“Germans arrest three in alleged plot against U.S. targets”

Published: Wednesday, September 05, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the arrests prevented “massive bomb attacks,” while German Defence Minster Franz Josef Jung said the plot posed an “imminent security threat.”

This assertion hinted that the plotters may have been planning to move on or close to the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.

“The suspects named discotheques and pubs and airports frequented by Americans with a view to detonating explosives loaded in cars and killing or injuring many people,” Harms told a press conference.

“The apparent motive is hatred of Americans,” said Federal Police chief Joerg Ziercke.

The men, in their 20s, had assembled 700 kilograms of hydrogen peroxide, which was used in the London bombings that left 56 public transit users and workers dead in 2005.

The trio, identified as 28-year-olds Fritz G. and Adem Y., and 21-year-old Daniel S., are suspected members of Islamic Jihad Union, a group with roots in Uzbekistan that has ties to al-Qaeda, and attended a training camp in Pakistan in 2006.

Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said one of the suspects had links to the Islamist scene in Neu-Ulm in southern Germany.

“The danger that international terrorism represents is a reality not only for the soldiers, police and personnel charged with the reconstruction in Afghanistan ... but also inside our own country,” he said.

German police put them under surveillance in December after one was detained under suspicion of spying on an American base near Frankfurt.
The Frankfurt International Airport, used by many Americans, was one of the alleged targets, according to unconfirmed reports.”
