FONTAINEBLEAU, France --A gold-encrusted sword Napoleon wore into battle in Italy 200 years ago was sold Sunday for more than $6.4 million, an auction house said.

The last of Napoleon's swords in private hands, it has an estimated value of far less -- about $1.6 million, according to the Osenat auction house managing the sale.

Applause rang out in a packed auction hall across the street from one of Napoleon's imperial castles in Fontainebleau, a town southeast of Paris, when the sword was sold.

Osenat did not identify the buyer, but said the sword will remain in Napoleon's family, which had put it up for sale. The auction house did not immediately elaborate on the details.

Well, I believe that Napoleon, traced to its Romance roots, means “lion’s mane,” so linguistically you’d be justified in calling him “nappy” and it would have meaning also in the Imusian sense.

In the Biltmore house (Asheville, NC) there’s a gaming table on display that belonged to Napoleon while he was exiled to the island of Elba.

Napoleon was once heard to say,

"Able was I ere I saw this crappy little island."

I would love to have the sword of Godfrey de Bouillion, the first Crusader King of Jerusalem. His sword is kept at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Auction:

A place where everyone in the world who is interested in a particular item goes to bid on it. And the highest bidder gets the object in question.

Ergo, nobody in the world is willing to pay more than that amount.

So where is the “value”?

If you want to buy one today, you are going to have to come up with more than that.

"It has a "value" of $6.4 million. That's a fact. The free market says so."

I remember when $1.6 million was worth $1.6 million.

I know how you feel. And I'm the sub-contractor.

I certainly do appreciate the decent ones who do the job right the first time, on time, for the price they quoted. Our electrician is like that.
