Bill O'Reilly: "FreeRepublic Needs A Full Time Monitor. It Has None."
Fox News/Bill O'Reilly Show

Edited on 08/03/2007 4:16:59 PM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

This morning only a couple of minutes before 5am, I was surfing around when I came upon Fox News. Bill O'Reilly was closing out his show with him reading off a few viewers emails and him giving a small response to each one. One of them defended FreeRepublic, saying that doing a search, Daily Kos had thousands of certain cuss words, and FR had none. O'Reilly's response to that was: "FreeRepublic Needs A Monitor. It Has None." (And then he moved on to another email)

"..Alan Novak, Wichita, KS: "Comparing the Free Republic to the Daily Kos, I searched the F-word. Daily Kos, almost seven thousand mentions. Free Republic, none.""

The funny thing is, you can’t write something without SOMEONE being offended it seems. Someone always starts a fight. My problem is, I don’t like to let them “win” it. I don’t let people get away with garbage.

Take the racing forum, e.g. Just last year I got in a tussle (along with others) with a long-time poster who tried the old “how dare you judge my opinions” argument, getting really uppity and telling all that they were horrible for arguing her points. I put her down finally about the circular “judgemental” nonsense. Many people PMed me saying “BRAVO! Touche!” and the Mod wrote me telling me I did good with “the most mentally unstable person on the board”! LOL

FR needs a monitor? The only monitor Mr. O’Reilly could be is the black board monitor, keeping a keen eye on those who would dare raid the chalk and eraser supplies.

He also has to acknowledge that this site is HUGE with TONS of posts and posters every minute.

That is hard to moderate. It’s not as if they can read all the thousands of posts coming on every minute.

It’s true of ANY forum site. Part of the inherent problem is having “outsiders” posting on YOUR site. It’s not simply 1 person’s site; thousands are adding to it.

He should see the language (never mind some of the film) on YouTube. THAT is a site that needs to be really moderated better than it is. Posts with all kinds of vile language from 6 mos. ago are still there for children to see.

I wonder if Bill would like some falafel with his wine?

Just asking - I hear the two go quite well together.

Thats why once a verbal battle goes on, we all want to get the last word in! Human nature, I guess. But it does feel good sometimes to get the upperhand with someone you heartily disagree.

Hey, are you trying to pick one with me buddy? LOL

Maybe you should stop using your time and computer at work, time and use of your work computer is money and it is the same as stealing money from your employer.

Very good point.

I know You Tube is horrible—I sometimes catch my son on it (he’s 11) and while some of the stuff is great, I always cringe because there’s usually some questionable link or ad on even the most innocuous videos. It’s the same with sites like lyrics.com which they sometimes go to to find song lyrics. There are all sorts of links to porn and nasty stuff. I think marketers do it on purpose!! It’s really scary out there!

Nope!

My point is I don’t think it’s GOOD to let someone who’s being a jackass look like he’s won by scaring off everyone. That’s just not right.

Of course, sometimes I’m just being bull-headed about MY opinion!

On a positive note, O'Reilly's bloviating has given FreeRepublic increased public exposure, and it appears that we are drawing new members at an accelerated rate.

Thanks, Bill! What this world needs is more FReepers!!

LOL! As I was just about to post, FR has monitors - we know because we have seen the ZOT!

What BOR demands is some form of perfection in scanning millions of posts for any objectionable content.

FR has excellent rules for the community and excellent monitors (the Admin Mods plus all of us), but some occasional outrageous post may slip through..... the fundamental difference between DailyKosFreaks and FR is that the DK community loves the most egregious and offensive posts, embraces them, and the depravity is fundamental to the DNA and the outlook of the DK ‘community’.....

Thats why you have an opinion. Its okay to be bull headed if you believe you are right. The problem with BOR is that he chooses no side most of the time, even when he is right, he can’t stand up for it, he has to demean the side that is right, in an effort to be Fair and Balanced to those who are in the wrong.

Sometimes you just can’t balance things. People can be just plain wrong, and there is no need to find balance. That is the reason I don’t like this moderate idea. To me they are those who really have no opinion.

I totally agree with you.

O’Reilly Settles Sexual Harassment Suit with Producer:

Why settle out of court if you’re not guilty?

My feelings also.

Bloviate on that BOR.

Also one more thing you might want to bloviate on BOR, inquiring minds want to know.

Since you were born in 1949, just kind of wondering what you did in the war.
Oh, never mind, found it, says, you chose not to serve.
How the heck did that work out for you?
My hubby and thousands like him who were drafted and served their country when called did not have a choice. What box on the selective service form letter was that on?

Just a little bloviating from you needed here.

Keep in mind that the same Bill O'Reilly on Fox was the same Bill O'Reilly on Inside Edition just 20 years ago: a clip of him from those days.

Thanks for the link. I watched it. I thought Nintendo was a huge waste of time in 1988, too.

I agree that many people are insecure in their beliefs, or just enjoy positive reinforcement. I guess that O'Reilly fears competition. Maybe that is why it is alleged that he has blacklisted Michael Savage. IMO, if O'Reilly were not insecure himself he would welcome competition from Free Republic and others.

As Rush Limbaugh would probably say, "Come on in the water's fine!"

“What BOR demands is some form of perfection in scanning millions of posts for any objectionable content.”
“FR has excellent rules for the community and excellent monitors (the Admin Mods plus all of us), but some occasional outrageous post may slip through.”

What you Freeps are doing here is “demand some form of perfection in Bill’s ability to properly screen his data sources.” Might it just be that BOR got it wrong? BOR is not going to say a monitor is needed unless he had some apparent factual basis for doing so. So what was the factual basis? If the factual basis relied upon by BOR supports his conclusion then kuddos to his proper analysis. However, as is known by me and all frequenting this forum, the facts do not support his inference that the posting here is out of control, hateful, or irresponsible. Therefore, I submit he had bad data.

So call into question his bad data. He made a mistake. But it was one of fact and not one of biased or skewed interpretation of facts for purposes of dissing this forum or promoting a social/political agenda.

As noted in post 9: “Gee, I see comments pulled by moderators all the time. Obviously, he doesn’t spend enough time on this site. (Imagine that)” 9 posted on 08/03/2007 4:11:04 AM PDT by rbg81 (DRAIN THE SWAMP!!)

BOB can’t investigate everything himself. Therefore he has to rely upon others. Which means that sometimes mistakes will be made. He isn’t perfect, but he also not the thought police, although word has it he supports the hate crime charges brought against the koran toilet student dunking recidivist.
