The three Republican presidential candidates who indicated last month that they do not believe in evolution may have been taking a safe stance on the issue when it comes to appealing to GOP voters.
A Gallup poll released Monday said that while the country is about evenly split over whether the theory of evolution is true, Republicans disbelieve it by more than 2-to-1.
Republicans saying they don't believe in evolution outnumbered those who do by 68 percent to 30 percent in the survey. Democrats believe in evolution by 57 percent to 40 percent, as do independents by a 61 percent to 37 percent margin.
The poll also said that those who go to church often are far likelier to reject evolution than those who do not. Republicans are likelier than Democrats or independents to attend church services, according to Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll.
At the GOP's first presidential debate last month, the 10 candidates were asked which of them did not believe in evolution. Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo raised their hands.
The Gallup survey, conducted May 21 to 24, involved telephone interviews with 1,007 adults. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Sad to see the republican party so out of touch on this.
OK..I’ll bite...I believe both theories can be true...who is to say that a day from the bible is one of our 24 hour days....just because you believe one can’t the other be plausible as well??? Donning flame resistant attire now!
One wonders why the elevation of this issue when there is no legislation pending.
Someone really wants the Republican party associated with creationism.

It would be interesting to see if the poll had any questions to see if those polled made any distinctions about “micro-evolution” v. “macro-evolution”.

the only folks I’ve ever seeen/heard/read making that distinction are creationists and IDers. Not trying to raise anyone’s ire, just calling it like I see it.

Evolution is a big subject. There's micro and there's macro. There's the question of evolution and intelligent design both working in tandem. There's the notion that evolution can be defined as mild genetic changes (more red-heads now then there were 50 years ago). So?
Asking someone "Do you believe in evolution?" is just not a good question.
So: Why is it asked?
Answer: Because it's one way to make Christians look bad and unelectable.

Doesn't matter. The object is to trash the Republican party, not find out what people really think.
There is a large plurality of people out there that believe creationists are just plain stupid. Whether evolution is true or not is irrelevant. Many people look down on those that don't accept evolution, and that's just a fact.
People may vote for someone that they have some kind of minor policy disagreement with, as long as most of their platform conforms to what the voter wants. But if a voter thinks someone is just plain stupid, then they won't vote for them, no matter what other issues they may agree on.
I've argued long and hard on FR on evolution subjects. The bottom line is that fighting evolution can do no good for either political ambitions, or with efforts to promote a particular faith. Science should be left to scientists. Politicians and faithful people can only be hurt when they confront science, and they should stay away from the subject for their own good.
(In my opinion, environmental issues don't qualify as "science". It's politics under the guise of science. Attack away)

You can count me in that number. The truth is that the vast majority of Americans believe that God created the heavens and the earth, but as with all the other issues like gay marriage, the death penalty and abortion, liberals just can’t accept that. If you want hardcore liberalism, move to Europe or Canada.
Whether the poll is correct or not, its being used to damage the Republican Party. And it will succeed.
