Update: Grand Bargainers Pushing Amendments without Divulging Contents
"The Corner" Blog; Nat. Rev. Online ^ | 6/27/07 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

From a Different Irritated but Fighting Hard GOP Senate Aide [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

The Grand Bargainers are playing "hide the ball." We are not seeing language - they are trying to move this thing through without allowing full review and debate. 373 pages thrown together yesterday - AND AILA, a liberal advocacy group, gets to see it before fellow Republicans? What a slap in the face...

Now - the Grand Bargainers are trying to roll through "tabling votes" to make some attempt to show strength in support of / or in opposition to various amendments to keep their deal "cobbled together."

When we get to cloture tomorrow - any Senator who votes in support of Cloture will be voting in favor of this sham process and against fellow Senators who are trying to shine light on this bill. There is no excuse for votes in favor of this process - it is undemocratic, it is unfair and it tells you everything you need to know about the strength of this bill if light is allowed to shine on it...

You know, apart from the merits of the bill (which are awful) the procedures they are using to ram it through are totally disgraceful.

Besides the secrecy, the most stupid - and incredible - part of the process is rushing through a bill by the July 4th recess. Something this complex should take months. The world's "greatest deliberative body" is neither great nor deliberative today. The Open Borders Crowd is so desperate they want to push their sham legislation through before they can be stopped. And that's why they MUST be stopped - because this process is an affront to our open democracy and a slap to the intelligence of the American people.

Ok...I admit to being puzzled.

I was not aware there was ANOTHER cloture vote tomorrow. Can you or someone explain this?

This will give many on the fence an excuse to not vote for it.

I think the lines may be fried already, can’t get through on the 800 number, reached the senate switchboard, but my senators office has a recording saying they are experiencing heavy call volume. Called the local office early this morning.

As I understand it, yesterdays vote was a vote to bring the bill back from the dead and 'debate' it. (Cloture #1 - 60 votes required - they got 64)

Tomorrow's vote will be to cut off debate on it. (Cloture #2 - 60 votes required)

And Friday's vote will be to up or down the bill (50 votes required)

It's all a sham. Nothing but deceit in the whole bill and the whole process.

We PAID these people to lie, cheat and steal, anything to get this bill passed. ANYTHING for or against the laws of man or God.

Politico's are liars, cheats and thieves with no morals, scruples or honor.

How can elected elected official, a representative of the people, vote for, in good conscience, a bill that they have not even had an opportunity to see? Not being able to read the language should be reason enough not to vote for it. What good is voting if you don’t know what it is you’re voting for? Makes a mockery of the whole idea of representative government.

What’s everyone so upset about? After all this is now the most ethical Congress in history as promised by the leadership when they started. Why should we “little people” worry about such details when our betters know whats best for us. If it weren’t so then “watch dogs of democracy”, our media, would be screaming about this process. So just get yourself another glass of white wine and watch a rerun of “Friends” or maybe “Sienfeld” and don’t worry about it.
