Wednesday, June 13, 2007 1:26 p.m. EDT Cancel Rush Limbaugh Or Lose Contract
The government in Broward County, Fla., is seeking to cut ties with a local radio station because it also broadcasts Rush Limbaughs show.
Station WIOD AM-610 has been the official channel for emergency information from the county government for the past year. But the County Commission, made up of all Democrats, refused to renew the relationship on Tuesday.
Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want the county to be linked to a station "thats out of step with area politics, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
She cited talk shows hosted by conservatives Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIODs partnership with Fox News.
"They have every right to speak, but we dont have to do business with them, she said.
But Ken Charles, WIODs director of AM programming, told the Sun-Sentinel: "Its a shame that people would let politics get in the way of saving lives in a hurricane.
The countys contract with the station was about to be rejected when commissioners decided to delay a final decision until next week.

this without a doubt raises a severe constitutional issue....throw the politicans who made this statement into prison...
(chuckle)
Yep, Liberals believe using the government to suppress free speech is their right.
Now THAT’s censorship.
I thought liberals liked “diversity”? No?
This is unbelievable that they would consider the programming of a radio station when giving the contract for emergency information. “out of step” with area politics???
who is out of step though? Compare the ratings for Rush, Sean, etc. with the newly re-created Air America. People try to marginalize Rush and others, but they speak for tens of millions of Americans.
I don’t believe that local governments are allowed to discriminate against vendors - well, they are allowed to discriminate in favor of vendors of a protected class, but I do not believe they can cite politics as a legitimate reason to refuse business.
They aren’t suppressing free speech, just penalizing the station’s listeners because the council doesn’t like the station.
The contract is to broadcast emergency info. One would assume they will just use another station.
no
You win the Free Republic Typo Twit of the Day award.
Fee speech is vey series and expensive!
I’m surpirsed is so hugh!
Your beeber just got stuned.
What most don’t realize is this station has the largest signal in the area. Which obviously means they can reach more people. As others have stated, politics has no place in this decision.
WIOD is the strongest station in the area. This station makes it’s money from Rush. Let these idiots cancel the contract and put the EBS on a 50 watt station.
“Station WIOD AM-610 has been the official channel for emergency information from the county government for the past year. “
I read on another thread that the station has been the official broadcaster of emergency reports since 1935.
Unlike the Imus “crisis”, this one sounds like it crosses the line.
