BLITZER: The contest for the Republican presidential nomination is clearly far from over as GOP voters continue to look for alternatives. One of those hoping to break out of the pack is joining us today from San Diego. Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter of California is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, a former chairman of that panel. He wants to be president of the United States.
Thanks very much for coming in, Congressman.
HUNTER: Good to be with you, Wolf. Happy Father's Day.
BLITZER: Thank you. Happy Father's Day to you, as well. We'll talk about your son a little bit later. He's serving right now in Afghanistan.
But let's talk about immigration reform first. And I'm going to play a clip for you from what the president said this week. He'd desperately trying to get this legislation through the Senate, so then it will come to your chamber, the House of Representatives.
And he offered this idea. Listen to what the president said.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
BUSH: I support an amendment that will provide $4.4 million in immediate, additional funding for securing our borders and enforcing our laws at the work site. The funding will come from the fines and penalties that we collect from those who have come to our country illegally.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BLITZER: All right. What do you think about that idea. That $4.4 billion is a lot of money to beef up the border between the U.S. and Mexico, something you desperately want.
HUNTER: Well, you know, Wolf, I think it's terrible. I like the president. But I think it's a terrible trade for the president of the United States or the Senate, which really has this amendment, to trade border security for amnesty.

I would like to see a debate between Thompson and Hunter. Not that I want them to be enemies (I am hoping they are on the same side), but I would like to examine the differences between them.
Hunter is a man who says what he really believes. The rest of the top tier say what they think we want to hear.
Mr. Hunter needs to call a press conference every chance he can, and get his opposition to this illegal forgiveness bill, and point out where Jorge is wrong.. every chance he can get, We need Duncan for President...
Got video?
The president says this is good. You wouldn't disagree would you? Oh. You would.
Well, Sen. Cornyn says this is good. You wouldn't disagree would you? Oh. You would.
Well 63% of the people we polled think this is good. You wouldn't disagree would you? Oh. You would.
Say, how about we talk about the war ...
Geez' Wolfie... you sound stymied. Do you talk at all with Dobbs?
"And if you ask him today how much he's built, he's built precisely 13 miles of one layer of a double fence, meaning it's going to take him 40 years, at that rate, to build the border face.
"Mr. Chertoff is charged with securing the border. And the one thing he's not doing -- he's appearing on lots of talk shows. He is not securing the border."
Great DH interview PING
BTT!!
“”Mr. Chertoff is charged with securing the border. And the one thing he’s not doing — he’s appearing on lots of talk shows. He is not securing the border.” “
Youre going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship. Fred Thompson, 2006
I can’t see Duncan Hunter making that statement.
The difference is, Thompson sounds just like Bush.
You nailed it. Unfortunately for Wolfie, his game of gotchya crumbles when Hunter answers in no uncertain terms.
The differences are stark, but not as stark as between Hunter and the other “big three”
I'm not willing to go that far. I think one big difference between Thompson and Bush is that Thompson thinks in terms of premises and structure, which leaves good outcomes well rooted. Bush thinks in terms of outcome only, so he loses (gives away) a lot of important ground without even knowing he did it. If it works today then he is for it.
Still, Hunter is very very interesting to me and if Thompson (or Hunter for that matter) is weak somewhere, we need to know it before election day.
Yeah, it's called, "return to your country of origin and get at the end of the line."
Youre going to have to [give illegals] aspirations of citizenship F. Thompson, 2006
I don’t think Hunter would vote to OK allowing American firms to fire American employees to replace them with foreign workers.
It’s amazing how so many of the fredbots are willing to overlook his positions on illegal alien amnesty. There are only 2 candidates who are serious about securing the border, and only one of them has gotten any results. That man is Duncan Hunter.
