Three men have been arrested for planning attacks on Frankfurt's international airport and the U.S. military base in Ramstein, the German Defense Minister said Wednesday.
"There was an imminent threat," Franz Josef Jung told Germany's ARD broadcaster. He declined to elaborate.
Two of the suspects had German citizenship while the third was Pakistani, Germany's Sudwestrundfunk public broadcaster said.
German federal prosecutors said they had arrested three suspected members of "an Islamic motivated terrorist organization." It was not immediately clear whether the three were suspected of having links to al Qaeda.
Sudwestrundfunk said the men were arrested Tuesday evening and were close to carrying out the attacks. German and U.S. officials have warned of the possibility of a terrorist attack, and security measures have been raised, they said.

“There was an imminent threat,” German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told reporters. Officials said the three had no steady work and were drawing unemployment benefits while their main occupation was the plot. A top legislator said the group could have struck “in a few days,” noting a “sensitive period” that includes the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“German police foil huge car bomb terror attack”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Several terrorist plots have been nipped in the bud in Germany since September 11, 2001, but this one has shocked Germans more than any other as it exposed the existence of jihadists as a home-grown terrorist potential.
The features of 28-year-old Fritz G were blanked out in his arrest photographs yesterday but there was no doubt about it: he was white and, for his neighbours in Ulm, quite unmistakeably our Fritz.
Like his accomplice, 22-year-old Daniel S. from the Saarland, he was a Muslim convert.
“Converts tend to be more radical and fanatical than those who have been Muslims since they were in the cradle, said Hans Joachim Giessmann, a terrorism expert at the Hamburg Institute for Peace Research.
They are driven either by politics or the fervour of their new faith rather than any cultural tradition.
All three - the third man has been identified as the Turk Adem Y, 29 - met in Pakistan where investigators believe they received explosives training at a Taleban-linked camp. The three are believed to be members of the Islamic Jihad Union, an Uzbek-based group with close links to al-Qaeda.”
lol - is that ‘our Fritz’ in the pic I posted up thread?

“Germans arrest three in alleged plot against U.S. targets”
Peter O’Neil, CanWest Europe Correspondent, CanWest News Service
Published: Wednesday, September 05, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the arrests prevented “massive bomb attacks,” while German Defence Minster Franz Josef Jung said the plot posed an “imminent security threat.”
This assertion hinted that the plotters may have been planning to move on or close to the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.
“The suspects named discotheques and pubs and airports frequented by Americans with a view to detonating explosives loaded in cars and killing or injuring many people,” Harms told a press conference.
“The apparent motive is hatred of Americans,” said Federal Police chief Joerg Ziercke.
The men, in their 20s, had assembled 700 kilograms of hydrogen peroxide, which was used in the London bombings that left 56 public transit users and workers dead in 2005.
The trio, identified as 28-year-olds Fritz G. and Adem Y., and 21-year-old Daniel S., are suspected members of Islamic Jihad Union, a group with roots in Uzbekistan that has ties to al-Qaeda, and attended a training camp in Pakistan in 2006.
Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said one of the suspects had links to the Islamist scene in Neu-Ulm in southern Germany.
“The danger that international terrorism represents is a reality not only for the soldiers, police and personnel charged with the reconstruction in Afghanistan ... but also inside our own country,” he said.
German police put them under surveillance in December after one was detained under suspicion of spying on an American base near Frankfurt.
The Frankfurt International Airport, used by many Americans, was one of the alleged targets, according to unconfirmed reports.”
