Bloomberg no longer a Republican

Associated Press

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg left the Republican Party on Tuesday and switched to unaffiliated, a move certain to be seen as a prelude to an independent presidential bid that would upend the 2008 race.

The billionaire former CEO, who was a lifelong Democrat before he switched to the Republican Party in 2001 for his first mayoral run, said the change in his voter registration does not mean he is running for president.

"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city," Bloomberg said.

The 65-year-old mayor has increasingly been the subject of speculation that he will run as an independent in 2008, despite his repeated promises to leave politics after the end of his term in 2009. He has fueled the buzz with increasing out-of-state travel, a greater focus on national issues and repeated criticism of the partisan politics that dominate Washington.

This is a breaking news update. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

What great news. I wish we could convince the other RINOs to do the same.

This fool won't capture any part of the electorate.

Bloomberg makes John Anderson look like Ronald Reagan.

Yep. Bloomberg splits the liberal vote. Hurrah! Unfortunately, he will not draw enough to matter, in all likelihood.

No, I think he’ll take votes from the Dems. If he had tried to get the GOP nomination, however, he probably could have gotten it simply because he had the money and the power and we don’t really have a front-runner right now.

He was a Dem all his life, but because he left the Dems to buy the NYC mayoralty, he lost his position in the pecking order. Otherwise, he’d probably be the Dem candidate for Prez.

I also believe, that just like in 92 & 98, the Clintons know it and are working behind the scenes to ensure there is a third party candidate.

I’m breaking all my rules and wathcing the spitter on msnbc, who is having verbal orgasms over the prospect of mikey jumping in and then ultimately giving the presidency to her heinous.

Anyway, I switched over there while it was on commercial....then the show came on....but the spitter wasn’t ready for the air..and he was complaining about something. What I heard was “acting” and the S word. Once he realized he was on camera he made an awkward face as if he knew he had been caught.

Anyone else catch this?

Guv says Bloomberg would be ‘excellent candidate’

(06-19) 15:31 PDT Los Angeles — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday that he would welcome New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — who has hinted he may spend $1 billion to run as an independent candidate for the White House — into the 2008 contest because the mayor’s message is “all about fixing problems and creating a great vision for the future.’’

“I think he would make an excellent candidate,” said Schwarzenegger, speaking to reporters following his keynote address at a conference exploring the values of bipartisan politics sponsored by the Center on Communication Leadership at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School.

“I’ve never seen anyone that quick with the action. I mean, a problem comes: solve it. A problem comes, solve it,” Schwarzenegger said as he stood with Bloomberg at the Creative Artists Agency in Century City, where the two addressed an audience of about 200 politicians, academics, pundits and civic leaders.

The California governor’s comments about Bloomberg were made while the two starred at a symposium focused on “bridging the political divide” — a call to end partisan gridlock and increasingly nasty campaigns.

thereby guaranteeing democrat victory nest year. he’ll peel off conservatives, policy conservatives (vs religious if you get my drift). Either way, people are hungry for leadership and this election cycle marks rock bottom for leadership potential out of a group of candidates. The so very suck, all of them.
