, knows, your local ACLU might want to support you.
Have someone search the files of New Mexico newspapers for pictures of American flag burning or descretion by La Raza and other Mexican Hate America groups.
*Beckwith, would you please post the link to what the Portland Hatriotic did to an American Flag in Portland.
I don’t understand how a group, such as La Raza or others honoring themselves, should be considered any better than such groups as the Ku Klux Klan, Nazis, or jihadists.
IMHO ANY group that puts itself above others, is grounded in hatred and separatism, instead of attempting to bring ALL people together in love and caring, should be abolished as a viable organization.
We, as a nation, need to be able to stand together, as brothers and sisters, to fight any onslaught to the American way of life, as set out in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, whether from without, or within.
Laws do not make us a country, rights make us a country. When our individual rights are replaced by overreaching laws
we will no longer be free. Laws should encourage freedom for all, not restrain it.
If it ain’t good for us, as individuals, or for our future as a nation, it needs to be stopped, NOW.
When some within our borders honor other nations, above our own, THEY are the seditionists.
Lincoln's administration supported the mexicans because they considered the French friendly to the Confederacy.
(I found one reference claiming that the battle of Puebla was responsible for the US federal government's very ability to defeat the South.)
I think it is celebrated more in the US than in mexico and it is NOT a national holiday there.
However, September 16th IS mexican independance day: for which UNM deems it appropriate to raise a foreign flag over US soil...which is the historic means of signifying conquest.
Travis thanks for posting those pictures.
Peter, you might want to start collecting these pictures and the specifics of when they happened.
Our nation started turning its back on the burning and descretion of the American Flag in the late 1960’s.
As a result such acts are now considered to be acts of Free Speech.
Now the state of New Mexico is trying to say that you don’t have that right when it comes to your act of free speech with a Mexican Flag.
There are many pictures of US Flag burnings by Mexicans. Here's one.

Here are dozens of photos:

I suggest as many of these photos as possible be sent to the institution doing all the complaining.
UNM should go one step further and outlaw ALL phobias! Only good can come of such a step.
Unfortunately I don't know the date of the news report. That could be today, or it has already happened.
If they raise the flag properly in conjunction with the US flag that's fine, but even if they symbolically raise just the Mexican flag that is what started the entire problem in the first place.

Peter, did they already have the 2pm Mexican flag re-raising that was mentioned on the local news on the video clip linked above? What happened?
I got a very nice young secretary type when calling the first number. and had a very civil discourse with her. Please try to stay calm, I know it’s hard.
I reminded her that we are a nation of laws, and those laws include how our flag is to be treated. The University was in the wrong, and is now scapgoating a patriot.
PEOPLE, LETS FLOOD THESE LINES!!
Obviously not, if you've been following the state budget battle. The RATS want vastly increased spending in a state that was in recession all during the Bush boom. So they demand permanent tax hikes on everything under the sun, to spend themselves out of poverty.
Nobody has the balls to take on the MEA, which has a "service bureau" front group that marks up health insurance costs 40%, and then funnels that money illegally back to the union, and the RAT party.
Still, I think most anti-UN protesters know that the state police would not hesitate to bust them for burning a UN flag. The cops know which side their bread is buttered on, and they have to keep the liberals happy.
